Water-soluble nutrients in aerial plant parts of peanut and white oat as affected by lime and gypsum application Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Marques,Rúbia Renata; Crusciol,Carlos Alexandre Costa; Castro,Gustavo Spadotti Amaral; Perim,Lucas.
Lime and gypsum influence nutrient availability and uptake, as well as the content of organic acids in the aerial plant parts. These changes, quantified by plant analysis of soluble nutrients, may potentiate the effect of soil amendment, ensuring the sustainability of the no-tillage system. In this sense the effect of lime and gypsum surface application on the content of water-soluble nutrients in peanut and oat residues was evaluated. The experiment was conducted on an Oxisol in Botucatu (SP) in the growing seasons 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. It was arranged in a randomized block design in split plots with four replications, where lime rates represented the plots and presence or absence of gypsum application the subplots. Peanut was grown in summer and white...

Nomura,Edson Shigueaki; Cuquel,Francine Lorena; Damatto Junior,Erval Rafael; Bezerra,Daniela Peixoto; Borges,Ana Lúcia.
Abstract There are several banana cultivars resistant to Black Sigatoka disease and to Panama disease, but due to the lack of information regarding post-harvest characteristics, many are rejected in the market. Nitrogen and potassium fertilization may help to improve the sensory characteristics of ripe banana, but there is lack of studies on its effects on banana cultivation, especially those resistant to diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the post-harvest characteristics of ‘Prata-Anã’, ‘BRS Platina’ and ‘PA94-01’ banana cultivars at four N and K2O fertilization levels (NK0: no fertilization, NK1: 175 and 285 kg ha-1 year-1, NK2: 350 and 570 kg ha-1 year-1, NK3: 525 and 855 kg ha-1 year-1, respectively) in three production cycles. It could...

Soil acidity, liming and soybean performance under no-till Scientia Agricola
Caires,Eduardo Fávero; Barth,Gabriel; Garbuio,Fernando José; Churka,Susana.
The effects of soil chemical changes on soybean root growth, mineral nutrition and grain yield, as a result of surface application of lime under no-till (NT), are still under discussion. A field trial was carried out on a loamy dystrophic Typic Hapludox at Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, using a completely randomized block design with three replicates, in a split-plot experiment. The main plots received four dolomitic lime rates applied on the surface (0, 2, 4, and 6 Mg ha-1) in July 1993. In the subplots, two dolomitic lime rates were reapplied on the surface (0 and 3 Mg ha-1) in June 2000. After nine years, liming increased pH, exchangeable Ca2+ and reduced exchangeable Al3+ as well as soil Al3+ saturation down to a 60 cm depth. Re-liming, after two...

Recent advances in aluminum toxicity and resistance in higher plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Vitorello,Victor Alexandre; Capaldi,Flávia Regina; Stefanuto,Vanderlei Antonio.
Aluminum toxicity is a major soil constraint to food and biomass production throughout the world. Considerable advances in the understanding of the mechanism of resistance involving exudation of organic acids have been made in recent years. However, despite intense research efforts, there are many aspects of Al toxicity that remain unclear. This article reviews the features of the chemistry of Al relevant to its toxicity followed by an examination of the mechanisms of toxicity and resistance. Emphasis, however, is given to the mechanisms of Al toxicity, since resistance has been covered recently by several reviews. Some topics which are specifically discussed in this review are: a) The possible role of cellular effects of low pH in Al toxicity, which has...

Costa,João Carlos Miguel; Espeschit,Isis de Freitas; Pieri,Fábio Alessandro; Benjamin,Laércio Anjos; Moreira,Maria Aparecida Scatamburlo.
Bacterial biofilms are involved in the aggravation and recurrence of clinical mastitis in dairy herds. Several factors such as pH, temperature, concentration of O2 and glucose can affect their induction and growth rates. In this study, biofilm production was demonstrated by 27 Escherichia coli strains isolated from bovine mastitis at different pH values depending on the availability of glucose, mimicking conditions found in mammary glands affected by the disease. Biofilm formation was analyzed by spectrophotometric analysis in microtiter plate with 16 different culture media and by scanning electron microscopy. Biofilm formation was greater in isolates cultured under conditions associated with low glucose availability (0.5% or 1.5%) and with either an...
