Real-time ultrasound to predict rabbit carcass composition and volume of longissimus dorsi muscle R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Severiano José Cruz da Rocha e; Jorge,André Mendes; Mourão,José Luís Teixeira de Abreu Medeiros; Guedes,Cristina Vitória de Miranda; Pinheiro,Victor Manuel Carvalho.
Real-time ultrasonography (RTU) was used to measure the longissimus dorsi muscle (LM) volume in vivo and to predict the carcass composition of rabbits. For this, 63 New Zealand White × Californian rabbits with 2093±63 g live weight were used. Animals were scanned between the 6th and 7th lumbar vertebrae using an RTU equipment with a 7.5 MHz probe. Measurements of LM volume were obtianed both in vivo and on carcass. Regression equations were used for the prediction of carcass composition and LM volume using the LM volume measured obtained with RTU (LMVU) as independent variable. Carcass meat, bone and total dissectible fat weights represented 780, 164 and 56 g/kg of the reference carcass weight, respectively. Regression equations showed a strong...

Use of radiographic examinations in the diagnosis of Pulmonary Hypertrophic Osteopathy (OHP): report on three cases in dogs MV&Z
Candeias, Cíntia Zamponi Costa; da Silva, Débora Prado; Camargo, Ricardo Fuso; Alves, Jefferson Douglas Soares.
Pulmonary Hypertrophic Osteopathy (OHP) is a condition characterized by a bone neoformation resulting from periosteal response in long bones and extremities. It is secondary to intrathoracic diseases such as primary or metastatic tumors; pyelo-granulomatous diseases and primary malignancies in the pelvic organs. It may affect several species, and has no racial predisposition or biotype relation, although it’s commonly found in elder animals. The usual clinical signs are: increased temperature and edema in the affected limbs, reluctance to move and limping. However, some signs can be related to the primary disease. The pathophysiology is not yet fully understood, but there are different theories that explain the disease. This paper reports three cases seen...

Methods for evaluation of bone mineralization in foals MV&Z
Kerber, Claudia Ehlers.
Some of the main equine diseases are related to the musculoskeletal system, mainly during the bone developing in young animals. In São Paulo state, Brazil, the use of tropical grasses for grazing, the seasons and a general tendency to concentrate a large number of horses in small areas, frequently results on bone diseases, sometimes subtle, which depreciate the economic value of the horses and decrease the chance of a maximum performance. An early diagnosis of mineral imbalance play an important role once the bone diseases can be reversible when corrected on time. The author presents a review of physiology and pathophysiology of the bone. Also describe the methods available for diagnostic and suggest the phosphorus clearance as a sensitive, early, low cost...

The peculiarities of the masticator muscles in rodents Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Spataru,C.; Spataru,M.; Vulpe,V.; Lazar,M..
Comparative research concerning masticatory musculature in squirrel, muskrat and rabbit, take into account the emphasizing and morphofunctional interpretation of the osteomuscular particularities involved in the prehension and mastication processes. The development of the coronoid process on the muskrat and squirrel demonstrates the growing of the force when raising the mandible by increasing the action force attached to the temporal muscle, with insertion on the coronoid process. In comparison with that, in the case of rabbits, both the coronoid process and the temporal muscle are reduced. From a philogenetic point of view, it has been found that the species that have the articular condyle lowered at or under the level of the dental tables (carnivores)...

Comparison of subcutaneous inflammatory response to commercial and engineered zinc hydroxyapatite implants in rabbits Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Muñoz,L.C.; Cardona.-Ramirez,S.; Silva,R.F..
ABSTRACT Hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used as a biomaterial for bone repair and metallic prostheses coating. The main limitations of the current commercial synthetic hydroxyapatite compounds include high cost and decreased availability, especially for veterinary medicine purposes. Additionally, it is thought that HA biocompatibility and bioactivity could be enhanced by the addition of metal compounds. The objective of this work was to compare the subcutaneous tissue response of commercial and engineered hydroxyapatite obtained from the bovine femur diaphysis mixed with different concentrations of hexa-hydrated Zinc Nitrate in rabbits. Twenty-Five New Zealand female rabbits were used. Five treatments were done according to HA composition (commercial HA, no...

Tissue mRNA expression in rat of newly described matrix metalloproteinases Biol. Res.
BERNAL,FABIÁN; HARTUNG,HANS-PETER; KIESEIER,BERND C.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) comprise a large group of endoproteinases that degrade all protein components of the extracellular matrix. Functionally, MMPs contribute to several different physiological as well as pathological conditions. The number of newly described MMPs has increased in recent years, although current knowledge about their expression pattern in various tissues remains incomplete. Here we analyzed the relative mRNA expression of the most recently described MMPs _ MT5-MMP (MMP-24), MT6-MMP (MMP-25), MMP-27 and epilysin (MMP-28) _ in a broad selection of rat tissues using real time-PCR. MMP-24 mRNA was found to be widely expressed with predominance in the central nervous system. MMP-25 mRNA, in contrast, exhibited peak expression levels...

Ultrasound method applied to characterize healthy femoral diaphysis of Wistar rats in vivo BJMBR
Fontes-Pereira,A.; Matusin,D.P.; Rosa,P.; Schanaider,A.; von Krüger,M.A.; Pereira,W.C.A..
A simple experimental protocol applying a quantitative ultrasound (QUS) pulse-echo technique was used to measure the acoustic parameters of healthy femoral diaphyses of Wistar rats in vivo. Five quantitative parameters [apparent integrated backscatter (AIB), frequency slope of apparent backscatter (FSAB), time slope of apparent backscatter (TSAB), integrated reflection coefficient (IRC), and frequency slope of integrated reflection (FSIR)] were calculated using the echoes from cortical and trabecular bone in the femurs of 14 Wistar rats. Signal acquisition was performed three times in each rat, with the ultrasound signal acquired along the femur's central region from three positions 1 mm apart from each other. The parameters estimated for the three...
