Neogene evolution of the mixed carbonate-siliciclastic system in the Gulf of Papua, Papua New Guinea ArchiMer
Tcherepanov, Evgueni N.; Droxler, Andre W.; Lapointe, Philippe; Dickens, Gerald R.; Bentley, Sam J.; Beaufort, Luc; Peterson, Larry C.; Daniell, James; Opdyke, Bradley N..
This paper outlines the evolution of the late Cenozoic mixed carbonate-siliciclastic depositional system in the Gulf of Papua (GoP), using seismic, gravity, multibeam bathymetry, well data sets, and Landsat imagery. The deposition of the mixed sedimentary sequences was influenced by dynamic interplay of tectonics, eustasy, in situ carbonate production, and siliciclastic sediment supply. The roles of these major factors are estimated during different periods of the GoP margin evolution. The Cenozoic mixed system in the GoP formed in distinct phases. The first phase ( Late Cretaceous-Paleocene) was mostly driven by tectonics. Rifting created grabens and uplifted structural blocks which served later as pedestals for carbonate edifices. Active neritic...

Rasmus; Sabatella, Rosaria; Smith, Anthony D. M.; Stokes, Kevin; Thoegersen, Thomas; Ulrich, Clara.
This study compares the details and performance of fisheries management between the EU and a selection of other countries worldwide: Iceland, New Zealand, and Australia, which are considered in many respects to be among the most advanced in the world in fisheries management. Fisheries management in the EU, Iceland, Australia, and New Zealand has developed following different paths, despite being based on similar instruments and principles. Iceland, Australia, and New Zealand have been at the forefront of developing management practices such as stakeholder involvement, legally binding management targets (Australia, New Zealand), individual transferable quotas, and discard bans (Iceland, New Zealand). The EU has since the beginning of the 21st century taken...

Deep water geomorphology of the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate system, Gulf of Papua ArchiMer
Francis, Jason M.; Daniell, James J.; Droxler, Andre W.; Dickens, Gerald R.; Bentley, Samuel J.; Peterson, Larry C.; Opdyke, Bradley N.; Beaufort, Luc.
The Gulf of Papua (GoP) has become a focal point for understanding the deposition and accumulation of siliciclastic and carbonate material along and across a low-latitude continental margin. Although studies have addressed submarine geomorphological features on the inner and middle shelves, as well as processes that may have led to their formation, the seafloor of adjacent slope regions remains poorly documented. This study presents and interprets results from approximately 13,000 line-km of multibeam bathymetry, 9500 line-km of 3.5 kHz seismic, and 122 sediment cores that were collected from the GoP shelf edge and slope, primarily on two cruises (PANASH and PECTEN). Bathymetric maps, in conjunction with the seismic profiles and cores, were used to make...

New nemertean worms (Carcinonemertidae) on bythograeid crabs (Decapoda : Brachyura) from pacific hydrothermal vent sites ArchiMer
Shields, J; Segonzac, Michel.
Several species of crabs from hydrothermal vent sites in the Pacific Ocean Were found to be infested by small, symbiotic nemertean worms. Worms occurred on both male and female crabs, and were located in mucous sheaths adhering to the axillae between the limbs of males and females, the setae of the pleopods of females, and the sterna of infested male and female crabs. Only juvenile and regressed adult worms were observed, primarily because no ovigerous hosts were examined. Similar species of worms mature by eating eggs, then regress or die after host eclosion. Based on the size of the worms from file vent crabs, their habitus with their crustacean hosts, the presence of accessory stylet pouches, and the presence of a single stylet on a large basis...

Preferential Riverine Export of Fine Volcanogenic Particles to the Southeast Australian Margin ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Douglas, Grant B.; Denton, Geoff J.; Monin, Laurence; De Deckker, Patrick.
We report on rare earth element and neodymium isotopic compositions in a series of grain-size fractions separated from river suspended matter in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) and a nearby marine sediment core (MD03-2607) offshore south-eastern Australia. This source-to-sink approach was used to further investigate the extent to which sediment sorting may control the geochemistry of suspended loads in rivers, and to provide constraints on the source of the detrital sediment material exported to the ocean. Our results provide further compelling evidence that significant size-dependent geochemical decoupling can occur in river systems, accounting here for Nd isotopic (εNd) differences of up to eight epsilon-units between silt (>25 μm) and colloidal...

Overview of the 1990 viral gastro-enteritis outbreak from oysters ArchiMer
Bird, P; Kraa, E.
In 1990 there were 57 separate outbreaks of viral gastro-enteritis over 18 days implicating raw oysters from a large oyster producing area. Of 1,750 people involved in 11 outbreaks, 550 ate oysters and of these 446 (81 %) were ill (mean incubation period 36 hours) with symptoms persisting for several days. Norwalk virus was detected in patients' stools and there was serological evidence of Norwalk viral infection in blood specimens. Remaining opened oysters (11 samples) from implicated batches were examined for standard plate count, faecal coliforms and Escherichia coli with only 1 sample complying with micro biological standards. Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus were detected at low levels while Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni, and...

Climatic records over the past 30 ka from temperate Australia - a synthesis from the Oz-INTIMATE workgroup ArchiMer
Petherick, L.; Bostock, H.; Cohen, T. J.; Fitzsimmons, K.; Tibby, J.; Fletcher, M. -s.; Moss, P.; Reeves, J.; Mooney, S.; Barrows, T.; Kemp, J.; Jansen, J.; Nanson, G.; Dosseto, A..
Temperate Australia sits between the heat engine of the tropics and the cold Southern Ocean, encompassing a range of rainfall regimes and falling under the influence of different climatic drivers. Despite this heterogeneity, broad-scale trends in climatic and environmental change are evident over the past 30 ka. During the early glacial period (similar to 30-22 ka) and the Last Glacial Maximum (similar to 22-18 ka), climate was relatively cool across the entire temperate zone and there was an expansion of grasslands and increased fluvial activity in regionally important Murray Darling Basin. The temperate region at this time appears to be dominated by expanded sea ice in the Southern Ocean forcing a northerly shift in the position of the oceanic fronts and...

A 5.3‐million‐year history of monsoonal precipitation in northwestern Australia ArchiMer
Stuut, Jan‐berend W.; De Deckker, Patrick; Saavedra‐pellitero, Mariem; Bassinot, Franck; Drury, Anna‐joy; Walczak, Maureen H.; Nagashima, Kana; Murayama, Masafumi.
New proxy records from deep‐sea sediment cores from the northwestern continental margin of Western Australian reveal a 5.3 million‐year (Ma) history of aridity and tropical‐monsoon activity in northwestern Australia. Following the warm and dry early Pliocene (~5.3 Ma), the northwestern Australian continent experienced a gradual increase in humidity peaking at about 3.8 Ma with higher than present‐day rainfall. Between 3.8 and about 2.8 Ma, climate became progressively more arid with more rainfall variability. Coinciding with the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciations and the intensification of the northern hemisphere monsoon, aridity continued to increase overall from 2.8 Ma until today, with greater variance in precipitation and an increased...

Information preferences for the evaluation of coastal development impacts on ecosystem services: A multi-criteria assessment in the Australian context ArchiMer
Marre, Jean-baptiste; Pascoe, Sean; Thebaud, Olivier; Jennings, Sarah; Boncoeur, Jean; Coglan, Louisa.
Ecosystem based management requires the integration of various types of assessment indicators. Understanding stakeholders' information preferences is important, in selecting those indicators that best support management and policy. Both the preferences of decision-makers and the general public may matter, in democratic participatory management institutions. This paper presents a multi-criteria analysis aimed at quantifying the relative importance to these groups of economic, ecological and socio-economic indicators usually considered when managing ecosystem services in a coastal development context. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is applied within two nationwide surveys in Australia, and preferences of both the general public and decision-makers for...

A retrospective analysis of the effects of adopting individual transferable quotas in the Tasmanian red rock lobster, Jasus edwardsii, fishery ArchiMer
Hamon, Katell; Thebaud, Olivier; Frusher, Stewart; Little, L. Richard.
Individual transferable quotas (ITQ) were implemented in the Tasmanian red rock lobster fishery in 1998 and ten years later we assessed the impacts on the fishery. Particular attention was devoted to investigating the performances of the fishery with regard to three features identified as major impacts in the literature: rationalization of the fishing fleet, change in fishing strategy in order to maximise the fisher's profit and concentration of fishing rights and activity. On average, the fishery reacted as expected and reached its objective in terms of reconstruction of the biomass, but the overall assessment in terms of resulting profitability is not very conclusive. There is no evidence of decrease of the profitability over the period of the study but...

Contribution to an inventory of the freshwater planarians of Australia and New Zealand (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Dugesiidae), with distribution maps of the species examined Naturalis
Sluys, Ronald; Kawakatsu, Masaharu.
An account is given of 13 species of freshwater planarians from the family Dugesiidae, based on samples from new localities in New Zealand and Australia; these include four newly described and one problematic species. In the case of three species, the material described represents the second series of specimens available since the material used in the original descriptions of these species, as a result of which our understanding of the morphology of the animals can be expanded. In other cases, the new material also contributed to a more detailed understanding of the anatomy of the species. The study concludes with detailed distribution maps for the species examined, including not only the new distributional records described in the paper but also...

An annotated index to names of Odonata used in publications by M. A. Lieftinck Naturalis
Tol, J. van.
An index to all names of Odonata mentioned in publications of Maurits Anne Lieftinck (19041985) is provided. Lieftinck mainly published on the Odonata faunas of the Indo-Australian and Palaearctic regions. He revised many genera, described over 600 species and also examined hundreds of primary types of previously described species. He included with his descriptions and revisions accurate line illustrations and carefully composed lists of synonymies and references. The index to his works is therefore a key to nearly the full literature of Indo-Australian Odonata, as well as to valuable museum collections of, especially Indo-Australian, Odonata.

Calonectria species associated with cutting rot of Eucalyptus Naturalis
Lombard, L.; Zhou, X.D.; Crous, P.W.; Wingfield, B.D.; Wingfield, M.J..
Decline in the productivity of Eucalyptus hybrid cutting production in the Guangdong Province of China is linked to cutting rot associated with several Calonectria spp. The aim of this study was to identify these fungi using morphological and DNA sequence comparisons. Two previously undescribed Calonectria spp., Ca. pseudoreteaudii sp. nov. and Ca. cerciana sp. nov. were identified together with Ca. pauciramosa. Calonectria pseudoreteaudii resides in the Ca. reteaudii complex and Ca. cerciana is closely related to Ca. morganii. Connected to the discovery of Ca. pseudoreteaudii, species in the Ca. reteaudii complex were re-considered and the group is shown to accommodate two cryptic species. These originate from Australia and are described as Ca....
