Consumer preferences and willingness to pay for organic apples Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Cerda,Arcadio A; García,Leidy Y; Ortega-Farías,Samuel; Ubilla,Álvaro M.
This study provides marketing data regarding consumer preferences and willingness to pay for organic agricultural products in Chile. The main objectives of this study were to assess consumer willingness to pay for organic apples and to determine the main attributes that consumers look for when purchasing apples. The methodology applied to reach the first objective was the contingent valuation method using a logistic probability function and a single-bound dichotomous choice format. Additionally, this study estimates the marginal willingness to pay (WTP) of consumers for organic apples by using conjoint analysis with ranking procedures. This study was performed in the city of Talca, Chile, where a total of 400 individuals from a probability sampling were...

Variation over time in the prevalences of three viruses of the grapevine leafroll complex in a commercial vineyard in south-central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mujica,María Valentina; Mora,Roxana; Rosales,Marlene; Sandoval,Claudio.
A vineyard in south-central Chile was surveyed during five growing seasons to analyze the increase over time in the number of plants infected with Grapevine leafroll-associated virus-1, -2 and -3. At the end of the study, GLRaV-3 was found to be the most prevalent virus, with 46% of plants infected by this pathogen. GLRaV-2 infected 13% of plants, and GLRaV-1 infected 12%. Considering all three viruses together, the prevalence of infection increased exponentially from 14% of the plants at the beginning of the study period to 68% at the end. The patterns of the spread of GLRaV-2 and GLRaV-3 were mostly along the rows, whereas the pattern of spread for GLRaV-1 could not be determined.

Current and potential distribution areas for Nothofagus alessandrii, an endangeredtree species from central Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Santelices,Rómulo; Drake,Fernando; Mena,Carlos; Ordenes,Rodrigo; Navarro-Cerrillo,Rafael M.
Nothofagus alessandrii ("ruil") is an endangered species native to the Maule Coastal Forest of central Chile. Previous studies have demonstrated that the current distribution of this species and rates of deforestation and fragmentation present a serious threat to the species. To address this threat, spatial and temporal variation in remnant "ruil" forest cover was analyzed for the period from 1991 to 2008. Using aerial photography and geomatic tools, the state of "ruil" forests cover in 1991 was compared to the "ruil" forests cover in 2008 and with this information, the potential distribution area of this species was calculated. The results demonstrate that the current area of "ruil" forest is approximately 314 ha, with a net loss of 42 ha (12% of the...

Ayala,Marlene; Bañados,Pilar; Thielemann,Mariana; Toro,Román.
In sweet cherries, accumulated nitrogen (N) stores from the previous fall support early spring growth. To complement the N supply in the soil, Chilean growers use foliar urea applications after harvest. Information on the effectiveness of foliar N applications in sweet cherry is lacking. To study the canopy distribution of N applied as urea foliar sprays, an experiment using a "Bing"/"Gisela®6" ("GI®6") sweet cherry orchard was carried out in 2009/2010 in Chile (35° 09' 53'' S, 71° 20' 43'' W). The objective was to investigate N distribution and recycling in 3-year-old fruiting branches. A total of 120 branches (one per tree) were labeled using 15N-urea. 15N-urea was applied to the whole branch on four separate dates or treatments (TR) after fruit harvest:...

Development of insulin resistance in horses (Equus caballus): etiologic and molecular aspects Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gandarillas,Monica; Matus,José Tomás; Márquez-Hernández,Roberto I; Vargas-Bello-Pérez,Einar.
In horses, insulin resistance is associated with several comorbidities such as obesity, laminitis, colic and osteochondrosis. The multifactorial causes of insulin resistance in horses have been addressed, which include genetic and environmental factors. As a consequence of these factors, the cellular signaling pathways responsible for insulin synthesis, the glucose intake in target cells of peripheral tissues and other related processes (e.g., adipocytokine signaling pathways) are affected. In response to insulin, changes in gene expression occur, which are required for the integration of an entire network of metabolic and physiological responses in different organs. The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) were the particular focus of...
