Prediction of colonization by macrophytes in the Yaciretá reservoir of the Paraná River (Argentina and Paraguay) BJB
NEIFF,J. J.; POI DE NEIFF,A. S. G.; PATIÑO,C. A. E.; BASTERRA DE CHIOZZI,I..
The potential colonization by anchored plants (PCAP) and the potential areas for initial colonization of free floating plants were estimated during the early filling phase for the Yaciretá reservoir. In order to obtain the PCAP, the observed maximum depth of colonization of the anchored macrophytes before impoundment and the hypsographic curves were used. The species inhabiting the pre-impoundment area were classified according to the different bioforms before the inclussion in the analysis. The areal extent of PCAP (from depths between 0-4 m) could reach 275 km² at 76 m above sea level (current water level), whereas at 82 m above sea level (final filling level) the littoral zone will be increased by about 21.5%. The potential area for geophytes was...

Biology of Corecoris dentiventris Berg, 1884 (Hemiptera, Coreidae) in tobacco culture (Nicotiana tabacum) BJB
CALDAS,B.-H. C.; REDAELLI,L. R.; DIEFENBACH,L. M. G..
Corecoris dentiventris Berg, 1884 (HEM., Coreidae) represents a pest in the tobacco culture in Southern Brazil. Nymphs and adults cause the wilting and twisting of the tobacco leaves due to their sucking habit. There are very few works about this species and these are restricted to concise description of the adult morphology, records of host plants and enumeration of injuries. The present investigation aims to study the life cycle of this bug. The experiment was carried out in a tobacco culture (Virginia type, var. K 326) implanted in the experimental area of the Departamento de Fitossanidade of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, RS. The life cycle was studied in field conditions, in nylon cages, from egg clusters oviposited by...

Reproductive behavior and seasonal occurrence of Psecas viridipurpureus (Salticidae, Araneae) BJB
ROSSA-FERES,D. de C.; ROMERO,G. Q.; GONÇALVES-DE- FREITAS,E.; FERES,R. J. F..
The reproductive behavior and the seasonal occurrence of Psecas viridipurpureus were studied at the Estação Ecológica do Noroeste Paulista, a small conservation area in the northwest region of São Paulo State, Brazil (49°22'50''W and 20°48'36''S). P. viridipurpureus occurred on "gravatá", a bromeliaceous plant (Bromelia balansae, Bromeliaceae) which does not accumulate rain water. During the courtship display the couple occupied the median region of the "gravatá" leaves, with the male always located in a higher position than the female. The males of P. viridipurpureus showed a complex courtship behavior, which included five motor patterns. The courtship and mating behavior occurred preponderantly during the rainy season and the juvenile recruitment between...

Reprodutive ecology of the blue crab, Callinectes danae Smith, 1869 in the Conceição Lagoon system, Santa Catarina Isle, Brazil BJB
BRANCO,J. O.; MASUNARI,S..
Abundance of ovigerous females, size of the first gonadal maturation and the possible migration, route of the blue crab Callinectes danae from the Conceição Lagoon system, Santa Catarina Isle, Brazil, are described. This lagoon is connected with the coastal area through a canal. A total of 1,124 crabs was caught during a 19 month sampling period. The reproduction and recruitment of juveniles occurred all year-round, with two peaks of abundance (February and September), correlated with the presence of ovigerous females (June and January). The mean carapace width at which the crabs attained gonadal maturity for the first time was 9.4 cm in males and 8.4 cm in females. The Conceição Lagoon is a growth, reproduction, and spawning area for the species. However,...

Feeding biology of a guild of benthivorous fishes in a sandy shore on south-eastern Brazilian coast BJB
ZAHORCSAK,P.; SILVANO,R. A. M.; SAZIMA,I..
The feeding biology of eight species of benthivorous fishes was studied in a sandy shore at Anchieta Island, south-eastern Brazilian coast. The fishes fed mainly on Amphipoda and Mysidacea crustaceans. The diet of the most abundant species, the drum Umbrina coroides, was analyzed in three standard length classes (20-55, 56-90 and 91-135 mm). This sciaenid showed an ontogenetic diet shift from Mysidacea to Amphipoda. The feeding behaviour of the sciaenid U. coroides and the gerreid Eucinostomus gula was recorded while snorkeling. During their foraging both species uncovered small organisms buried in the sand. Notwithstanding general similarities in diet, U. coroides and E. gula presented differences in feeding behaviour and morphology. Two carangid species...

Patterns of gall-forming in Ossaea confertiflora (Melastomataceae) by Lopesia brasiliensis (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in an area of Atlantic Rainforest in Southeastern Brazil BJB
VRCIBRADIC,D.; ROCHA,C. F. D.; MONTEIRO,R. F..
Patterns of galling by the gall midge Lopesia brasiliensis (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) were studied in Ossaea confertiflora (Melastomataceae) in an Atlantic forest site at Ilha Grande, RJ. Out of the 81 plants surveyed, 55 (67.9%) bore galls. The number of galls per galled individual ranged from 1 to 261 and 94.4% of the galls were in leaves. The number of galls per galled leaf varied from 1 to 25. Total gall number was positively correlated with plant height. Larger and more ramified plants tended to have a smaller percentage of their leaves with galls and a lower density of galls per leaf than smaller plants. Plants that were close to other individuals of the same species tended to have more galls per leaf than relatively isolated plants. The observed...

Food resource utilization of the skates Rioraja agassizii (Müller & Henle, 1841) and Psammobatis extenta (Garman, 1913) on the continental shelf off Ubatuba, South-eastern Brazil BJB
MUTO,E. Y.; SOARES,L. S. H.; GOITEIN,R..
The feeding habits of Rioraja agassizii (syn. Raja agassizii) and Psammobatis extenta (syn. Psammobatis glansdissimilis) of the South-eastern Brazilian coast were studied by means of stomach content analysis. The samples were obtained on eight seasonal oceanographic cruises, carried out between October 1985 and July 1987. The importance of each food item was evaluated on the basis of the Index of Relative Importance and the feeding similarity by Percentage of Similarity. The results indicated that both species are benthic feeders, preying mainly on Crustacea, especially Amphipoda, Caridea and Brachyura. Teleostei were also important for R. agassizii. Seasonal variation of the diet seems to be associated with the availability of the prey, whose distribution...

NASCIMENTO,H. E. M.; DIAS,A. DA S.; TABANEZ,A. A. J.; VIANA,V. M..

Monochromatic and polychromatic visual backgrounds influence the response of area 17 and 18 neurons after stimulation with stationary and moving light bars BJB
KOCH,H. J..
The role of colour vision in night-active cats has not been elucidated completely hitherto. In order to assess the colour sensitivity in cat cortical neurons we used large isoluminant computer-generated monochromatic and polychromatic background stimuli which were superimposed on moving and stationary (on/off) light bars. Background stimuli were moved at different speeds either inphase or antiphase. The modulatory effect of the visual noise on the neuronal bar was the primary objective of the study. The maximum amplitudes of some 40% of the neurons tested was influenced by both moving and stationary bars. About two thirds of amplitude-sensitive cells showed aldo altered direction selectivity. Latencies and field widths, on the other hand, turned out to be...
