In coastal systems, the multiplicity of sources fueling the pool of particulate organic matter (POM) leads to divergent estimations of POM composition. Eleven systems (two littoral systems, eight embayments and semi-enclosed systems and one estuary) distributed along the three maritime façades of France were studied for two to eight years in order to quantify the relative contribution of organic matter sources to the surface-water POM pool in coastal systems. This study was based on carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic ratios, used for running mixing models. The POM of the estuary is dominated by terrestrial material (93% on average), whereas the POM of the other systems is dominated by phytoplankton (84% on average). Nevertheless, for the latter... |

Large populations of the living benthic foraminifera Quinqueloculina carinatastriata (Wiesner, 1923) are reported for the first time from intertidal mudflats of the French Atlantic coast (Marennes-Oléron Bay and Ile de Ré). Maximum abundance of living specimens was recorded in early autumn. The species was previously described from the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian Seas (central Mediterranean Sea) and reported from the Eastern Mediterranean and Red Seas, as well as tropical and subtropical regions. A survey of available literature to trace records of the species in muddy shallow habitats along the western coasts of Europe and Africa reveals that the species is unrecorded from the Western Mediterranean Sea and is unknown in the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the... |

Marine fish farming is fairly recent in France and it is still in the process of being developed. On the Atlantic and Channel coasts, it deals mainly with Atlantic salmon (Salma salar), fario trout (Salmonella faria) with l,400 t in 1991, and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) with 600 t. In Gravelmes a bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and bream (Sparus auratus) farm (1,000 t) uses water which is heated (Mediterranean production for these two species is around 2,000 t). Although these figures are low compared to French shellfish farming (200,000 t) and foreign fish farms (150,000 t in Norway, for example), they are growing. |

Trace elements (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Se and Zn) were determined in liver and kidney of pilot whales Globicephala melas Traill, 1809 collected from 7 schools caught at different seasons around the Faroe Islands. These and other biological data at our disposal enabled us to confirm and to define more accurately the relations shown previously between age, sex and trace element concentrations in marine mammals. The most striking features were: (1) the elevated levels of Cd and Hg in pilot whales compared to other marine mammals and to minimum adverse-effect levels established for humans; (2) the biocumulative behaviour of Cd and Hg; (3) the high correlations between Hg and Se, predominantly influenced by age; and (4) the high correlations between Cd and Zn, the... |

Over the last thirty years, the French production of flat oyster Ostrea edulis dropped from15,000 tons/year to 1,500 tons. Marteilia refringens, a parasite of the flat oyster's digestive gland, is partly responsible for this drop. The fight against this pathogen agent requires a better knowledge of its parasitic cycle. The main hypothesis is the existence of a heteroxenous cycle, that is to say a cycle involving more than one host. However, for thirty years this or these hosts have not been found, and the cycle of Marteilia refringens remains unknown. |

Food web modelling is an ideal way to describe ecosystems, because it accounts for the totality of the relationships between its various components. One difficulty of such an approach, however, lies in the lack of data and information about some ecological relationships, resulting in under-defined systems. Inverse analysis can serve to complete steady-state food webs where the number of direct flow measurements is insufficient relative to the actual number of flows. We applied this method to the intertidal mudflat ecosystem of Brouage (eastern Marennes-Oleron Bay, SW France) and estimated the annual average carbon flows between the compartments of a coupled benthic and pelagic trophic food web from primary producers (microphytobenthos and phytoplankton) to... |

Laboratory microcosms were used to investigate the mud snail Hydrobia ulvac (Pennant) bioturbation activities and behavioural changes in response to snail density, algal food, sediment moisture content, light regime and water cover conditions. Density-dependent kinetics of bioturbated muddy areas were described by von Bertalanffy equations, which provided reliable estimates of mud surface covering rates by snail tracks (m(2) h(-1) snail(-1)), Snails need a wet habitat to be active either covered by seawater or by moving in fluid layers for low-tide conditions. Light and microphytobenthic biomass, which are less potent to affect snail activity, are positively interrelated to increase covering rates in the tested chl a concentrations within the range of 1 -... |

This study deals with the application of macrozoobenthos-based biotic indices (BI) within the frame of the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. More precisely, this study aimed at assessing the performance of five recently developed methodologies (BI) for the assessment of ecological quality status (EcoQ) in two semi-enclosed, sheltered coastal ecosystems and in one transitional water body situated along the Western French coast, namely Marennes-Oleron Bay, Arcachon Bay, and the Seine Estuary. This study showed that these five indices rarely agreed with each other, describing very different pictures of the overall EcoQ of the three study sites. This work also clearly underlined the limitations of these approaches, notably the... |

The invasive oriental shrimp Palaemon macrodactylus Rathbun, 1902 has considerably extended its distribution in transitional waters along the Atlantic and Channel coasts of France during the period 2007-2010. The most probable method of a primary introduction of this species is ballast waters, but passive transport by water currents is also a possible mechanism of colonization (secondary introductions). Palaemon macrodactylus is a powerful invader of transitional waters and these new populations should be monitored in the future to assess any consequences to native species. |

Inverse analysis was used to model the food webs of two intertidal mudflat ecosystems: Aiguillon Cove (AC) and Brouage Mudflat (BM) (south-western Atlantic coast, France). The aim of the present study is to describe and compare the functioning of these two ecosystems. The method of inverse analysis has been adapted in order to take into account, in a single calculation, two seasons: spring/summer (mid-March to mid-October) and autumn/winter (the rest of the year). Gathering all available data on the two sites, the most important gaps in knowledge were identified with the help of sensitivity analyses: they concerned mainly the exports of material by grazing fish (such as mullet Liza ramada), resuspension of microphytobenthos, and fluxes linked to microfauna... |

Previous studies have shown that the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae destabilizes the top layers of fine-grained sediments. This process is mediated by the formation of a "biogenic" fluff layer that includes tracks, faecal pellets and mucus. This fluff layer has been shown to be easily resuspended before general bed erosion. In order to examine how fluff layer and bed. erosion interact, flume experiments were performed with fluid sediments of varying water contents. Ten thousand snails were placed and allowed to crawl for 5 h on the sediment surface, and then the resuspended sediment mass was measured in response to step-wise shear stress increases. Two distinct erosion phases were observed: (1) initial resuspension of the fluff layer and (2) the subsequent bed... |

Laboratory experiments performed in a recirculating flume were designed to quantify the bioturbation influence of the mud snail Hydrobia ulvae, one of the most abundant deposit feeders on European intertidal mudflats. Variations in sediment moisture content that occur between bedforms in shore-normal, ridge and runnel systems of intertidal mudflats were added to the model definition. Sediment erosion thresholds, erosion rates and the microalgal pigment composition of resuspended material were quantified for different H. ulvae densities (0, 1000, 5000, 10 000 and 50 000 snails m(-2)) and applied bed shear stresses. Two different sediment moisture contents were tested. In the absence of macrofauna, recorded turbidities increased up to the maximum applied... |
