Thürig, Barbara; Slaughter, Ana; Marouf, Elaheh; Mauch-Mani, Brigitte; Tamm, Lucius.
The influence of site on resistance of grapevine (cv. Chasselas) to Plasmopara viticola was evaluated. Grapevine leaves from three vineyards in the region of Lake Neuchâtel (Switzerland) were tested for their susceptibility to P. viticola in the lab in five successive years (2004-2008), and the expression levels of four selected defense-related genes (Glucanase, Lipoxygenase 9, 9-cis epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase, Stilbene synthase) were studied in one year. In all five years of examination, differences between sites were substantial, with plants from site HAU being much less susceptible to P. viticola than plants from site AUV. Susceptibility of plants from a third site varied from year to year. Differences in susceptibility were mirrored in the...

FiBL-Forschung zur Bekämpfung der Apfelkrankheiten Schorf und Regenflecken Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques; Tamm, Lucius.

Fuchs, Jacques; Amsler, Thomas; Jimenez, Sonia; Tamm, Lucius.

Contributions of EU-project REPCO to apple scab control Organic Eprints
Köhl, Jürgen; Heijne, Bart; Hockenhull, John; Lindhard Pedersen, Hanne; Trapmann, Marc; Eiben, Ute; Tamm, Lucius.
The objective of REPCO is to contribute to the replacement of copper fungicides in organic agriculture by new measures for control of downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) in grapevine and scab (Venturia inaequalis) in apple. Both major European organic crops strongly depend on copper fungicides. Permitted amounts will be reduced stepwise during the following years (Council Regulation (EEC) 2092/91, Annex II) to avoid environmental risks. In European countries where copper fungicides are already out of use, production of organic apples suffers severe economical problems because of insufficient scab control. Potentiators of resistance, organically based fungicides and biocontrol agents are screened and evaluated in apple. Effects of crop management practices...

Regulation According to EU Directive 91/414: Data Requirements and Procedure Compared with Regulation Practice in Other OECD Countries Organic Eprints
Hauschild, Rüdiger; Speiser, Bernhard; Tamm, Lucius.
The data requirements and the administrative procedure needed for the registration of biological plant protection products and their active ingredients (micro-organisms including viruses, plant extracts, and semiochemicals) are described for the European Union, the USA, Canada und Australia and compared between these systems. Experiences from registration procedures are compared. While data requirements and formalities are rather similar in all systems considered, the time span needed for evaluation and the possibility to predict this time span are quite different. Alternative regulatory measures existing in different regulatory systems are described and initiatives for the facilitation are presented.

Policy brief on the organic approach to inputs – Plant protection products, fertilisers, veterinary drugs and feed additives explained Organic Eprints
Lang, Isabella; Tamm, Lucius; Speiser, Bernhard; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Herforth-Rahmé, Joelle; Walkenhorst, Michael; Bünemann-König, Else; Maurer, Veronika; Moeskops, Bram; Busacca, Emanuele; Gall, Eric; Magid, Jakob; Schmitt, Annegret.
The plant and animal health care strategy in organic farming strengthensagro-biodiversity, protects the environment as well as animal and human health. In addition to fully exploiting preventive options, the use of external inputs such as plant protection products, fertilisers or veterinarymedicinal productsis allowed to prevent inacceptable losses in productivity or animal suffering. However, external inputs need to comply with organic standardsas well as European legislationand aretherefore carefully evaluated before any decision on acceptance is taken.Organic farming systems should aim at reducing dependency on off-farm fertilisers to the lowest feasable level to ensure closed nutrient cycles and avoid nutrient leakage and contamination. This policy...

Efficacy of a Juncus effusus extract on grapevine and apple plants against Plasmopara viticola and Venturia inaequalis, and identification of the major active constituent Organic Eprints
Thuerig, Barbara; Ramseyer, Justine; Hamburger, Matthias; Oberhänsli, Thomas; Potterat, Olivier; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Tamm, Lucius.
BACKGROUNd There is growing demand to replace chemical pesticides with alternatives owing to concerns related to impacts on human health and the environment. Plant-derived plant protection products could provide sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives to chemical products. The aim of this study was to identify plant and fungal extracts with so far unknown activity against important plant pathogens by in vitro screening of a library of more than 3000 extracts. RESULTS Several plant extracts with promising in vitro fungicidal activity (MIC100 ≤ 50 µg mL−1) towards one or several of the investigated pathogens (Venturia ineaqualis, Phytophthora infestans, Plasmopara viticola) were identified by the screening. One of the hits, an ethyl acetate...

Kupfereinsatz von Schweizer Biobauern in verschiedenen Kulturen Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Mieves, Esther; Tamm, Lucius.

Could phosphite be a new fungicide for organic farming? Organic Eprints
Speiser, Bernhard; Tamm, Lucius.
Quote from the article "Potassium phosphite, also called «phosphonate», is a salt of phosphonic acid with the formula K2HPO3. It should not be confounded with phosphates, nor with the organophosphorous insecticides which are also called «phosphonates». Potassium phosphite can be used as a fungicide against oomycetes in various crops. In the early 1990ies, it was extensively tested on organically grown grapevines in Switzerland. It was effective against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola), and blocked the disease up to 3 days after infection. Phosphite was mobile and very persistent in plants and could be detected in grapes harvested one year after the last application. Analyses of 53 wine samples reveiled that the treatment inevitably leads to...

Are there alternatives to copper for controlling grapevine downy mildew in organic viticulture? Organic Eprints
Dagostin, Silvia; Schärer, Hans-Jakob; Pertot, Ilaria; Tamm, Lucius.
Downy mildew caused by the obligate biotrophic oomycete Plasmopara viticola is one of the most important and devastating diseases of grapevine. Copper-based fungicides are used to control the disease in organic vineyards. However, since 2006, copper use has been limited by an European Commission regulation. In this study conducted from 2004 to 2007, we tested materials that might replace copper in organic viticulture, under controlled greenhouse and field conditions at two locations in Europe (northern Italy and Switzerland). We tested 112 different treatments, including biocontrol agents, materials of animal origin, homeopathic preparations, inorganic materials, microbial extracts, natural derivatives, plant extracts, physical methods and synthetic...
