Competitiveness of Russian Dairy Sector: Inter-Regional Comparison AgEcon
Mokshina, Polina.
In competitive market dairy production will shift to the regions with the best conditions. In the Soviet paradigm dairy production was evenly distributed throughout the country, what was caused by extremely low transportation prices and by differentiated by regions procurement prices. Thus, there was no specialized zones of dairy production. The start of economic liberalization in Russia was followed by the process of disintegration of the country's common economic space. Reforms entailed an increase in transportation costs and regional specialization based on comparative advantages of a certain commodity production. Specialized dairy producing zones started to emerge. This paper attempts to determine these zones in Russia in the nearest future. The...

Wirtschaftlichkeit von Bioethanol – Produktion und Produktionskosten im nationalen und internationalen Vergleich AgEcon
Henniges, Oliver.
In this article the profitability of the bioethanol production in Germany is analysed under consideration of the international competition. Therefore, the production costs of bioethanol from wheat and beet in Germany as well as from sugar cane and corn in other representative countries are compared. Based on this, the competitiveness of imported as well as domestic bioethanol against gasoline on the German market are analyzed and the maximum payable feedstock price for sugar beet is calculated. The calculations lead to the result, that, despite the implemented mandatory blending, further cost reductions for the production of bioethanol in Germany are required in order to achieve competitiveness against imports, whereas the utilization of bioethanol is...

THE NECESSITY OF STRATEGIC THINKING IN HUNGARIAN AGRIBUSINESS AgEcon
Lakner, Zoltan; Husti, Istvan.
Based on analysis of a time series of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) indicator and Relative Trade Advantage Index the performance of Hungarian agriculture and food industry has declined rapidly during the last fifteen years. This fact highlights the importance of searching new paradigms in development. In short term the increasing of production–quantity does not seem to be a rational way. The only alternative is the product–differentiation strategy. Under conditions of increasing competition in foreign markets the importance of domestic markets gains in importance. The domestic market is a dynamic one, too: the producers should be better focussed of new demands of specific consumer segments (e.g. elder generations, ethnic minorities etc…). On the...

The 24th hour of agricultural research AgEcon
Vida, Adrienn; Baksa, Adrienn.
Economic and social changes occurring in Hungary and all over the world mean new challenges for sciences. This trend goes also for agriculture; globalization, climate change, the increase in population and food demand, and the decrease of land used for food production at the same time cause problems that can be solved by means of sciences. The year 2007 was the beginning of a new era in agriculture and rural development. The financial period of 2007-2013 presents an essentially new situation in the European Union, so agricultural universities, high schools and research institutes, as well as market operators must undertake serious changes. As Hungary is basically an agricultural country; agriculture plays an important role in national economy, therefore...

Animal Disease and the Industrialization of Agriculture AgEcon
Hennessy, David A.; Wang, Tong.
The industrialization of animal agriculture has fundamentally transformed animal health markets while animal health innovations have promoted this industrialization. The subtlety of these interactions shows how little we know about agricultural industrialization. To illustrate, we consider three stylized features of industrialized animal agriculture. These are the closing off of production activities from external effects, emphasis on control, and use of biosecurity measures. We find that animal disease externalities should lead to higher stocking on any given farm, and also to deficient entry into animal production. Eradicating the disease in a region increases both the stocking rate per farm and the number of farms. We show that antibiotics as a control...

Compétitivité de la filière riz local au Togo: Une évaluation du taux de protection nominale, effective et du coût en ressource domestique AgEcon
Tabone, Kperim; Koffi-Tessio, Egnonto M.; Diagne, Aliou.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors which influence the competitiveness of local rice in Togo in order to contribute to a better formulation of a rice policy. This analysis was done by a characterization of the actual situation of the local production and by the evaluation of the incentives of the state pricing policy as well as the production’s competitiveness. The approach of the Policy Analysis Matrix (MAP) or reference price was used. The analysis of the results shows, on the one hand, that the production of local rice in Togo exhibits a comparative advantage compared to imported rice and, on the other hand, that the public interventions favour the local production. Indeed, the local production benefits from an implicit protection...

Ambient Returns: Creative Capital's Contribution to Local Manufacturing Competitiveness AgEcon
Wojan, Timothy R.; McGranahan, David A..
This paper addresses the possibility that competitive rural manufacturing is increasingly driven by quality-of-life factors required to attract highly skilled and creative workers. Recent findings that highly creative workers are drawn to amenity-rich rural areas provide the empirical leverage for testing anecdotal claims that these areas tend to contain small manufacturing bases that are more reliant on innovation. This contrasts with the cost advantage rationale of traditional rural manufacturing, an advantage that is eroding with increased globalization. The analysis provides the first empirical evidence that the start of entrepreneurial manufacturing plants and the adoption of advanced technologies and management practices are strongly associated with...

IMPACT ASSESSMENTS OF CHANGING AGRICULTURAL TRADE AGREEMENTS AND TARIFF BARRIERS BETWEEN SOUTH AFRICA AND EUROPEAN UNIONS AgEcon
Fenyes, Tamas I.; Meyer, Nicolas G.; Breitenbach, Marthinus C..
The aim of this study is to measure the competitiveness of the South African Agricultural Sector by analysing the effects of the Trade Development and Co-operation Agreement (TDCA). In broad terms the effects are expected to be twofold: (1) increased competition on the local market by the European Union (EU) products entering the market on a duty-free basis, and (2) improved access to the EU market for South African (SA) exports. These effects are analyzed by: • Taking a closer look at the TDCA. • Performing an export impact assessment. • Performing an import impact assessment.

SISTEMAS DE IRRIGAÇÃO: VANTAGEM COMPETITIVA E/OU INCERTEZA AgEcon

Competitiveness of Characteristic Agriculture in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Based on Explanatory Indicators AgEcon
Teng, Ming-lan.
The five explanatory indicators of the competitiveness of characteristic agriculture are the agricultural science and technology, the cultural quality of agricultural labor force, the agricultural infrastructure, the resource endowment, and the agricultural management scale. According to these explanatory indicators, competitiveness of characteristic agriculture is relatively strong in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China, which is mainly reflected in the resource advantage, irrigation degree, and road construction level. However, the agricultural technology level, the cultural quality of agricultural labor force, the agricultural mechanization, and the agricultural management scale have relatively poor competitiveness. Therefore, more attention...

O DESEMPENHO DO BRASIL NO MERCADO INTERNACIONAL DE PEDRAS PRECIOSAS AgEcon

CUSTOS DE MENSURAÇÃO E GOVERNANÇA NO AGRONEGÓCIO: UM ESTUDO DE CASOS MÚLTIPLOS NO SISTEMA AGROINDUSTRIAL DA CARNE BOVINA AgEcon
Caleman, Silvia Morales de Queiroz; Sproesser, Renato Luiz; Zylbersztajn, Decio.
Measurement Cost Theory (MCT) and Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) are both theoretical frameworks applied to the study of economic transactions. In the MCT, the attributes’ measurability is a key variable for identifying efficient modes of governance. The application of MCT to agri systems coordination is the context of this work, whose objective is to identify the governance mechanisms adopted in the beef chain. The transaction attributes of five beef chain subsystems and their degree of measurability (MCT) were analyzed according to TCE. An increasing gradient of coordination in function of the increase of asset specificity was observed, moving from one extreme of the spot market, exemplified by the commodity subsystem, to vertical integration,...

Administrative burdens and dairy industry competitiveness AgEcon
Bremmers, Harry J.; Poppe, Krijn J.; Wijnands, Jo H.M.; van der Meulen, Bernd M.J..
The goal of this paper is to assess the effect of regulatory burdens in the European dairy industry on its competitiveness. A theoretical foundation is provided by transaction cost economics and total quality management insights. The effects of legislation on administrative requirements and competitiveness are supposed to be mediated by impacts on innovativeness, company strategy, food safety system availability, as well as the available information & communication capabilities. We will connect to previous research (Wijnands et al., 2007) and the findings therein. Four sub-questions are addressed: • what is the relationship between administrative burdens, innovation and competitiveness? • what is the relationship between administrative burdens, food...

THE IMPORTANCE OF ORGANIC AGRICULTURE IN TOURISM RURAL AgEcon
Privitera, Donatella.
Many farmers, in addition to normal farming activity, have already turned to agritourism as a source of additional farm income and opportunities. There are numerous benefits from the development of agritourism: it may strengthen local economy, create job opportunities and new businesses; develop and promote training and certification programs to introduce young people to agriculture and environment. Agritourism helps preserve rural lifestyles and landscape and also offers the opportunity to provide "sustainable" or "green" tourism. Organic agriculture is a cultural evolution that finds its origins in a environmentalist culture. Furthermore the focus on these products is due to demand on healthy foods with high quality standard limiting chemical substances...
