High density flow-through culturing of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> on inert feeds: preliminary results with a modified culture system OMA

A modified filter system is described for the intensive culturing of <i>Artemia</i> in a continuously renewed medium. Extrapolated to a 1 m³ tank, 25 kg live weight <i>Artemia</i> could be produced over a culture period of two weeks on a diet of micronized and defatted rice bran using the salt enriched effluent of an abandoned geothermal well as a culture medium.

The flow-through column: a simple and multipurpose rearing device OMA

A simple flow-through system for culturing or colonization purpose is described. It consists of piled up petri-dishes placed on top of a water reservoir with an air-water lifting tube. Each of the seperately removable units is composed of the bottom of a petri-dish glued on top of the lid of another one. A short piece of plastic tubing, fitting tightly into an exentrically drilled hole in the bottom part of the unit, permits a continuous flow of water through the whole column.

Controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> cysts under standard conditions in a recirculating culture system OMA

A flow-through culture system is described for the controlled production of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in 10 liter aquaria using 50 promille artificial seawater enriched with Fe-EDTA as culture medium, micronised rice bran as food source and cyclic flushes of the cultures with N<sub>2</sub>-gas as induction mechanism for oviparity. The culture water is recirculated over a rotating biological contactor, a settling tank and a UV disinfection unit. Cysts are continuously harvested by filtration of the culture effluent. Production yields average 0.5 g dry cysts per day and per aquarium.

Selection of bacteria enhancing the growth rate of axenically hatched rotifers (<i>Brachionus plicatilis</i>) OMA

The effect of bacterial strains on the growth rate of rotifers, Brachionus plicatilis, was determined under monoxenic conditions. The first objective was to obtain sterile rotifer cultures starting from rotifer resting eggs using merthiolate or glutaraldehyde as disinfectant. Sterile rotifer cultures were obtained, without affecting the hatching ability of the resting eggs, when 0.05 µl/l glutaraldehyde was used. This disinfection procedure was used to examine the effect of 20 bacterial strains, isolated from well-performing live-feed production systems, on the population growth rate of rotifers cultured under monoxenic conditions. The brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> , an excellent live food source in aquaculture, has been studied as a carrier to deliver selected chemotherapeutic agents to fish for prophylactic treatment of infectious diseases. To monitor the efficiency of incorporation of trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole in <i><i>Artemia</i> franciscana</i>, a sensitive and specific analytical method was developed. Cofeeding of phospholipids to turbot <i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L. larvae as a tool to reduce live food consumption OMA

The possible benefits of feeding a formulated diet, together with <i>Artemia</i> , to first-feeding turbot larvae were investigated. Five dietary regimes were used: control ( <i>Artemia</i> only), cofeeding with a diet rich in phospholipid (PL) from bovine brain, cofeeding with a diet rich in free fatty acids (FFA) from the same source, cofeeding with a commercial diet (Lansy A2), and a formulated feed only (PL-rich diet). All treatments with artificial diets and the control treatment that received <i>Artemia</i> exclusively gave a similar survival rate of the fish at day 29. Perspectives in maricultural technologies OMA

Starting with the major issues of the recent World Conference on Aquaculture, organized in 1981 jointly by the European Mariculture Society and the World Mariculture Society, the paper indicates a number of new and appealing maricultural technologies in shellfish and fish farming. It is postulated that several of the techniques described will have a far-reaching impact on maricultural production in the next decade. Special attention is given to the potential of the mass production of brine shrimp <i>Artemia</i> in extensive and intensive operations, and in particular to its key role in vertically integrated aquaculture.

Automatization in the food distribution is necessary for the controlled culturing of filter feeders in high densities. Numerous devices have been described to distribute specific quantities of food suspension at preset time intervals (cf. review in Kinne, 1977). The number of systems which, however, add food whenever a preset critical turbidity of the medium is exceeded are rather limited. They furthermore are either very expensive (sophisticated equipment) or have to be cleaned very often (cf. review in Sorgeloos et al., 1976). The use of <i>Artemia</i> cysts in aquaculture: the concept of "hatching efficiency" and description of a new method for cyst processing OMA

The quality of brands of <i>Artemia</i> cysts should be expressed on a weight basis, namely the number of live nauplii hatching out per unit of weight of product and not as a "hatching percentage" since the latter concept does not take into account the degree of impurity of the material. A standardized method for the determination of the hatching efficiency is proposed. A new methodology for cyst processing has been worked out at laboratory scale, based on a 2-step cleaning (brine and tap water) followed by dehydration (air or brine) or decapsulation and dehydration (brine).

Live-food mediated drug delivery as a tool for disease treatment in larviculture: 2. A case study with European seabass OMA

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of oral delivery of the antibiotics Trimethoprim (TMP) and Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) to marine fish larvae through incorporation of these antibiotics into the live food organism <i>Artemia</i>. SMX and TMP were selected for their wide range action against gram negative pathogenic bacteria and because of their limited solubility in seawater. Ormetoprim-Sulfadimethoxine (brand name Romet-30) is a new combination of a similar antimicrobial drug used in aquaculture. Diseased penaeid larvae fed Romet-30 through the food chain exhibited greater survival than the untreated ones.
