In vitro release of diclofenac diethylamine from gels: evaluation of generic semisolid drug products in Brazil BJPS
Goebel,Karin; Sato,Mayumi Eliza Otsuka; Souza,Dayse Fernanda de; Murakami,Fábio Seigi; Andreazza,Itamar Francisco.
In order for the pharmacological action of a topical dermal drug product to occur, the drug must first be released from the vehicle to be available to penetrate the skin layers and reach the site of action. Drug release is mainly dependent on the characteristics of the formulation. Currently, to register a generic or a similar drug product in Brazil performance testing of topical drug products for local action is not required. In this context, this aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro release of commercial diclofenac diethylamine gel products available on the Brazilian pharmaceutical market, using the vertical diffusion cell method. Factors which may influence the test, such as the type of membrane used, and the effect of the formulation...

Quercetin: a flavonoid with the potential to treat asthma BJPS
Fortunato,Laila Rigolin; Alves,Claudiney de Freitas; Teixeira,Maxelle Martins; Rogerio,Alexandre Paula.
Allergic asthma is a complex inflammatory disorder characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilic inflammation and hypersecretion of mucus. Current therapies include β2-agonists, cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 antagonists and corticosteroids. Although these drugs demonstrate beneficial effects, their adverse side effects limit their long-term use. Thus, the development of new compounds with similar therapeutic activities and reduced side effects is both desirable and necessary. Natural compounds are used in some current therapies, as plant-derived metabolites can relieve disease symptoms in the same manner as allopathic medicines. Quercetin is a flavonoid that is naturally found in many fruits and vegetables and has been shown to exert...

Development, stability and in vitro permeation studies of gels containing mometasone furoate for the treatment of dermatitis of the scalp BJPS
Salgado,Ana Cristina Gomes Barros; Silva,Alexandra Maria Nunes Nogueira da; Machado,Marta Cristina Jorge Cabral; Duarte,Maria Aida da Silva Costa; Ribeiro,Helena Margarida de Oliveira Marques.
Dermatological inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis often affect the scalp and the eyebrows. Although there are many dosage forms available, these are particularly critical anatomic regions for application of topical formulations because of the presence of hair. Lotions are therefore the recommended type of drug delivery system for these areas. The presence of hair may limit the application and thus the acceptability of the formulation and its compliance. Because of its low apparent viscosity, lotion application is unpleasant. Gels, given their consistency and adhesiveness, are a suitable alternative to lotions in this situation. The aim of this study was to formulate a stable gel containing mometasone...

Polymeric micelles containing resveratrol: development, characterization, cytotoxicity on tumor cells and antimicrobial activity BJPS
Almeida,Tamires Cunha; Seibert,Janaina Brandão; Almeida,Sávio Henrique de Souza; Amparo,Tatiane Roquete; Teixeira,Luiz Fernando de Medeiros; Barichello,Jose Mario; Postacchini,Bruna Bueno; Santos,Orlando David Henrique dos; Silva,Glenda Nicioli da.
Antimicrobial and antitumor activities of resveratrol, a compound found mainly in grapes, have already been demonstrated. However, its low bioavailability is a limiting factor for therapeutic application. Polymeric micelles can be an approach to solve this problem since they can encapsulate hydrophobic substances. We developed and characterized micellar formulations containing resveratrol and evaluated their cytotoxic and antimicrobial effects. The formulations were prepared by the cold dispersion method with different concentrations of F127 (5 or 10% w/w) and resveratrol (500 or 5000 µM). The formulations were characterized according to size, polydispersity index, pH, encapsulation rate and in vitro release. Cytotoxic effect was evaluated on a bladder...

A validated stability indicating HPLC method for the determination of process-related impurities in pantoprazole bulk drug and formulations BJPS
Pandey,Saurabh; Pandey,Preeti; Mishra,Durgesh; Singh,Umesh Kumar.
A stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed with short run time and validated for the assay of process related impurities of pantoprazole in bulk form. Resolution of drug, its potential impurities and degradation products were achieved on a Hypersil ODS column utilizing a gradient with 0.01 M phosphate buffer of pH 7 and acetonitrile as eluent, at the detection wavelength of 290 nm. Flow rate was set at 1 mL min-1. The procedure was found to be specific, linear (r=0.999), recovery (97.9-103%), LOD (0.043-0.047 µgmL-1), LOQ (0.13-0.14 µgmL-1) and robust. Acceptable robustness indicates that the assay method remains unaffected by small but deliberate variations. Pantoprazole was found to degrade in acidic,...
