Substantiation of the Barremian/Aptian boundary Naturalis
Bogdanova, T.N.; Prozorovsky, V.A..
This paper focuses on the Barremian/Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area. Results of a stratigraphical study of the uppermost Barremian and the lower Aptian succession in the Trans-Caspian area are presented. The bed-by-bed description of three sections — Keldzhe, Tekedzhik and Utuludzha — is given as well as detailed lithologic columns. Five ammonite zones are known in the studied stratigraphic interval — the Turkmeniceras turkmenicum, Deshayesites tuarkyricus, D. weissi, D. deshayesi, and Dufrenoya furcata zones. These zones are correlated with those of Europe. The Barremian/ Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area should be drawn at the base of the D. tuarkyricus Zone. It corresponds to the layers with the first occurrences of Deshayesites,...

Changes in the intertidal community structure after a mass mortality event in sandy beaches of Argentina Naturalis
Dadon, J.R..
After a massive mortality of the dominant species (the clam Mesodesma mactroides) occurred in 1995, changes in the intertidal community in sandy beaches of Argentina were monitored. Eight sampling stations were established in a 40 km open stretch and samples were taken every October each year up to 2001. Biomass, density, size frequency distribution and mean growth rates for the most abundant species were analyzed. During the mortality event, only the benthic stages of M. mactroides were affected, their total mean biomass diminishing from 1,399 g to 2 g per running meter beach. Post-mortality recruitment was normal and the growth rates for the youngest cohorts were similar to those previously reported. After a two years’ lag, the wedge clam Donax...

Molluscs and Echinoderms from Palaeolithic deposits in the Rock Shelter of Ksâr'akil, Lebanon Naturalis
Regteren, C.O. van.
INTRODUCTION The palaeolithic deposits of the rock shelter of Ksâr'Akil in the Antelias valley have been excavated by a group of American Jesuits in the years 1937-1938 and 1947-1948. Recently the fossil bones from these deposits were reported upon by my colleague Hooijer (1961). When he received the material for description it appeared that his samples contained a large collection of molluscan shells and a few spines of echinoderms as well. These are dealt with in the present paper. To the best of my knowledge they are all the remains of molluscs and echinoderms found during the excavation. For further details on the collection and the site I refer to Hooijer's paper, which also contains references to the literature on Ksâr'Akil. A few shells from the...

Overwinteringsgedrag van de nauwe korfslak Vertigo angustior (Mollusca) Naturalis
Boesveld, A..
Overwintering habits of the land snail Vertigo angustior (Mollusca) During a mollusc survey in 2004 en 2005 in the province of Zuid-Holland special attention was paid to Vertigo angustior. The species was observed overwintering in large groups, up to hundreds of specimens together, between mosses (especially Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp.) in small patches of poplar forest (Populus nigra and Populus alba) in the old dunes. As far as we know, this gregarious behaviour is described here for the first time. Many of the snails were found in a position where they had incorporated a moss leaf into the epiphragm closing the shell’s aperture, thereby achoring themselves to the vegetation, possibly for stability.

The anatomy and phylogeny of the African land snail Limicena Connolly, 1925 (Pulmonata: Cerastidae) Naturalis
Mordan, P..
An investigation of the anatomy of Limicena confirms its position as a monotypic genus in the Cerastidae. Phylogenetic analysis places Limicena as the most plesiomorphic member of a clade characterised by a pseudosigmurethrous excretory system, the more advanced members of which are Rhachistia, Amimopina and Edouardia. Its position at the base of such a widely dispersed, advanced clade with apparently xerophilic adaptations lends support to a dispersalist hypothesis for the extra-Afrotropical distribution of the Cerastidae.

The exotic fresh-water snail Helisoma duryi (Wetherby, 1879) (Planorbidae) In Southern Africa Naturalis
Appleton, C.C..
INTRODUCTION Van Bruggen (1974) discussed the identity of specimens of the North American pulmonate genus Helisoma Swainson, 1840 (Mollusca: Planorbidae) from three localities in southern Africa. He identified Helisoma (Seminolina) cf. duryi seminole Pilsbry, 1934, from a farm dam in South West Africa and Helisoma (?Pierosoma) sp. from an artificial pond at Mandini in Zululand (recorded as Helisoma sp. by Brown, 1967) and from Cape Point on the Cape Peninsula. These identifications were based on shell characters since only dry material was available. Snails belonging to Helisoma have been collected by the present author from two additional localities and are examined below. Both these populations occur(red) in the suburban areas of major South African...

Über eine neue Lindbergia-art von Kérkyra, Griechenland (Gastropoda: Zonitidae) Naturalis
Pintér, L.; Riedel, A..
Lindbergia gittenbergeri spec. nov. (Abb. 1-3) Beschreibung. — Schale...

Catalogue of the Bursae in 's Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie Naturalis
Bayer, Ch..
Since the publication in 1908 of the „Catalogue systématique des Mollusques" by R. HORST and M. M. SCHEPMAN, the collection of 's Rijks Museum van Natuurlijke Historie has attained a not unimportant extension, so that since long this catalogue is no more up to date. After the revision of the genus Bursa, which resulted into the addition to the collection of a great deal of hitherto unidentified material and which brought about several changes in the catalogue, it seemed necessary to me, to edit a new catalogue of this genus, and it is my intention to publish such a list every time when a new part of the collection has been revised. In order to give this catalogue a more general value, I have included as far as possible, all the true species of Bursa which...

Petricola pholadiformis Lam. in Holz Naturalis
Martin-Icke, H..

Belemnitellid coleoids (Mollusca, Cephalopoda) from the type Maastrichtian, the Netherlands and Belgium Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
Belemnitellid coleoids abound at some levels within the Gulpen and Maastricht formations in the study area, and ‘belemnite graveyards’ have long been known from the Bovenste Bos (Epen) and Slenaken-Beutenaken areas in southern Limburg, the Netherlands. Recent studies have demonstrated the presence of at least three species of the genus Belemnitella d’Orbigny, 1840, and five of Belemnella Nowak, 1913, and its subgenera Belemnella, Pachybelemnella Schulz, 1979, and Neobelemnella Naidin, 1975. Representatives of Belemnitella junior Nowak, 1913, and Belemnella (Neobelemnella) gr. kazimiroviensis (Skołozdrówna, 1932) are the only coleoids to reach the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, and members of the latter group may even have persisted into the earliest...

Host specificity and phylogenetic relationships among Atlantic Ovulidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) Naturalis
Reijnen, B.T.; Hoeksema, B.W.; Gittenberger, E..
Ovulid gastropods and their octocoral hosts were collected along the leeward coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. New molecular data of Caribbean and a single Atlantic species were combined with comparable data of Indo-Pacific Ovulidae and a single East-Pacific species from GenBank. Based on two DNA markers, viz. CO-I and 16S, the phylogenetic relationships among all ovulid species of which these data are available are reconstructed. The provisional results suggest a dichotomy between the Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific taxa. Fully grown Simnialena uniplicata closely resembles juvenile Cyphoma gibbosum conchologically. Cymbovula acicularis and C. bahamaensis might be synonyms. The assignments of Caribbean host species for Cyphoma gibbosum, C....

A new species of living glass-scallop, genus Similipecten (Bivalvia, Propeamussiidae), from the Bahama Islands (West Indies) Naturalis
Dijkstra, H.H..
Introduction Redfern described and figured a propeamussiid species (as Cyclopecten sp.) from the Bahama Islands, which he compared with Cyclopecten nanus Verril & Bush in Verrill, 1897,known from the sub-tropical and tropical western Atlantic. In fact, both species are more morphologically related to Similipecten than to Cyclopecten and therefore both are here classified with Similipecten.
