Animal health and nutrition in organic farming Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Weisbjerg, Martin Riis; Kristensen, Troels; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; White, Andrew; Roderick, Stephen; Lockeretz, Willie.
Animals are important in organic farming systems, both as a part of the concept and in practice, where there is great weight on forming an integrated system with harmony between the land, the animals and the people, involving local recirculation of feed and manure. Good animal health and welfare is an important goal for organic husbandry. In contrast to crops, animals are not just parts of the farming system, they are also sentient creatures and as such they deserve special moral consideration. They are individuals that need to be cared for, they can suffer, and they can interact with each other and with the humans and environment around them. Animal management is, therefore, very different from crop management. Humans have a moral obligation to treat...

Future European market for organic products from ruminants Organic Eprints
Kristensen, Erik Steen; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
The market for organic food is increasing in most Europe countries and it is expected to increase in the future. The present market share of organic food in European countries is however quite low (0-4%). The market shares are very different between countries. The highest market shares (3-4%) appear in Austria, Switzerland and Denmark. Market shares below 1% are seen in many other European countries. The market shares are also very different from product to product. Drinking milk/milk for consumption shows some of the highest market shares. Market shares for meat from ruminants and processed milk (i.e. cheese) are often considerable lower than for drinking milk/milking for consumption. The main barriers for increased organic sales can be identified...

Transmission dynamics of Ascaris suum in Danish organic pig farms Organic Eprints
Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Dalsgaard, Anders; Mejer, Helena.
Although Ascaris suum is the most common nematode in pig farms, the on-farm transmission dynamics is not well described. Hence we performed a 1-year field study on organic pig farms, mapping egg contamination levels in pens and on pastures (dry sows, lactating sows and starters) and infection levels in animals. In conclusion, recovery of infective eggs was limited in deep litter compared to shallow litter, but many deep litter eggs were still viable. A. suum transmission takes place both indoors and outdoors. Highly infective bedding material should be stored, composted or treated before spreading on crops and never used for pastures.

Parasitter i udegående grise Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
Indvoldsorm forekommer hyppigere hos økologiske grise end konventionelle grise, da økologiske produktionssystemer typisk fremmer overlevelsen af ormenes smittestadier (æg) i dyrenes omgivelser.

The effect of Cichorium intybus on helminth infections in pigs Organic Eprints
Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Lydehøj Hansen, Laurits; Bach Knudsen, Knud Erik.
Two similar trials were carried out to examine how dietary inclusion of an easily fermentable carbohydrate source such as chicory roots (Cichorium intybus) may effect established and establishing helminth infections in pigs. In the first trial varying feeding periods with crude chicory roots naturally rich in fructans (primarily inulin) were tested whereas crude chicory roots were compared with dried chicory roots and purified inulin in the second trial. In both trials pigs were infected with 3000 O. dentatum L3-larvae while fed a traditional standard diet. When the infections were well established and patent, experimental diets were introduced and the faecal egg counts monitored. Two weeks before the pigs were slaughtered all animals were infected with...

PREVALENCE OF THE PROTOZOAN PARASITE CRYPTOSPORIDIUM IN THREE ORGANIC PIG FARMS IN DENMARK Organic Eprints
Petersen, Heidi Huus; Mejer, Helena; Jianmin, Wang; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Dalsgaard, Anders; Olsen, Annette; Enemark, Heidi L..
Pigs are potential sources of contamination with Cryptosporidium spp., which can lead to infection in humans. Cryptosporidiosis in humans is primarily caused by two species, C. hominis and the zoonotic C. parvum, however, other species including C. suis and C. scrofarum are able to cause zoonotic infection. The oocysts can survive for long periods in the environment and are able to resist most disinfectants. In order to estimate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in organic pigs and to improve knowledge of the epidemiology, the oocyst excretion was monitored at quarterly intervals during the period September 2011 to June 2012 in each of three organic, Danish pig farms. Faecal samples for examination of Cryptosporidium spp. were collected from 994 pigs...

The effect of a diet with fructan-rich chicory roots on intestinal helminths and microbiota with special focus on Bifidobacteria and Campylobacter in piglets around weaning Organic Eprints
Jensen, Annette Nygaard; Mejer, Helena; Mølbak, Lars; Langkjær, Maria; Jensen, Tim Kaare; Angen, Øystein; Martinussen, Torben; Klitgaard, Kirstine; Baggesen, Dorte Lau; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Roepstorff, Allan.
The restrictions on the use of antibiotic and anthelmintic treatments in organic pig farming necessitate alternative non-medical control strategies. Therefore, the antibiotic and parasite-reducing effect of a fructan-rich (prebiotic) diet of dried chicory was investigated in free-ranging piglets. Approximately half of 67 piglets from 9 litters were experimentally infected with Ascaris suum and Trichuris suis in the suckling period (1 to 7 weeks of age) and 58 of the piglets were challenged daily with E. coli O138:F8 for 9 days after weaning to induce weaning diarrhoea. The litters were fed either chicory (30% DM) or a control diet. The effect of chicory on intestinal helminths, intestinal microbiota, especially Bifidobacteria and Campylobacter spp., and E....

Helminth parasites in pigs: challenges and current research highlights Organic Eprints
Roepstorff, Allan; Mejer, Helena; Nejsum, Peter; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
Helminths in pigs have generally received little attention from veterinary parasitologists, despite Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, and Oesophagostomum sp. being common worldwide. The present paper presents challenges and current research highlights connected with these parasites. In Danish swine herds, new indoor production systems may favour helminth transmission and growing knowledge on pasture survival and infectivity of A. suum and T. suis eggs indicates that they may constitute a serious threat to outdoor pig production. Furthermore, it is now evident that A. suum is zoonotic and the same may be true for T. suis. With these ‘new’ challenges and the economic impact of the infections, further research is warranted. Better understanding of...

Effects of including chicory in perennial ryegrass-white clover leys on production and health in organic lambs Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Bea; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Hansen, Hanne; Ranvig, Hans; Høgh-Jensen, Henning.
Two trials were conducted to examine the effect of chicory included in or as additional plots of the ryegrass–white clover pastures on growth, naturally acquired nematode infections and selectivity of chicory by lambs. In Experiment 1, 31 weaned Texel lambs (36±7 kg) grazed either ryegrass–white clover (CTRL) or ryegrass–white clover–hicory pastures (CHIC). In Experiment 2, 30 weaned Shropshire lambs (32±7 kg) grazed either ryegrass–white clover (CTRL) or ryegrass–white clover with access to small additional chicory plots, which corresponded to 3% (CHIC-LO) or 6% of the total grazing area (CHIC-HI). No consistent differences in live weight gain and nematode faecal egg counts were observed in lambs grazing the different pasture types. Sward height on the...

Farm-level risk factors for Fasciola hepatica infection in Danish dairy cattle Organic Eprints
Takeuchi-Storm, Nao; Denwood, Matt; Hansen, Tina; Halasa, Tariq; Rattenborg, Erik; Boes, Jaap; Enemark, Heidi Larsen; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
Recent studies suggest that liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infections in cattle have increased in Denmark in recent years. This study aimed to identify potential farm level risk factors for liver fluke infection in Danish dairy farms using two different diagnostic methods. Based on liver condemnation data of all individual cattle slaughtered in Denmark, 145 and 77 farms were selected as cases and matched controls. The selection criteria were; 1) minimum 50 animals were slaughtered in 2013, 2) minimum three cases of liver condemnation due to liver flukes in 2013 (case) / no history of liver condemnation due to liver flukes for the last three years (control), and 3) control farms were located within 10 km from the case farms. Bulk tank milk (BTM) samples...

Productivity and quality, competition and facilitation of chicory in ryegrass/legume-based pastures under various nitrogen supply levels Organic Eprints
Høgh-Jensen, Henning; Nielsen, Bea; Thamsborg, Stig Milan.
Traditional perennial ryegrass-white clover mixtures have limitations in combined productivity and quality that herbs like chicory may alleviate. This study examined the consequences on productivity and quality of as well as competition and facilitation after introducing chicory into varies ryegrass-legume-based pastures in a field study over 3 consecutive growing seasons. A cultivar of chicory, suitable for grazing, in pure stand was found to out-yield a pure stand ryegrass in terms of dry matter and nitrogen (N) accumulation but was found to yield similar to mixture of chicory and ryegrass. The inclusion of chicory, increased N accumulation per area unit irrespective of associated leguminous species but had no effect (P>0.05) on the combined dry...

Organic dairy farmers decision making in the first 2 years after conversion in relation to mastitis treatment Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Bennedsgaard, Torben Werner; Houe, Hans; Enevoldsen, Carsten; Aarestrup, Frank Møller; Snoo, Arno de.
In organic dairy farming, a goal about improved animal welfare and avoidance of the use of chemicals has introduced restrictions in the use of antimicrobials for treatment of infectious diseases. Mastitis is the major cause of antimicrobial treatments in Danish dairy farming. In order to improve and minimise the use of antimicrobials and the risk of antimicrobial resistance in organic farming, a study based on qualitative research interviews with newly converted organic farmers was carried out. Twenty farmers,18–26 months after conversion, were interviewed focusing on mastitis treatment patterns and the farmers’ own perception of possible changes in strategies, choices and daily routines linked to mastitishandling. Antimicrobial treatment was the dominant...
