During high moisture paddy threshing, the separation losses are generally large. However, while attempting to increase cropping intensity, it is often necessary to handle the moist paddy for threshing. Furthermore, in absence of adequate sunshine hours in wet season, crop can’t be dried to a desired moisture level before threshing. Keeping these requirements in mind, a co-axial split-rotor thresher was designed for threshing high moisture paddy. This paper describes design and testing of a stationary thresher with an unequal speed co-axial split-rotor for rice in Thailand. First rotor serves mainly the threshing operation, whereas, rotating at relatively higher speed, the second rotor does mainly the separation of rice grains from husk. Faster rotation of... |

The study was designed to re-examine and modify the Blaney-Morin-Nigeria (BMN) evapotranspiration (ET) model which was developed for Asaba and Uyo in South-south of Nigeria. This was achieved using a non-linear iterative technique based on Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, making use of climatic variables. The newly developed model constants were H = 288.0, m = 0.96; H = 285.8, m = 0.91 and H = 287.0, m = 1.00 for South-south Nigeria, Asaba and Uyo respectively compared to the H = 520.0, m = 1.31 for the original BMN ET model. Data were analysed using different statistical models. The three newly developed BMN models when compared with FAO-56 PM model which was used as standard gave a more satisfactory RET estimates than the original BMN ET model when... |

Time periods of walking-grazing, standing and lyingof cattle’s life can be used to predict their health. However, famer cannot observe those in all the time. Therefore, this paper proposes a simple technique to classify the cattle behaviors by using the magnitude and the variance of accelerometer output signal. There are two steps of algorithm detection, the first step employed the magnitude of each axis for classifying the cattle behaviors into two groups: 1) walking-grazing and standing and 2) lying. After that, the second step used the variance of Y-axis to notify between walking-grazing and standing behaviors. The classification results were inform time periods of each behavior and tested with two cattle. The measured precise times of each behavior... |

Automatic Milking Systems (AMS) measure and record specific data about milk production and cow behaviour, providing farmers with useful real-time information for each animal. At the same time, indoor climatic conditions in terms of temperature and humidity within a dairy livestock barn represent a well-known crucial issue in farm building design and management, since these parameters can remarkably influence cows behaviour, milk yield and animal welfare. The goal of the study is to develop and test an innovative procedure for the comprehensive analysis of AMS-generated multi-variable time-series, with a focus on the analysis of the relationship between milk production and indoor climatic conditions. The specific purpose of the study is to develop and test a... |

Milking is a key operation on dairy farms. The capacity and function of milking parlor influences production conditions (time of operations, needs of labor, total costs), so actually it affects the efficiency of the whole dairy farm. This paper presents a structure and principal parts of mathematical model which was created with the aim to enable to farmers and designers to choose suitable type of milking parlor for specific farm conditions. Three principal questions important for optimization of milking parlor are: technical parameters, indicators of labor productivity and economic criteria. The model structure was created with the aim to find the answer to all of them. The model includes in calculation main parameters of typical arrangements of milking... |

The aim of the study is to determine the effect of ground insulation and feedstock on performance of fixed dome biogas digester. To achieve this, six identical fixed dome biogas digesters with volume of 32 liters were designed, constructed and used to carryout anaerobic digestion of three feedstocks namely cow abdominal waste, poultry droppings and 1:1 mixture of cow abdominal waste and poultry droppings. Three digesters were buried underground for insulation while the remaining three kept on the surface uninsulated. The ANOVA result showed that there were significant differences in the slurry temperature, volume of biogas produced and slurry pH respectively at 5% significant levels. The range of pH, Volume of biogas and slurry temperature (ST) in all the... |

The main objectives of work are to experiments and measurements for the optical, electrical, physical and chemical properties of strawberry fruits. Strawberry were classified into three grades according to The varieties of strawberry (Festival ,Fortona and Red Marline Strawberry). The strawberry fruits were exposure by visible laser to determine optical and electrical signal reflections of strawberry. The samples were classified into six kinds of defects of strawberry according to codex specification of strawberry. It was found that the high value of physical properties was Fortona variety while the low value is Festival variety, but the physical properties of Red Marlin variety intermediate between value of fortona and festival varietyIt was found that... |

Hawthorn, from Rosaceae family, is one of the important forest fruits which there are different species in Iran. In this study, some characteristics of hawthorn fruit (Crataegus pontica), including physical properties (fruit length, width, thickness, geometric, arithmetic and equivalent mean diameter, surface area, sphericity, aspect ratio, thousand fruit mass and true density) and nutritional properties (total dry matter, total soluble solid, titratable acidity and moisture content) were considered. Results showed that average of fruit length, width and thickness were 1.53 mm, 1.95 mm and 1.78 mm, respectively. The geometric mean diameter was same to arithmetic mean diameter (1.75 mm), while equivalent mean diameter was higher than both (1.76 mm). Some... |

Tunnel dryer is a combination of two or more cabinet dryers arranged in a serial order in a tunnel. It has found application in drying of both food and non-food origin but its scale up process has hitherto been based on experimentation and experience without comprehensive scientific background which often leads to the poor performance of those dryers. In this study, theoretical modelling for tunnel drying which could effectively predict the dryer’s performance was developed. The modeling process involved the segmentation of drying parameters into an equipment and material models. Equipment model entails the parameters supplied by the dryer such as air temperature, velocity, humidity profiles and heat transfer to the samples being dried (cassava chips).... |

Site-specific detection of a soil hardpan is an important step in precision farming. Different methods have been developed including the ASABE standard soil cone penetrometer to detect presence of hardpan layers. Most of the newly developed methods use results obtained by a soil cone penetrometer as a reference to validate their potential. Soil factors, mainly soil moisture and bulk density, may influence the cone index measurement and the prediction of the relative strength and depth of the hardpan layer. The effects of soil drying on hardpan characterizing attributes of peak cone index, depth to the peak cone index and depth to the top of the hardpan layer were studied for three compaction levels on a Norfolk sandy loam soil in a soil bin. The soil in... |

Mechanical impact on fresh agriculture commodities may be a criterial issue during mechanical processes such as grading, sorting, conveying, packing or transport. The applications of electronic measuring devices in form of artificial fruits like ‘Instrumented Spheres’ (IS) are an aid to quantify influences of mechanical impact on the value of fruit, vegetable and potato. Additionally, modelling and simulation of impact on fruits helps to identify those influencing parameters. In this study, modelling and simulation runs were performed based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). For dropping tests an ‘Acceleration Measuring Unit’ (AMU) was used which can be implemented into real or artificial fruits to measure the accelerations upon impact. The test stand was... |
