Effect of dietary fat level and source on performance and immune system response of turkeys Animal Sciences
Omidi, Shahryar; Mohit, Ardeshir; Hossein-Zadeh, Navid Ghavi.
An experiment was conducted to determine effects of different levels and sources of fats in diets on growth performance, carcass characteristics and immune response of turkeys during four periods (0-21, 22 to 42, 43 to 63 and 64 to 70 days of age). A completely randomized design with five treatments, six replicates and eight B.U.T.6 turkey chickens per replicate was used. Treatments included: Control diet, diet containing 2.5% of soybean oil, diet containing 2.5% fat supplement, diet containing 5% soybean oil, diet containing 5% fat supplement. The results showed that using 5% of soybean oil increased average daily gain of turkeys (89.04 g) throughout the experimental period (0-70 days) compared with the control group (81.11 g; p < 0.05). Treatments...

Beef cattle performance on signal grass pastures deferred and fertilized with nitrogen Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Amorim,P.L.; Fonseca,D.M.; Santos,M.E.R.; Pimentel,R.M.; Rodrigues,J.P.P.; Chizzotti,F.H.M.; Vitor,C.G..
ABSTRACT The effect of four nitrogen levels (0, 40, 80 and 120kg N ha-1), applied before deferment on the beef cattle production and structural variables on Urochloa decumbens (signal grass) were assessed from January to October 2012 and from January to September 2013. A randomized block design with three replicates was adopted, in an arrangement of repeated measures in time (grazing period). An interaction effect between nitrogen level and grazing period was observed on extended-plant height and herbage mass. As the nitrogen levels were increased, extended-plant height, herbage mass, total herbage allowance, and efficiency of conversion of fertilizer into herbage were increased. Throughout the grazing period, pasture height, extended-plant height,...

Probability of pregnancy in beef heifers Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Faria,D.P.; Costa,M. D. da; Raidan,F. S. S.; Ruas,J. R. M.; Júnior,V. R. R.; Toral,F. L. B.; Aspiazú,I..
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of initial weight, initial age, average daily gain in initial weight, average daily gain in total weight and genetic group on the probability of pregnancy in primiparous females of the Nellore, 1/2 Simmental + 1/2 Nellore, and 3/4 Nellore + 1/4 Simmental genetic groups. Data were collected from the livestock file of the Farpal Farm, located in the municipality of Jaíba, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The pregnancy diagnosis results (success = 1 and failure = 0) were used to determine the probability of pregnancy that was modeled using logistic regression by the Proc Logistic procedure available on SAS (Statistical..., 2004) software, from the regressor variables initial weight, average daily gain in initial weight,...

Intake, digestibility and performance of lambs fed with diets containing cassava peels Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Guimarães,Gilmara Santos; Silva,Fabiano Ferreira da; Silva,Luciano Lemos da; Galvão,Luísa Miranda Girardi; Santos,Lenon Machado dos; Alencar,Alfredo Machado.
Sheep farming is designated to economic exploitation, and dry matter intake is the most important factor that influences the performance of animal, thus seeking alternative foods. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of inclusion levels of cassava peel on intake, digestibility and performance of feedlot lambs. We used 32 crossbred lambs Santa Inês uncastrated, mean body weight of 21 ± 1.5 kg. Treatments were arranged in a randomized design to animals, with inclusion levels of cassava peel (0, 10, 20, 30%) in the diet dry matter and forage cassava leaf hay. During 70 days, there have been weighing the food provided, leftovers, and animals, and feces collection. The intake of dry matter (DMI), organic matter (OMI), crude protein (CPI), ether extract...

Herbage intake and animal performance of cattle grazing dwarf elaphant grass with two access times to a forage peanut area Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Liz,Diego Melo de; Ribeiro Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes; Andrade,Ederson Americo de; Nardi,Camila Zardo de; Miguel,Marcolino Frederico; Almeida,Edison Xavier.
Relatively short grazing periods in a pure legume pasture can be an alternative for increasing animal performance in medium-quality tropical pastures. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the herbage intake and animal performance of steers grazing dwarf elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum. cv. BRS Kurumi) with two access times [2 h (07:00 - 9:00) and 6 h (07:00 - 13:00)] to an area of forage peanut (Arachis pintoi cv. Amarillo). Twelve steers (219 ± 28.8 kg LW) were divided into four groups and assessed during three consecutive grazing cycles, from January to March 2013. The crude protein and neutral detergent fiber contents were 158 and 577 g/kg dry matter (DM) for dwarf elephant grass and 209 and 435 g/kg DM for forage peanut, respectively. The...
