Nitrogen sediment fluxes in an upwelling system off central Chile (Concepción Bay and adjacent shelf) during the 1997-1998 El Niño RChHN
MUÑOZ,PRAXEDES; SALAMANCA,MARCO A; NEIRA,CARLOS; SELLANES,JAVIER.
Two stations representing coastal and shelf environments (bay of Concepción and adjacent shelf, respectively) were sampled in order to assess benthic nitrogen fluxes. During the study period anomalously high oxygen bottom waters conditions were observed, coinciding with the 1997-1998 El Niño event. From both sites, intact sediment cores were collected for incubation experiments to directly estimate total ammonium fluxes. Pore-water chemistry was also assessed to estimate diffusive fluxes of nitrogen compounds (NH4+, NO3- and NO2-). The NH4+ flux from incubation experiments ranged from 0.55 to 2.18 mmol m-2 day-1 in the inner bay and from 1.84 to 2.14 mmol m-2 day-1 on the shelf. NO3- diffusive fluxes to the sediments were observed in the bay in March (-17...

Revisiting chlorophyll data along the coast in north-central Chile, considering multiscale environmental variability RChHN
MONTECINO,VIVIAN; PAREDES,M. ALEJANDRA; PAOLINI,PEDRO; RUTLLANT,JOSÉ.
Phytoplankton abundance in the surface mixed layer of the coastal ocean responds to environmental changes at various time scales. Here the "warm", "cold" and "neutral" phases of "three environmental cycles" have been jointly considered to assess chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) biomass variability for both the active and relaxed phases of the local, wind-driven coastal upwelling: (i) the interannual ENSO cycle (ii) the annual (seasonal) cycle and (iii) the intraseasonal cycle associated with equatorially-sourced, ocean trapped-waves along the coast in northern Chile. The main goal of this study is to quantitatively assess the variability of the depth- integrated Chl-a biomass in the euphotic zone (¾Chl-a) in terms of an overall "environmental condition" over a 50 km...

Hanging culture of the winged pearl oyster Pteria colymbus (Röding), in different hydrographic conditions and culture methods Boletín de Investigaciones
Revilla,Jormil; Peñuela-Jiménez,José H.; Márquez,Adrián; Lodeiro,César; Saucedo,Pedro; Freites,Luis.
ABSTRACT The performance of the winged pearl oyster Pteria colymbus juveniles under suspended culture conditions was evaluate, including five culture methods and two seasons: upwelling and non-upwelling. Culture methods comprised enclosures confining the oysters: BTBC, BBO and BTO; and two other unconfined-oyster: OFOB and FNS. The initial shell height of the oysters ranged between 31-35 mm in both seasons. The increase in shell size and dry mass of soft tissues showed significant differences between seasons. Greatest growth occurred with the OFOB and FNS unconfined methods. The ANOVA II analysis showed significant differences between the variables obtained in both stations and culture methods. Principal Component Analysis showed that the interactions...
