Intra- and inter-annual variations in Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) communities in subtropical streams Rev. Bras. Zool.
Nava,Diane; Restello,Rozane M.; Hepp,Luiz U..
The structure and composition of stream benthic communities are strongly influenced by spatial and temporal factors. This study evaluated the intra and inter-annual variations in Chironomidae communities in subtropical streams. The organisms were sampled from 10 small-order streams during the summer and winter of 2010-2012. The number of chironomid specimens sampled was 7,568, distributed in 49 genera. Chironomid abundance and richness varied intra and inter-annually and community composition varied intra-annually (2010 and 2011). Water temperature, total organic carbon, nitrogen, and rainfall were correlated with chironomid community composition. The intra-annual variation of the community was dependent on climatic variations (temperature and rainfall)...

Metrics derived from fish assemblages as indicators of environmental degradation in Cerrado streams Rev. Bras. Zool.
Ávila,Milton P.; Carvalho,Rafaela Neves; Casatti,Lilian; Simião-Ferreira,Juliana; Morais,Lorrane Faria de; Teresa,Fabrício B..
ABSTRACT The development of effective monitoring tools depends on finding sensitive metrics that are capable of detecting the most important environmental impacts at a given region. We assessed if metrics derived from stream fish assemblages reflect physical habitat degradation and changes in land cover. We sampled the ichthyofauna and environmental characteristics of 16 stream sites of first and second order in the Upper Tocantins River basin. The streams were classified according to their environmental characteristics into reference (n = 5), intermediate (n = 4), and impacted (n = 7). A total of 4,079 individuals in five orders, 12 families, and 30 species were collected. Of the 20 metrics tested, eight were non-collinear and were tested for their...

Morphology and 18S rDNA gene sequence of Spirostomum minus and Spirostomum teres (Ciliophora: Heterotrichea) from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Fernandes,Noemi M.; Silva Neto,Inácio D. da.
Species of Spirostomum Ehrenberg, 1838 are widely used as model organisms in ecological studies of environmental impacts and symbioses between ciliates and human pathogenic bacteria. However, the taxonomy of this genus is confused by the superficiality of the morphological descriptions of its included species, and the use of only a few characters for their differentiation. The present study provides details of total infraciliature, nuclear apparatus, morphometric data and 18S rDNA gene sequences of Spirostomum teres Claparède & Lachmann, 1858 and Spirostomum minus Roux, 1901, isolated from a sewage treatment plant and a freshwater lake in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, respectively. For the morphological descriptions of S. teres and S. minus,...

The agricultural impact of pesticides on Physalaemus cuvieri tadpoles (Amphibia: Anura) ascertained by comet assay Rev. Bras. Zool.
Gonçalves,Macks W.; Gambale,Priscilla G.; Godoy,Fernanda R.; Alves,Alessandro Arruda; Rezende,Pedro H. de Almeida; Cruz,Aparecido D. da; Maciel,Natan M.; Nomura,Fausto; Bastos,Rogério P.; Marco-Jr,Paulo de; Silva,Daniela de M..
ABSTRACT Amphibians inhabiting agricultural areas are constantly exposed to large amounts of chemicals, which reach the aquatic environment during the rainy season through runoff, drainage, and leaching. We performed a comet assay on the erythrocytes of tadpoles found in the surroundings of agricultural fields (soybean and corn crops), where there is an intense release of several kinds of pesticides in different quantities. We aimed to detect differences in the genotoxic parameters between populations collected from soybeans and cornfields, and between them and tadpoles sampled from non-agricultural areas (control group). Tadpoles collected from ponds located at soybean fields had significantly more DNA damage, followed by tadpoles collected from...

Atmosphere-ocean interactions are particularly strong along the Chile-Peru coast and largely account for the extreme aridity of the Atacama Desert. Near the center of the driest part of this coastal desert, we found that the embayment Bahía Mejillones constitutes an unusually favorable setting for the formation and subsequent preservation of a sedimentary record of the successive oceanographic conditions of the last few thousand years. This work deals with relative abundance of various bio-indicators, including fish scales, foraminifers and phytoplankton, with a centimetre-scale resolution, in several gravity cores taken from 80 to 120 m depth, in a low-oxygen environment. We use this information to document ocean-climate changes at decadal to centennial...

Benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages structure in two headwater streams, south-eastern Brazil Zoologia
Tupinambás,Taynan H.; Callisto,Marcos; Santos,Gilmar B..
From December 2003 to September 2004, benthic macroinvertebrates (BM), fishes, water and sediment were collected quarterly at six stations in two streams of the upper São Francisco River basin, south-eastern Brazil. We evaluated the ecological conditions, habitat diversity, water quality, composition and structure of BM communities, as well as the food habits of the local fish fauna. By applying a protocol for rapid characterization of ecological conditions and habitat diversity, three of the sampled localities were classified as "pristine" while the others stations were considered "altered". A well oxygenated water with near neutral pH and low electric conductivity (< 0.01 mS/cm) and nutrient concentrations (< 0.08 mg/l total P and < 0.90 mg/l...

Evidence of mutagenic and lethal effects of herbicides on Amazonian frogs Acta Amazonica
FERRANTE,Lucas; FEARNSIDE,Philip M..
ABSTRACT Amphibians are excellent bioindicators because they are sensitive to chemical pollution and can indicate ecosystem changes due to the presence of or exposure to chemical compounds. Here we report evidence of the impact of herbicides, including glyphosate, on amphibians in a locality in the central Brazilian Amazon and compare it with data from other biomes in Brazil. We observed malformations in three species of Leptodactylus and local extinctions of Scinax ruber and Rhinella marina from reproductive sites close to an area where herbicides had been applied. The observations in the Amazon are similar to reports from Brazil’s Atlantic forest on morphological anomalies and mortality in amphibians exposed to herbicides. We warn of the threat of...

LEAF-CUTTING ANTS Acromyrmex niger SMITH, 1858(HYMENOPTERA; FORMICIDAE) USED AS BIOINDICATORS OF AGROTOXICS RESIDUES Acta biol.Colomb.
BELIZÁRIO CANTAGALLI,LIRIANA; ALVES LOPES,DENISE; PAZ BARATEIRO STUCHI,ANA LÚCIA; COLLA RUVOLO-TAKASUSUKI,MARIA CLAUDIA.
Despite the condition of leaf-cutting ant pests in agroecosystems, it is undeniable the benefits they can bring in certain situations or environments. The leaf-cutting ants of the genus Acromyrmex attack mainly leaves of vegetables and fruit trees exposing not only to the agrochemicals used for their control as well as to those used for the control of other pests. Due to the bioindicator potential of environmental quality of the ants and their frequent exposure to agrochemicals such as organophosphates, neonicotinoids and growth regulators insecticide used for pest control, it is necessary to study the sublethal effects that these pesticides may cause. The electrophoresis technique was used to study the activity of esterase isozymes involved in the...
