Germination of Jacaranda mimosifolia (D. Don - Bignoniaceae) seeds: effects of light, temperature and water stress BABT
Socolowski,Fábio; Takaki,Massanori.
Investigations were carried out to study the effect of light, temperature and water stress on the germination of seeds of Jacaranda mimosifolia which showed the minimum and maximum germination temperature at 15 and 40º C, respectively. The optimum temperature was 25º C with high percentage and germination rate. Slight promotive effect of white light was observed. Under water stress conditions the effect of light was high but at optimum temperature no effect of light was observed. At -0.9MPa few seeds germinated.

Pelletization of seeds of Raphanus sativus L. cv. Redondo Gigante with graphite for germination under water stress conditions BABT
Freitas,Nobel Penteado; Takaki,Massanori.
The effect of water stress on germination of radish seeds is dependent on the presence of light. The effect of pelletization of radish seeds with powdered graphite on the tolerance to water stress under light was analysed. White light and far-red lights were filtered by graphite increasing slightly the tolerance of pelleted seeds to water stress of -0.77MPa. Although red light also inhibited seed germination the graphite had no effect. We propose the pelletization of seeds of Raphanus sativus, at least in cv redondo gigante with graphite as a pratice before planting to increase the tolerance to water stress.

Morphological and physiological responses of Cedrela Fissilis Vellozo (Meliaceae) seedlings to light BABT
Santos,Débora Leonardo dos; Rakocevic,Miroslava; Takaki,Massanori; Ribaski,Jorge.
Seeds of Cedrela fissilis Vellozo were planted and maintained under two distinct conditions: at east border of a forest with red: far-red ratio of 1.15 and under canopy with photosynthetic photon flux density of 0.22-7% of full sun radiation and red: far-red ratio of 0.21-0.36. Seedling growth (height and stem diameter) was faster under sun, the development of roots more continuous and the number of leaves almost twice of that of shade plants. The leaf area was 10 times greater in sun plants with 15-25 leaflets per leaf while under shade only 5 to 10 leaflets were found per leaf. In shade plants, a higher proportion of dry mass was found in aerial parts. Leaves of sun plants had the capacity of gas exchange to respond to high light radiation, but leaves...

Interaction of temperature and light on seed germination in Tecoma stans L. Juss. ex Kunth (Bignoniaceae) BABT
Socolowski,Fábio; Vieira,Daniela Cristine Mascia; Takaki,Massanori.
The effects of the temperature and light on the control of seeds germination in Tecoma stans was studied in the present work. The influence of constant temperatures from 10 to 45ºC, with 5ºC intervals, under the white light and darkness were tested. The optimum temperature for the germination of the seeds was between 25 and 30ºC, for both the light and the dark treatments. The maximal germination was reached in the range of 15 to 35ºC under the light and of 20 to 40ºC in the darkness. The seeds showed highest synchronization of the germination near the optimal temperature. The germination in the field was tested under the two light conditions. The highest percent of germination occurred under the direct sunlight (86.1%) than under the canopy (69%)....

Seed germination in Miconia theaezans (Bonpl.) Cogniaux (Melastomataceae) BABT
Godoi,Simone; Takaki,Massanori.
The effects of light and temperature were studied on the seeds of Miconia theazeans by isothermic and alternating temperature incubations. The optimum temperature for seed germination was determined by final percentage and germination rates as located in the range of 27.5 to 30 °C and by germination kinetics at the range of 19.5 to 30 °C. The germination was dependent on diffusion processes. The minimum and maximum temperatures were 12.5-15°C and 32.5-35°C, respectively. The seeds showed strong light dependence for germination with the necessity of daily 4-6 h white light irradiation for the maximum induction of germination. However, under 30-20 °C alternating temperatures, daily 2 hours white light was enough to induce germination and attained maximum...

Temperature Dependent Seed Germination of Dalbergia nigra Allem (Leguminosae) BABT
Ferraz-Grande,Fernanda G. A.; Takaki,Massanori.
The germination of endangered species Dalbergia nigra was studied and 30.5° C was found as optimum temperature, although the species presented a broad temperature range where germination occurs and light had no effect. The analysis of kinetics of seed germination confirmed the asynchronized germination below and above the optimum temperature. The light insensitive seed and germination also at high temperatures indicated that D. nigra could occur both in understories and gaps where the mean temperature was high.
