Due to the unsuitability of the north brittany coastal fishing grounds for trawling, the fishing activity of the harbours of this coast has been oriented towards the catch of invertebrates and peculiarly the large crustaceans. After, in the beginning of the XIX century, looking for lobster and spiny lobster, fishing has been, since the seventies, centered on the catch of the edible crab (Cancer Pagurus) and of the spider crab (Maia squinado). The first part of this document introduces the context of the exploitation and the concerned fleets. The second part treats of the biological parameters of the edible crab: growth, reproduction, migration and pathologies. The third part, devoted to the exploitation and the monitoring of the edible crab stock, is an... |

In the following pages sorne account is given of 20 species of Nemerteans from the Eastern Indian Ocean. In addition to those collected by the Percy Sladen Expedition, we bave been able to examine a collection made by Mr. Oyril Crossland at and near Zanzibar, and also a few procured by Professor Herdman from Ceylon. To these two gentlemen we desire to express our thanks. Other specimens reached us besides those described below, but owing to their imperfect condition or to their unsatisfactory preservation we have not included them in our account. Contrary to the situation in Europe, Réunion Island is the only French department whose fishing has increased considerably for five years, as far as artisanal fishing linked to DCPs (Fish Concentration Plans), but also semi-industrial longline fishing and industrial fishing in southern oceans are concerned. Two capital events contribute to the quick development of tuna fishing and provide Reunion Island with access to its pelagic resources. The setting up in 1988 of the first DCPs by the French Research institute for the exploitation of the sea (Ifremer) resulted in a real upheaval of artisanal fishery and relaunched a sector which had been slowing down since 1980. In 1991, witnessing the success of Asian longline boats unloading on Reunion Island, a local... |

Sheltered by the Isle of Oléron, benefiting from the supply of fresh water from two rivers, the Charente and the Seudre, the Marennes-Oléron basin enjoys, in Charente-Maritime, a privileged topographical situation. Oyster farming, one of the first forms of marine aquafarming, represents the central business activity of this shoreline of the Charente, whose originality is to own more than 90% of the oyster pits currently listed in France. This peculiarity has been described by several authors: Moreau (1970), Gras (1976), Grelon (1978) and Marteil (1979). |

This report compiles 17 short and illustrated syntheses concerning the natural strategies of reproduction and the artificial control of the reproductive process for the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, the japanese oyster, Crassostrea gigas, the mussels, Mytilus edulis and My ti/us galloprovincialis, the scallop, Pecten maximus. An additional syntheses is presented, as a comparison within molluscs, which are the main research topics at IFREMER concerning the artificial control of the reproductive processes in Marine Fish. Three main subjects are documented : 1. the ecophysiology of the natural period of reproduction in the wild, 2. the methods developed in the hatcheries for the artificial control of the reproductive periods, the gametes collection and the... |

Otiorhynchus apenninus, a new weevil for the Netherlands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Otiorhynchus apenninus (= O. salicicola) is reported for the first time from the Netherlands. The species was collected in a garden at Hoofddorp (Noord-Holland), Rijswijk (Zuid-Holland) and in and around a garden at Heemstede (Noord-Holland). The species appeared to be present at the locality at Heemstede for several successive years, despite an attempt to eradicate it. We therefore conclude that O. apenninus must be considered as established in the Netherlands. Some data are presented on the European distribution and host plants of the species. Illustrations of the male and female genitalia are provided. |

Distribution and ecology of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli in the Netherlands (Diptera: Chironomidae) This paper adresses the ecology, biology and distribution of the larvae of the chironomid Glyptotendipes ospeli Contreras-Lichtenberg, 1999. No information is available on the ecology and biology of the adults. Glyptotendipes ospeli was described in 1999 after larvae collected in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) had been reared to adults. There is only one record from outside the Netherlands: a larva collected in Pripyat River (Belarus). In the Netherlands, larvae of this species have so far been recorded on 36 localities. Locally it can be rather common. Most records originate from standing, medium-sized, shallow waters in cities, e.g. ponds in city... |
