Accumulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in non-waxy and waxy rice germ during water soaking Thai Agricultural
Patcharee Tungtrakul; Warunee Varanyanond; Vipa Surojanametakul; Ladda Wattanasiritham.
Rice germ contains protein, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA has been proved to be effective for lowering the blood pressure of human being. It has neurotransmission functions and tranquilizer effects. determination of GABA in rice germ and brown rice were investigated by using low-amylose, high-amylose and waxy rice cultivars. Percentage of germ weight showed no relation to the GABA content. The amount and patterns of the GABA accumulation varied depending on the cultivar. GABA content in most of rice varieties increased during incubation. The accumulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in non-waxy and waxy rice germ during water soaking were determined by using 14 different cultivars. Water soaking can enrich...

Determination of vanadium accumulation in onion root cells (Allium cep a L.) and its correlation with toxicity Biocell
Marcano,Letty; Carruyo,Ingrid; Fernández,Yusmary; Montiel,Xiomara; Torrealba,Zaida.
The vanadium is a metal that presents great interest from the toxicological point of view, because of the numerous alterations that can take place in different biological systems. This work evaluated the capacity of vanadium accumulation and its correlation with genotoxic effects in root cells of Allium cepa L. The bulbs were cultivated in renovated filtered water each 24 h, at a temperature of 25 ± 0.5 ° C, in darkness and constant aeration. Treatments were carried out under the same experimental conditions, using water solutions of vanadium of 25, 50, 75 and 100 µ g/g for 0, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. A control was carried out where metal solution was substituted by distilled water. After the treatment, the meristems were fixed with alcohol - acetic acid (3:1)...

Effects of sub-lethal exposure of lead acetate on histopathology of gills, liver, kidney and muscle and its accumulation in these organs of Clarias gariepinus BABT
Al-Balawi,Hmoud Fares Alkahem; Al-Akel,Ali Sulaiman; Al-Misned,Fahad; Suliman,El Amin Mohamed; Al-Ghanim,Khalid Abdullah; Mahboob,Shahid; Ahmad,Zubair.
The aim of this work was to study the effects of sub-lethal exposure of lead acetate on the histopathology of the gills, liver, kidney and muscle and its accumulation in these organs of Clarias gariepinus. Results showed that lead accumulation in the tissues of C. gariepinus was dependent on the exposure period and lead concentration. Gills and liver were the predominant storage tissue and the order of accumulation in tissues was gill > liver > kidney > muscle. Some structural changes were observed in different organs, especially in the gills of the fishes exposed to lead acetate. Epithelial hypertrophy and epithelial lifting were apparent in the gills of exposed fishes. The degeneration of cytoplasm and secondary lamellae was also observed....

Cyanobacterial toxins in Portugal: effects on aquatic animals and risk for human health BJMBR
Vasconcelos,V.M..
Toxic cyanobacteria are common in Portuguese freshwaters and the most common toxins are microcystins. The occurrence of microcystin-LR (MCYST-LR) has been reported since 1990 and a significant number of water reservoirs that are used for drinking water attain high levels of this toxin. Aquatic animals that live in eutrophic freshwater ecosystems may be killed by microcystins but in many cases the toxicity is sublethal and so the animals can survive long enough to accumulate the toxins and transfer them along the food chain. Among these, edible mollusks, fish and crayfish are especially important because they are harvested and sold for human consumption. Mussels that live in estuarine waters and rivers where toxic blooms occur may accumulate toxins without...

Effects of phosphorus on polyphosphate accumulation by Cunninghamella elegans BJM
Lima,Marcos Antonio Barbosa de; Nascimento,Aline Elesbão do; Souza,Wanderley de; Fukushima,Kazutaka; Campos-Takaki,Galba Maria de.
The content of inorganic polyphosphate and the polymeric degree of these compounds were evaluated during the growth of Cunninghamella elegans in medium containing varying orthophosphate (Pi) concentrations. For this purpose, a combination of chemical methods for polyphosphate extraction and ultrastructural cytochemistry were used. The orthophosphate and glucose consumption was also determined during the fungal cultivation. At Pi concentrations of 0.5, 2.5 and 0.0 g/L, the maximum amounts of biomass were 3.18, 3.29 and 0.24 g/L, respectively. During growth the cells accumulated Pi from the medium. At three days of growth the biomass consumed up to 100 and 95% of Pi from the media at initial concentrations of 0.5 and 2.5 g/L, respectively. Polyphosphate was...

Aluminum toxicity reduces the nutritional efficiency of macronutrients and micronutrients in sugarcane seedlings Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Borges,Carolina Eggers; Cazetta,Jairo Osvaldo; Sousa,Francisco Bruno Ferreira de; Oliveira,Kamilla Silva.
ABSTRACT Although the effects of aluminum on the content and accumulation of mineral nutrients in crops have been studied, but nothing is known about its effect on the nutritional efficiency of sugarcane. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of aluminum toxicity on nutritional efficiency, nutrient accumulation, and growth of sugarcane seedling. Sugarcane seedlings of the genotype IACSP95-5000, obtained from one-bud mini-cuttings (3 cm), were used in the test. Seedlings were subjected to treatments in a completely randomized design, with eight Al concentrations in the nutrient solution (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 mg L−1) and three replicates, totaling 24 experimental units. Analyses determined the contents, accumulation, and absorption,...

Micronutrients accumulation at different maize development stages Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Borges,Iran Dias; Von Pinho,Renzo Garcia; Pereira,José Luiz de Andrade Rezende.
The study of micronutrients accumulation as a function of plant development stage is of fundamental importance to subsidize strategies for fertilizer application and minimum amount to maintain soil fertility. This study evaluated micronutrient accumulation in two maize cultivars at different development stages. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications in split-plots, with two maize hybrids as the plots and sampling time according to development stages as sub-plots. Maize accumulated minimum amounts of B, Cu, Mn, and Zn in the initial stages of development, and the maximum accumulated values were observed after 100 days seedling emergency. The evaluated hybrids accumulated maximum of Zn and Cu close to physiological maturity....
