Biologia reprodutiva de Astyanax scabripinnis paranae (Eigenmann) (Ostheichthyes, Characidae), do ribeirão das Marrecas, bacia do rio Tibagi, Paraná Zoologia
Veregue,Angela Maria Louzada; Orsi,Mário Luís.
Some aspects of the reproductive cycle of female "lambari", Astyanax scabripinnis paranae (Eigenmann, 1927) were studied. The specimens were collected in intervals of fifteen days, from September 1979, until November 1980, in the Marrecas creek (Irerê and Paiquerê districts), Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The maturity scale was characterized in five stages: immature, maturation, spawning, spent, and resting, which was established by the gonad-somatic relation and the ovary morphology and microscopic aspects. The maturation curve and distribution of maturity stages show that the period of reproduction is very long; spawning extended from July to March. The gonad cycle is related to seasons: maturation occurs chiefly in the winter months, spawning specimens are...

Feeding ecology of Serrapinnus notomelas (Characiformes: Cheirodontinae) in small forest streams in the Machado River basin, Rondônia, Brazil Acta Amazonica
COSTA,Igor David da; ROCHA,Vanessa Martins da.
ABSTRACT Studies on the trophic structure of fish give information on species autoecology and their role in the ecosystem. The aims of this study were to characterize the diet of Serrapinnus notomelas in small streams of the River Machado basin and to assess the effect of rainfall seasonality. Fish were collected bimonthly from July 2013 to May 2014 with seine nets and hand nets. The length of each specimen was measured to identify category classes. There were also measured the fullness index and volume of each ingested item, and these data were combined to obtain an alimentary index. We used ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis to test for differences between length classes and fullness index, Chi-squared tests to detect seasonal differences in origin of food items...

Stream fish from recently deforested basins in the Meridional Amazon, Mato Grosso, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Casatti,Lilian; Brejão,Gabriel Lourenço; Carvalho,Fernando Rogério; Silva,Hugmar Pains da; Pérez-Mayorga,María Angélica; Manzotti,Angelo Rodrigo; Zeni,Jaquelini de Oliveira; Ramires,Bruno Martins Santos; Langeani,Francisco.
Abstract: The replacement of tropical forests to production systems is one of the leading causes of riverine ecosystem alterations. However, current assemblages’ composition may also result from the time since these transformations have begun. Therefore, the knowledge of diversified historical scenarios can facilitate the accomplishment of actions that involve the aquatic environments recovery. In this study, an inventory of stream fish was carried out in basins whose deforestation was intensified in the last 20 years, to compose a baseline for ecological and taxonomic studies. The habitat, physical and chemical variables, and the fish assemblages from 60 streams in the northwest region of the state of Mato Grosso, in the Aripuanã and Juruena river basins,...

Fishes community composition and patterns of species distribution in Neotropical streams Biota Neotropica
Cavalheiro,Laísa Wociechoski; Fialho,Clarice Bernhardt.
Abstract: The ichthyofauna of streams in the Neotropical region is not yet fully known. This study aims to investigate the ichthyofauna composition of six streams of the Ijuí River sub-basin, Rio Grande do Sul State, inserted in the Uruguay River basin, as to contribute to the knowledge of fishes species richness and distribution in the south of Brazil. Sampling was carried out between July 2015 and May 2016, bimonthly, using the technique of electric fishing to collect the fishes. Spatial variations (per sampled stream) in the ichthyofauna composition were tested with a permutational multivariate analysis of variance. In total, we collected 5,029 individuals from 55 species, 13 families and five orders. From these species, 17 are endemic to the Uruguay...

Nuclear-follower foraging associations among Characiformes fishes and Potamotrygonidae rays in clean waters environments of Teles Pires and Xingu rivers basins, Midwest Brazil Biota Neotropica
Garrone Neto,Domingos; Carvalho,Lucélia Nobre.
During under and overwater observations were recorded nuclear-follower foraging associations among three species of characiform fishes - Chalceus epakros, Hemiodus semitaeniatus and Hemiodus unimaculatus - and a freshwater stingray species - Potamotrygon orbignyi - in the Teles Pires and Xingu rivers basins, Midwest Brazil. The teleost fishes were observed closely following the stingrays during the behavior of stirring the substrate to uncover invertebrates, which cause discrete sediment clouds. Apparently this sediment perturbation attracts the fishes that approached the foraging stingrays to feed on small preys and other food types exposed this way. This is a typical example of a commensal relationship in which one participant is benefited while the...

Population structure of two Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 (Teleostei, Characidae) species from upper Paraguaçu river BABT
Santos,Alexandre Clistenes de Alcântara; Novaes,José Luís Costa.
The fishes of the family Characidae are among the main species of fresh water fishes in South America. In this work, some aspects of the population structure of two Astyanax species were assessed. The fishes were caught in Santo Antônio and São José rivers, in the Paraguaçu basin, by standardized monthly samplings adapted to the microhabitats. Astyanax sp. b (São José river) presented larger size than Astyanax sp. a (Santo Antônio river). The length-weight relationship showed positive allometric growth for Astyanax sp. a, and negative for Astyanax sp. b. Both the species showed a long reproductive period, with higher activities in dry period.

Feeding of Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Characidae): a post impoundment studies on Itaipu reservoir, upper Paraná River, PR BABT
Hahn,Norma Segatti; Delariva,Rosilene Luciana; Loureiro,Valdirene Esgarbosa.
With objective to know feeding spectrum of Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Reinhardt, 1874), a middle size predator in different places of influence area of Itaipu reservoir, stomach contents were analyzed. Samples were collected from March 1984 to February 1989 from Itaipu Reservoir and its adjacent areas. Its fed mainly on fishes, but it was an opportunistic (consumed 17 species of prey). Despite of the wide feeding spectrum, few preys were dominant in the diet, according to the different habitats sampled. As a result, it significant spatial differences in the diet was observed. Was observed through "Detrented Correspondence Analysis" (DCA) these were divided into three groups in relation with diet: preys from upstream, with higher scores; preys from the...

Effectiveness of estradiol valerate on sex reversion in Astyanax altiparanae (Characiformes, Characidae) BABT
Bem,Jaqueline Cristina de; Fontanetti,Carmem Silvia; Senhorini,José Augusto; Parise-Maltempi,Patricia Pasquali.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of estradiol valerate in an attempt to feminize the male Astyanax altiparanae. One thousand newly-hatched larvae were randomly distributed in four incubators. During a period of 30 days, estradiol valerate was administered in different dosages (20, 40, and 80 mg/kg of diet); the control group did not receive hormone in the diet. After 161 days of hatching, biometry was performed on 50 fishes per treatment group, and the gonads were analyzed. The hormone treatments were effective in feminizing A. altiparanae, achieving 70-76% of the desired sex, while the control treatment had 44% females. The hormone did not affect the growth of fish.

Occurrence of intersexuality in " Lambaris" , Astyanax scabripinnis (Jenyns, 1842), small characids from the Brazilian streams BABT
Sá,Maria de Fátima Pereira de; Fragoso-Moura,Evelise Nunes; Fenerich-Verani,Nelsy; Ferro,Dagmar Aparecida de Marco.
During studies carried out with a small characid (Astyanax scabripinnis), from the Brazilian streams located in Cerrado biome, some gonads of fishes exhibited sparse oocytes in perinucleolar stage embedded in normally developing testicular tissues. Another pattern of gonad intersex with vitellogenic oocytes and mature lobules was observed in the gonads of fishes collected from a reservoir supplied by the Atlantic Forest stream. These gonads in different stages of maturation were examined histologically. The results revealed the patterns occurring in fishes of the same species, from four different populations.
