Selected trace elements (Cd, Cu, Hg, Se, Zn) were measured in the kidneys and the liver of 104 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded along the coasts of France, Galicia (Spain), Ireland, Scotland (UK), and the Netherlands. Generally, relatively low concentrations of toxic elements were encountered in the tissues of European porpoises, except for two individuals, which displayed high hepatic Hg concentrations. Also, elevated Cd levels obtained in Scottish porpoises could be related to their feeding preferences and this result suggests an increase of the proportion of cephalopods in their diet with latitude. Daily growth increments measured in the otolith of Thunnus atlanticus were used to estimate the age and growth of individuals. which were sampled from an artisanal fishery operating around fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored off Martinique Island. In this study, 76 otoliths were analysed for fish ranging from 20 to 68 cm fork lengths (FL). The fish were caught using trolling lines at depths ranging from 0 to 10 m. Frequency demodulation on otolith numerical images for the automation of fish age estimation ArchiMer

A method to assist the reading of calcified structures with digital images is proposed. An a priori growth pattern is introduced in the image processing to take into account both the variability of the ring size and the non-linearity of their growth. The introduction of biological knowledge is performed within a demodulation processing using the reciprocal growth function. The ring number is estimated by spectral analysis. Effects of age and environment on survival of summer mortality by two selected groups of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

This study investigated the effects of age (first or second summer of life) and environment (three study sites on French coasts) on summer mortality in Crassostrea gigas, using three generations of oysters produced during the Morest project. For each generation, two groups of oysters, selected either as 'resistant' (R) or 'susceptible' (S) to summer mortality at the age of 6 months in Rivière d'Auray (RA, South Brittany), were evaluated. Evidence of underestimation of European hake growth in the Bay of Biscay, and its relationship with bias in the agreed method of age estimation ArchiMer

In 2002, a pilot experiment on hake tagging was carried out using methodology specifically developed to catch and handle fish in,good condition. By the end of 2005, 36 hake and five tags had been returned to the laboratory (a 3.1% return rate) with a maximum time at liberty of 1066 days. The somatic growth of the recoveries proved to be twofold higher than that expected from published von Bertalanffy growth functions for the species in the Bay of Biscay. Identification of skipjack tuna juveniles based on DNA control region sequences and potential spawning area around reunion island ArchiMer

In this study, we confirmed that DNA control region can be used to identify potential spawning area from pelagic juveniles species. We used the mitochondrial DNA control region to identify tuna juveniles predated by common dolphinfish and sampled in surface waters around Reunion Island. These were skipjack juveniles at an early stage (small length and young age). The biological results confirmed the species identification based on DNA analysis. Evolution of glass fibre-resin composites (polyester, epoxy and vinylester) after 30 years in a marine environment has been anticipated by the compilation of the Naval Construction Direction test results. This study showed that 120 degree C epoxy prepreg, in spite of improved initial performance, was more affected by water environment aging than other composites. Post-curing of epoxy and vinylester composites does not significantly improve resistance to water degradation except in the case of high temperature aging (60-70 degree C).

Two different biomasses (100 g multiplied by m super(-2) and 1 kg multiplied by m super(-2)) of oysters were put in identical sea-water ponds, thus leading to different trophic conditions, corresponding to rearing techniques. Changes in growth, biochemical composition and sexual maturation were recorded for two age groups. The first one included 9 month-old oysters and the second one 21 month-old oysters, at the beginning of the experiment. Age, growth and mortality of the starry weever Trachinus radiatus Cuvier, 1829 in the Tunisian waters ArchiMer

Age, growth and mortality of the Starry weever Trachinus radiatus were studied for the first time from 214 individuals collected in the Gulf of Tunis between February 2014 and January 2016. The significant relationship between length-weight was observed for males (a = 0.011, b = 2.992, R2 = 0.981, n = 77) and females (a = 0.010, b = 3.036, R² =0.957, n = 109). Age was estimated by the observation of otoliths transverse thin sections. Age of individuals ranged from 1 to 15 years. The precision was measured by two age estimations from two experts and indicated a good agreement between them (PA = 85.6%, CV = 3.8% and IAPE = 4.1%). In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups.
