In this work we studied some ecological factors and the floral composition of phytoplankton (micro plankton) during the 1953-1954 period. We measured successively: the temperature, the pH, the alkaline, the chlorine, the dissolved oxygen, the concentration of phosphates and nitrates. The water of the Ostend port passes the scale a-mesohaline to polyhaline. The sampling of the phytoplankton has been worked out one time or several times in a month. The Bacillariophyceae play an important role, the Dinophyceae are relatively rare, as the Chryosophyceae, and the Chlorophyceae are meeting during the whole year, with the exception of January, February and April, in little quantities, except for November. Belgium became officialy a federal state in 1993. The federal competence was reshuffeled and parts of it attributed to the Communities and Regions. Since the latter became competent in economic matters, it is mostly the redistribution of powers between the federal and regional level which is at order in this study. At first sight, a rather simple rule of thumb can be applied. All waters located on the land-side of the baseline, i.e. the low-water line in Belgium, belong to the competence of the Regions. The distribution of heavy minerals in Middle to Upper Eocene deposits of western Belgium is discussed with reference to ternary diagrams based on density (<3.4; 3.4-4.2; >4.2) and mineralogical composition (ubiquist, parametamorphic and garnet-epidote-amphibole-pyroxene groups). A corresponding diamond diagram is used to interpret the transport mode and the energy of the sedimentary environment.The Aalter Formation (middle Eocene), which was deposited in a quiet to turbulent setting, contains high amounts of ubiquists, parametamorphic minerals and garnets, with a minor epidote and amphibole content. From October to April the growth of spat of <i>Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas</i> and <i>Venerupis semidecussata</i> in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level. The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability. |

The food chain of plankton at the Sluice-Dock is reduced to the simple system "producers-primary consumers". The role of zooplankton is most important only for a short time, namely in May, when it restricts the development of phytoplankton by its grazing activity, and becomes the main source of nutrients due to its excretory activity. After the disappearance of most of the zooplankton biomasses, caused by a mortality that is not due to predation, the phytoplankton can again develop. At other times of the year, the zooplankton activities such as production, grazing, excretion, and respiration only represent 1% of the total plankton activity. |

An extensive program of tracer experiments was carried out for calculating sediment transport in the vicinity of the Port of Zeebrugge where extension operations are in progress. Offshore radioactive bottom tracers were used for studying the sand transport along the beaches where erosion problems exist. On the beach itself fluorescent tracers were used. For the evaluation of the silting-up rate of the access channels to the harbour a series of radioactive bottom and suspension tracers were tracked <i>in situ</i>. For determining the efficiency of future dumping grounds a combination of bottom tracers and suspension tracers was used. In total, 18 experiments with radioactive tracers were carried out and 9 with fluorescent ones. |

To elucidate vertical (= from high to low water mark) macroinfaunal community patterns on little-studied Belgian dissipative sandy beaches, macroinfauna was sampled at eight stations along a seaward transect at De Panne. Mean sand particle size was 196 µm, and the beach slope was ca. 1 : 90. Nineteen species were collected (excluding non-quantitatively sampled species), nine of which were polychaetes and eight were crustaceans. Total macroinfaunal abundance per station ranged from 103 to 585 ind./ m². Polychaetes and crustaceans were numerically dominant, comprising more than 98% of total numbers.
