Immunomodulatory properties of Alternanthera tenella Colla aqueous extracts in mice BJMBR
Guerra,R.N.M.; Pereira,H.-A.W.; Silveira,L.M.S.; Olea,R.S.G..
Plants from the genus Alternanthera are thought to possess antimicrobial and antiviral properties. In Brazilian folk medicine, the aqueous extract of A. tenella Colla is used for its anti-inflammatory activity. The present study investigated the immunomodulatory property of A. tenella extract by evaluating the antibody production in male albino Swiss mice weighing 20-25 g (10 per group). The animals received standard laboratory diet and water ad libitum. The effect of A. tenella extract (5 and 50 mg/kg, ip) was evaluated in mice immunized with sheep red blood cells (SRBC 10%, ip) as T-dependent antigen, or in mice stimulated with mitogens (10 µg, Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide, LPS, ip). The same doses (5 and 50 mg/kg, ip) of A. tenella extract were...

Prevalence of diphtheria and tetanus antibodies and circulation of Corynebacterium diphtheriae in São Paulo, Brazil BJMBR
Divino-Goes,K.G.; Moraes-Pinto,M.I. de; Dinelli,M.I.S.; Casagrande,S.T.; Bonetti,T.C.S.; Andrade,P.R.; Weckx,L.Y..
The introduction of routine vaccination against tetanus and diphtheria in Brazil has decreased the incidence and changed the epidemiology of both diseases. We then investigated the prevalence of Corynebacterium diphtheriae carrier status and diphtheria and tetanus immunity in São Paulo, Brazil. From November 2001 to March 2003, 374 individuals were tested for the presence of C. diphtheriae in the naso-oropharynx and of serum diphtheria and tetanus antibodies. Participants were all healthy individuals without acute or chronic pathologies and they were stratified by age as follows: 0-12 months and 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-24, 25-39, 40-59, and ³60 years. Antibodies were assessed using a double-antigen ELISA. C. diphtheriae species were identified by biochemical...

Rabies infection and specific effect of vaccination in mice selected for high and low immunobiological parameters BJMBR
Queiroz-da-Silva,L.H.; De-Franco,M.; Sant'Anna,O.A.
Innate and acquired resistance to rabies infection was investigated in mice genetically selected for high (H) or low (L) antibody responsiveness from selections I, III and IV and in mice selected for maximal (AIRmax) or minimal (AIRmin) acute inflammatory reaction. These mouse lines were infected intramuscularly with different virus dilutions and the LD50 was determined. The HIII and HIV mouse lines were more susceptible than the LIII and LIV lines and the HI line showed a discrete but higher resistance than the LI line. Analysis of the interline (H x L) F1 hybrids from selections III and IV indicated different dominance effects on the "resistant" and" susceptible" phenotypes when the route of vaccination was changed. No differences were observed between...

Aging reduces the primary humoral response and the in vitro cytokine production in mice BJMBR
Simioni,P.U.; Costa,E.H.; Tamashiro,W.M.S.C..
Aging is accompanied by a decrease in several physiological functions that make older individuals less responsive to environmental challenges. In the present study, we analyzed the immune response of female BALB/c mice (N = 6) of different ages (from 2 to 96 weeks) and identified significant age-related alterations. Immunization with hapten-protein (trinitrophenyl-bovine serum albumin) conjugates resulted in lower antibody levels in the primary and secondary responses of old mice (72 weeks old). Moreover, young mice (2, 16, and 32 weeks old) maintained specific antibodies in their sera for longer periods after primary immunization than did old mice. However, a secondary challenge efficiently induced memory in old mice, as shown by the increased antibody...

Effect of aging and oral tolerance on dendritic cell function BJMBR
Simioni,P.U.; Fernandes,L.G.R.; Gabriel,D.L.; Tamashiro,W.M.S.C..
Oral tolerance can be induced in some mouse strains by gavage or spontaneous ingestion of dietary antigens. In the present study, we determined the influence of aging and oral tolerance on the secretion of co-stimulatory molecules by dendritic cells (DC), and on the ability of DC to induce proliferation and cytokine secretion by naive T cells from BALB/c and OVA transgenic (DO11.10) mice. We observed that oral tolerance could be induced in BALB/c mice (N = 5 in each group) of all ages (8, 20, 40, 60, and 80 weeks old), although a decline in specific antibody levels was observed in the sera of both tolerized and immunized mice with advancing age (40 to 80 weeks old). DC obtained from young, adult and middle-aged (8, 20, and 40 weeks old) tolerized mice were...

Performance comparison between broilers positive and negative for antibodies against the chicken anemia virus BJM
Rubin,Lauricio Librelotto; Ávila,Luiz Antônio Faccenda de; Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal; Wald,Vera; Canal,Cláudio Wageck.
The chicken anemia virus (CAV) is present in virtually every country investigated, Brazil including. The aim of this study was to determine what the difference in performance is between positive (progeny of breeders vaccinated or with natural infection) and negative broilers to the presence of antibodies against the CAV in currently intensive raising systems. As a result, it was observed that negative broilers were significantly heavier than positive broilers. Negative males had a final weight 5.43% higher than positive males. There was no significant difference among different treatments in relation to parameters as mortality and feeding conversion. These study indicated that the presence of antibodies against CAV in broilers - may it be through...
