Automatic controller to water plants Scientia Agricola
Medici,Leonardo Oliveira; Rocha,Hermes Soares da; Carvalho,Daniel Fonseca de; Pimentel,Carlos; Azevedo,Ricardo Antunes.
Despite the massive demand of water for plant irrigation, there are few devices being used in the automation of this process in agriculture. This work evaluates a simple controller to water plants automatically that can be set up with low cost commercial materials, which are large-scale produced. This controller is composed by a ceramic capsule used in common domestic water filters; a plastic tube around 1.5 m long, and a pressostate used in domestic washing machines. The capsule and the pressostate are connected through the tube so that all parts are filled with water. The ceramic capsule is the sensor of the controller and has to be placed into the plant substrate. The pressostate has to be placed below the sensor and the lower it is, the higher is the...

Automatically controlled deficit irrigation of lettuce in “organic potponics” Scientia Agricola
Valença,David da Cunha; Carvalho,Daniel Fonseca de; Reinert,Fernanda; Azevedo,Ricardo Antunes; Pinho,Camila Ferreira de; Medici,Leonardo Oliveira.
ABSTRACT: Concerns with water crisis involve all sectors of society and irrigated agriculture remains the main water consumer. This study evaluated an agricultural production system for lettuce cultivation in greenhouse, “organic potponics”, to economize water and manure use, using a Simplified Irrigation Controller (SIC), based on soil matric potential monitoring. Five irrigation volumes were evaluated in pots with 4.8 L, fertilized with 200 g of vermicompost. One of the volumes was controlled with the SIC. The other volumes represented 130, 80, 60 and 33 % of that controlled by the SIC and all treatments received water at the same time. Shoot fresh weight, head diameter and stomatal conductance (gs) increased linearly with irrigation volumes. For shoot...

Performance and radial distribution profiles of a variable flow rate sprinkler developed for precision irrigation Scientia Agricola
Armindo,Robson André; Botrel,Tarlei Arriel.
Variable rate sprinklers (VRS) have been developed to promote localized water application of irrigated areas. In Precision Irrigation, VRS permits better control of flow adjustment and, at the same time, provides satisfactory radial distribution profiles for various pressures and flow rates are really necessary. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance and radial distribution profiles of a developed VRS which varies the nozzle cross sectional area by moving a pin in or out using a stepper motor. Field tests were performed under different conditions of service pressure, rotation angles imposed on the pin and flow rate which resulted in maximal water throw radiuses ranging from 7.30 to 10.38 m. In the experiments in which the service...

A method of determining cut position of automatic stem removal system for salted wakame CIGR Journal
Yimit, Adiljan; Takagi, Motoki; Hagihara, Yukari; Miyoshi, Tasuku; Hagihara, Yoshihiro.
In the wakame manufacturing procedure, the manual operation process of stem removal is known to hinder the production process. In order to solve this problem, the manufacture aspires to develop an automatic wakame stem removal system. The purpose of this paper is to propose a cut position detection method for the system by picking up the characteristic changes that appear at the cross section of the wakame. In this method, with the utilization of exposure control, two images are captured from the same cross section that is made by a developed device. These images are used in the segmentation of the cross section. The positions where the stem should be cut can then be determined through the examination of the thickness of the cross section. To test the...

On-line analysis of biosignals for the automation of total and specific sleep deprivation in the rat Biol. Res.
VIVALDI,ENNIO A; BASSI,ALEJANDRO; ESTRADA,JORGE; GARRIDO,IGNACIO; DÍAZ,JAVIER; OCAMPO-GARCÉS,ADRIÁN.
A computer-based system that automates sleep studies, including sleep deprivation paradigms, is described. The system allows for total or REM-specific sleep deprivation and is based on a reliable, fast-responding, on-line state detection algorithm linked to a dependable intervention device. Behavioral state detection is achieved by dimensión reduction of short-term EEG power spectrum. Interventions are made by serial outputs to servomotors that move a cage with different patterns and variable intensity. The system can adapt itself to individual characteristics and to changes in recording conditions. Customized protocols can be designed by defining the states or stages to be deprived, including scheduling temporal patterns. A detailed analysis of the...
