This work aims to describe fishing activity in Guadeloupe through a typology. The samply unit y is the landing represented by a profile of specific composition. Using multivariate analysis methods allows to synthesize this fishing multi specises and multi fishing tackles. Principal Component Analysis and classification regroup landings. Then, segmentation method separateses classes by species composition. Typology is obtained by association of classes and tackles. The contraist between landings of reef fishes realized with traps and those which search for pelagics is clearly shown. Landings of queen conch and landings without fishes are separated in two classes. |

In the French West Indies islands, the transfer of chlordecone (kepone) from treated grounds towards the marine environment has been proved since the beginning of 2000s. In 2008, a maximal residue limit (MRL) was set at 20 µg / kg wet weight in fish and seafood, and therefore intensified the concern about the risks of high human exposure to the pesticide due to the consumption of contaminated marine products. To answer this concern, several sampling cruises were carried by public authorities and by Ifremer in order to analyze the contamination of the fish fauna around the Guadeloupe island. The data collected within these surveys improved our knowledge on the characteristics of the contamination of fish fauna and allowed to assess the distribution of this... |

Chlordecone is an organochlorine pesticide, used in the Lesser Antilles from 1972 to 1993 to fight against a banana weevil. That molecule is very persistent in the natural environment and ends up in the sea with runoff waters. From 2003 to 2013, seven campaigns of samplings have been conducted to evaluate the level of contamination of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. The present study is the first assessment and the first comparison of the concentrations of chlordecone between marine areas, taxonomic groups, and ecological factors like trophic groups or preferential habitat of fish species. The four most contaminated marine areas are located downstream the contaminated rivers and banana plantations. Crustaceans seemed to be more sensitive to the... |

Since 1983, the research on the optimal conception of FADs in Martinique was particularly focused on the improvement of their resistance to different maritime or human aggressions. Following several experimentations made with different types of fads, the choice was brought on light devices anchored in 1 500 to 2 000 m depths and an experimental approach was conducted to identify the causes of loss of fads and to attempt to modelize their hydrodynamic behaviour with relation to the sea conditions. Three mathematical models are used to simulate the fad behaviour under current action and swell, and to estimate the forces exerted on each part of the device. The results of this study are presented. The fad design used nowadays for the development of pelagic... |

In order to improve the sustainable development of FADs fishing, it is important to reduce the capture of juveniles or species that need a decrease in fishing effort, temporarily or definitively. Through previous statistics data coming from commercial fishing trips and new experimental fishing trips, we compared different gears and techniques selectivity for the species and the size of the capture around FADs. We also compared different type of bait used, the best hours to fish for better productivity and to target adults. Finally we look at the influence of the FAD distance from shore. We observed that fishers’ strategies have a critical influence on FADs setting and targeted species. The further the FAD is deployed and the better yield the fisherman... |

Product quality is an element of sustainable development for fisheries because it guarantees the safety and quality of landings, as well as optimal uptake. Where FADs fishing is concerned, open boats used for the capture of large pelagic fish are not big enough to be equipped with sufficient (regulatory) catch preservation equipment. In collaboration with boats at sea, this study has made it possible to monitor landings and fish flesh analysis and to review fishing practices and their subsequent impact on the quality of FADs fishing products. Several post-capture treatment protocols have been implemented by fishermen based on their professional knowledge, the size of the catch or the facilities at their disposal on the boats. Observations at sea have... |

Fishing with a beach seine for catching small pelagic fishes is a traditional activity in Martinique. Since the early eighties, an important decrease in the number of fishermen practising this activity has been recorded. In the context of high exploitation of reef resources, the beach seine presents a low selectivity, catching too many juveniles of demersal fish. The fads established in coastal areas, have been successfully used in others regions of the world for exploiting small pelagics. Thus, it could allow to favour a change of exploitation style of these resources in Martinique. In partnership, Ifremer, the Regional Council and the Fishing Committee have began an evaluation of the potentialities for this type of structures around the island. To... |

This summary tackles the development of fisheries in the Caribbean using fads. It highlights the principal causes which explain why, in spite of more than thirty years of experimenting, fishing on fads has not developed as much as had been hoped. Whereas the deep-sea production of pelagic fish by the continental countries of the region has considerably increased since the early eighties, that of the Lesser Antilles has grown more slowly. Anchored fads have given the boats of the small-scale fisheries from three islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique and Curacao) access to these pelagic resources. The various modes of development and management of the fads observed in each island are described. The first available data are used to provide some indications of the... |

In the West Indies, artisanal vessels target pelagic fish off the coast using several fishing gears in the same trip, which complicates their codification based on ICCAT references. This paper describes the fishing techniques used in Martinique in exploiting offshore pelagic species. A distinction is made between two métiers, fishing for large pelagic species on free schools or around driftwood and fishing close to anchored fish aggregating devices. These two métiers can be used in the same trip. Fishers can also suspend their use to catch small offshore pelagic species such as flying fish. Each gear enables a species group to be targeted. However, data collection carried out at landing sites does not allow assignment of catches to each of the gears used... |

Shared knowledge on fleets, gears-species and areas of operation, is essential to engage in a platform of exchange on low-impact offshore fishing techniques between fishers and stakeholders from different outermost regions. Information on small scale fisheries in Europe and especially in OR is often heterogeneous and dispersed. That is why it is fundamental to develop a systematic description – status and evolution - of small-scale fisheries in ORs to identify similarities and contrasts between the different ORs, especially in the perspective of fisheries management and more generally best practices. The general objective of the task 2.1.1 was to share knowledge about the status and evolution of small-scale fisheries in ORs according to a common... |
