Institutional perspectives of land reclamation operations in Punjab: A case study of the Lower Chenab Canal (East) Circle Area AgEcon
Bandaragoda, Don Jayatissa; Rehman, Saeed ur.
The Directorate of Land Reclamation (DLR), which was set up in 1945, is a special unit of Punjab's Irrigation and Power Department for undertaking research and field operations to combat the problem of salinity. Approaching the end of five decades of existence, the directorate is yet to demonstrate its effectiveness in its assigned task; its inability to fully cope with the conditions of a fast changing irrigation environment makes this rather an illusive goal. In the selection of lands for reclamation, the Directorate is heavily dependent on the visual salinity survey (Thur Girdawari) carried out every year by the Irrigation Department's field staff. This visual survey appears to be a quick and cost-effective method of assessing surface salinity, but...

Enhancing Student Learning Experiences and Providing Value to the Agribusiness Industry by Building the Industry-Institution Interface AgEcon
Foltz, John C.; Devadoss, Stephen.
This paper addresses agribusiness industry-institution interfaces, research-education linkages, and improving agribusiness education with opportunities such as agricultural students’ internships with agribusiness companies, conducting applied research, and finding opportunities for agribusiness educational seminars conducted by universities. The rationale for agribusiness internships is discussed, and agribusiness internship structure and planning is outlined. The potential benefits of a Departmental Advisory Board are listed, along with suggestions for implementing such a group. Applied agribusiness research opportunities including case studies and extension, outreach, or trade publications are highlighted, and examples of this type of work are discussed....

Support Scheme of Food Processing Firms: A Driving Force for Rural Development? AgEcon
Trefflich, Annette; Uetrecht, Inge; Efken, Josef; Schafer, Martin; Steinbauer, Christina; Wendt, Heinz.
The agri-food sector was given remarkable amounts of funding by all German federal states in the framework of the Measure g ‘Improving Processing and Marketing of Agricultural Products’ within the rural development programs. Based on literature and data we obtained by evaluating this program we identified some indicators representative for illustration of sustainable development, Apart from project data we used the official statistics and the method of case studies. Via selected indicators we received some signs of sustainable development in enterprises of the agri-food industry that also influence the development of rural area. Some statements are restricted because net effects can not be determined. The need for subsidies is discussed as well as...

Balancing irrigation and hydropower: Case study from Southern Sri Lanka AgEcon
Molle, Francois; Jayakody, Priyantha; Ariyaratne, Badugodahewa Ranjith; Somatilake, H.S..
This report analyzes a case from southern Sri Lanka, where the Samanalawewa dam and the Kaltota Irrigation Scheme (KIS) compete for the water of the Walawe river. At the catchment level, it is shown that dam releases are well attuned to the needs of KIS and to the occurrences of natural runoff, and that little of the dam water is "lost" to the river.

Community-driven development and scaling-up of microfinance services: case studies from Nepal and India AgEcon
Sharma, Manohar P..
This case study examines the scaling-up experiences of two microfinance institutions: the Nirdhan Utthan Bank Limited (NUBL) in Nepal and the Self-Help Group (SHG)-Bank linkage program of the National Agricultural Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in India. Both NUBL and NABARD groups use self-regulation (peer selection, peer monitoring, and peer enforcement of contracts) as key to gaining access to services not otherwise available to them. There are two community-based drivers. First, loan products are closely driven by client preferences, as evidenced by strong demand to join the program, high repayment rates, and very low dropout rates. Second, the process of organizing clients into groups has a significant empowering effect, providing...

Farmer Entrepreneurship in New Zealand - Some Observations from Case Studies AgEcon
Gow, Neil G..
1984 was a watershed in New Zealand agriculture which led to a flowering of entrepreneurial activity by some New Zealand farmers. A change of government and a national economic crisis lead to a complete and drastic review and subsequent restructuring of the agricultural sector. Farmers were forced to recognize that they could no longer rely on government support but had to meet the market. This paper reflects on research carried out at Lincoln University that has focused on case histories of some successful farmer entrepreneurs who grew out of this era. It attempts to link the case studies involved to concepts enunciated in the academic literature, especially those of performance and opportunity gaps, strategic intent, marketing strategies and supply chain...

Groundwater policy: issues and alternatives in India AgEcon
Moench, Marcus.
This paper reviews policy-related issues discussed in recent conferences that will affect groundwater development and management efforts in South Asia. Emphasis is given to policy issues surrounding emerging groundwater depletion and quality concerns, and issues concerning the equitable development of groundwater for poverty alleviation. The paper outlines the range of services that depend on groundwater resources and outlines the range of services that depend on groundwater resources to provide these services, and the complications stemming from the fragmented approach taken to water management throughout the region. A range of responses dealing with the management of the physical system is identified. In conclusion , the paper discusses institutional...

Charging for irrigation water: The issues and options, with a case study from Iran AgEcon
Perry, Christopher J..
Inadequate funding for maintenance of irrigation works and emerging shortages of water are prevalent. The use of water charges to generate resources for maintenance and to reduce demand is widely advocated. Examples from other utilities, and from the domestic/industrial sectors of water supply suggest the approach could be effective. In developing countries, the facilities required for measured and controlled delivery of irrigation are rarely in place, and would require a massive investment in physical, legal and administrative infrastructure. To be effective in curtailing demand, the marginal price of water must be significant. The price levels required to cover operation and maintenance (O&M) costs are too low to have a substantial impact on demand,...
