The Brazilian organic market has been growing year by year, and it is important for the country because its production system preserves the environment, besides creating employments and income for rural workers. For this, it is necessary that these producers define ways of competing in the market, focusing on aspects that really add value to the clients. The objective of this research was to investigate, based on the rural producer’s perceptions, factors which affect the competition in the production of organic foodstuffs in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This study can be classified as an applied research study, with descriptive objective and quantitative approach. The instrument used was the form, which aimed to research on the producers of organic... |

The paper is part of the studies concerning trade patterns and agri-food foreign trade policies in the EU enlargement context, aiming to assess the competitive trade advantages and disadvantages of the Romania’s agri-food products in the foreign trade relations. The analysis focuses on the challenges of the trade liberalization and its influence on the intensification of the commercial exchanges, the supply diversification and on the trade balance equilibrium, faced by Romania’s agri-food sector over the transition and pre-accession period. The structural reforms of the transition and EU accession preparations induced paramount changes in Romania’s agri-food trade pattern, i.e. a fluctuating evolution of the agri-food foreign trade, either in correlation... |

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the competitive performance of the EU countries for the prepared swine meat sector during the period 1990- 2003. This sector has been chosen for the role that traditional products play in most EU countries. To assess competitiveness, the analysis evaluates several trade indices to compare the trends over the last fifteen years: Revealed Comparative Advantage, the Vollrath indices, Net Export Index, and Grübel - Lloyd index. The data source was the Eurostat data base, considering intra - EU export and import data referred to 17 sub- sectors with 8 digit codes. Moreover, cluster analysis has been applied to highlight groups of countries with similar features. Good competitive performance in the prepared swine meat... |

In competitive market dairy production will shift to the regions with the best conditions. In the Soviet paradigm dairy production was evenly distributed throughout the country, what was caused by extremely low transportation prices and by differentiated by regions procurement prices. Thus, there was no specialized zones of dairy production. The start of economic liberalization in Russia was followed by the process of disintegration of the country's common economic space. Reforms entailed an increase in transportation costs and regional specialization based on comparative advantages of a certain commodity production. Specialized dairy producing zones started to emerge. This paper attempts to determine these zones in Russia in the nearest future. The... |

In this article the profitability of the bioethanol production in Germany is analysed under consideration of the international competition. Therefore, the production costs of bioethanol from wheat and beet in Germany as well as from sugar cane and corn in other representative countries are compared. Based on this, the competitiveness of imported as well as domestic bioethanol against gasoline on the German market are analyzed and the maximum payable feedstock price for sugar beet is calculated. The calculations lead to the result, that, despite the implemented mandatory blending, further cost reductions for the production of bioethanol in Germany are required in order to achieve competitiveness against imports, whereas the utilization of bioethanol is... |

Based on analysis of a time series of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) indicator and Relative Trade Advantage Index the performance of Hungarian agriculture and food industry has declined rapidly during the last fifteen years. This fact highlights the importance of searching new paradigms in development. In short term the increasing of production–quantity does not seem to be a rational way. The only alternative is the product–differentiation strategy. Under conditions of increasing competition in foreign markets the importance of domestic markets gains in importance. The domestic market is a dynamic one, too: the producers should be better focussed of new demands of specific consumer segments (e.g. elder generations, ethnic minorities etc…). On the... |

The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors which influence the competitiveness of local rice in Togo in order to contribute to a better formulation of a rice policy. This analysis was done by a characterization of the actual situation of the local production and by the evaluation of the incentives of the state pricing policy as well as the production’s competitiveness. The approach of the Policy Analysis Matrix (MAP) or reference price was used. The analysis of the results shows, on the one hand, that the production of local rice in Togo exhibits a comparative advantage compared to imported rice and, on the other hand, that the public interventions favour the local production. Indeed, the local production benefits from an implicit protection... |

This paper addresses the possibility that competitive rural manufacturing is increasingly driven by quality-of-life factors required to attract highly skilled and creative workers. Recent findings that highly creative workers are drawn to amenity-rich rural areas provide the empirical leverage for testing anecdotal claims that these areas tend to contain small manufacturing bases that are more reliant on innovation. This contrasts with the cost advantage rationale of traditional rural manufacturing, an advantage that is eroding with increased globalization. The analysis provides the first empirical evidence that the start of entrepreneurial manufacturing plants and the adoption of advanced technologies and management practices are strongly associated with... |

The five explanatory indicators of the competitiveness of characteristic agriculture are the agricultural science and technology, the cultural quality of agricultural labor force, the agricultural infrastructure, the resource endowment, and the agricultural management scale. According to these explanatory indicators, competitiveness of characteristic agriculture is relatively strong in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, which is mainly reflected in the resource advantage, irrigation degree, and road construction level. However, the agricultural technology level, the cultural quality of agricultural labor force, the agricultural mechanization, and the agricultural management scale have relatively poor competitiveness. Therefore, more attention... |

The goal of this paper is to assess the effect of regulatory burdens in the European dairy industry on its competitiveness. A theoretical foundation is provided by transaction cost economics and total quality management insights. The effects of legislation on administrative requirements and competitiveness are supposed to be mediated by impacts on innovativeness, company strategy, food safety system availability, as well as the available information & communication capabilities. We will connect to previous research (Wijnands et al., 2007) and the findings therein. Four sub-questions are addressed: • what is the relationship between administrative burdens, innovation and competitiveness? • what is the relationship between administrative burdens, food... |

Many farmers, in addition to normal farming activity, have already turned to agritourism as a source of additional farm income and opportunities. There are numerous benefits from the development of agritourism: it may strengthen local economy, create job opportunities and new businesses; develop and promote training and certification programs to introduce young people to agriculture and environment. Agritourism helps preserve rural lifestyles and landscape and also offers the opportunity to provide "sustainable" or "green" tourism. Organic agriculture is a cultural evolution that finds its origins in a environmentalist culture. Furthermore the focus on these products is due to demand on healthy foods with high quality standard limiting chemical substances... |
