Intraventricular pneumocephalus associated with nasocephalic necrosis in a puppy: a case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sena,J.O.; Costa,K.C.R.; Costa,P.M.; Miranda,F.G.; Silva,J.F.; Tôrres,R.C.S..
ABSTRACT Pneumocephalus is defined as the presence of air in any of the intracranial compartments. Its most frequent causes are trauma and cranial surgery. Clinical signs occur as a result of increased intracranial pressure and vary with the location and extent of the lesion. A case involving a seven-month-old female Saint Bernard, who suffered cranial trauma caused by a bite to the face at ten days of age and had presented with seizures and localized pain four months previously is reported. A computed tomography scan of the skull revealed a nasocephalic mass with low contrast enhancement, bone lysis, and hypodensity (-940 Hounsfield units) of the lateral and third ventricles, indicating intraventricular pneumocephalus. During surgery, a fragment of the...

Síndrome de Kartagener em um cão (Canis lupus familiaris) da raça Cocker Spaniel Inglês Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza Junior,P.; Silva,S.S.R.; Martins,M.C..
Kartagener is syndrome is a rare disorder described in dogs determined by the triad situs inversus totalis, chronic sinusitis, and bronchial disease. The clinical signs of chronic respiratory and other less common presentations (such as hydrocephalus and subfertility) are due to a concomitant ciliary dysfunction. This article describes the clinical, radiographic, and computed tomography findings and treatment in a dog affected by Kartagener is syndrome since early months of life. This is the first case report of this syndrome in a domestic dog in Brazil and the only known scientific report in the English Cocker Spaniel.

Acute-on-chronic subdural cranial hematoma in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Bonelli,M.A.; Silva,I.C.C.; Fernandes,T.H.T.; Schwarz,T.; Costa,F.S..
ABSTRACT A ten-month-old male Yorkshire terrier dog was evaluated via CT four months after traumatic brain injury. The head CT scan showed dilated ventricles associated with a peripheral crescent-shaped collection of blood near the right parietal bone with a mineralized area. The visceral layer of the hematoma was hyperattenuating on the native scan and showed moderate contrast enhancement after administration of intravenous iodinated contrast medium. No fractures were identified in the calvarium. These findings were compatible with acute-on-chronic calcified subdural hematoma, which have been described with more detail in humans. This is the first report to include the description of the imaging findings related to this condition using computed tomography...

Transitional carcinoma with extensive invasion of the bony orbit in a dog Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Paiva,S.C.C.S.; Werner,J.; Montiani-Ferreira,F.; Froes,T.R.; Machado,M.; Olbertz,L.; Lima,L.; Langohr,I..
A 12-year-old male English Pointer was examined due to a soft-tissue swelling at the medial canthus of the right orbital region, which was causing facial deformity. The dog had epiphora, purulent nasal discharge, epistaxis, dyspnea, and progressive weight loss. An intraoral mass was observed near the right maxillary premolars. Neoplastic disease was diagnosed based on ancillary tests, which included blood work, skull and intraoral radiographs, ocular ultrasonography and computed tomography. Histopathology revealed transitional carcinoma involving the nasal and oral cavities, maxilla, bony orbit and retrobulbar space. Nasal tumors represent approximately 2% of all tumors diagnosed in this species. Transitional carcinoma is the second most common type of...

Cranial cavity filled with cerebrospinal fluid in an otter (Lontra longicaudis) - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Costa,L.V.L.; Bonelli,M.A.; Silva,I.C.C.; Santos,M.S.; Fernandes,T.H.T.; Schwarz,T.; Costa,F.S..
ABSTRACT Computed tomography of the head of an otter with a history of incoordination, visual deficits, and seizures was performed. Intracranial images revealed a large non-enhancing fluid attenuating cystic lesion in the left frontoparietal region communicating with the left lateral ventricle and subarachnoid space. These findings are consistent with a congenital brain cavity filled by cerebrospinal fluid, with porencephaly being the most probable diagnosis based on the clinical and tomographic findings. The authors highlight the rarity of such a cystic lesion in wild animals, with this being the first report in otters.

Zygomatic arch fracture in a dog treated with Veterinary Cuttable Plate - case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Macedo,A.S.; Moens,N.M.M..
ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to describe a case of a right zygomatic arch fracture in a 5-year-old male Labrador Retriever diagnosed with aid of 3D Computed Tomography reconstruction. Because of the depressed fracture and interference with the eyeball, surgical repair of the right zygomatic arch fracture was performed with open reduction and stabilization with an 11-hole, 2.7mm Veterinary Cuttable Plate. Radiographs taken 60 days after surgery revealed that fracture healing occurred without complications with improved function and cosmetic appearance. Ninety days after surgery the patient was clinically discharged.

Quantitative computed tomography of the renal cortex in healthy dogs and cats Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,D.C.; Costa,L.A.V.S.; Silva,I.C.C.; Teixeira,M.W.; Costa,F.S..

Diagnostic value of computed tomography, radiography and ultrasonography in metacarpophalangeal joint disorders in horses Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Machado,V.M.V.; Aguiar,A.C.S.; Viana,G.F.; Crosignani,N.O.; Puoli Filho,J.N.P..
In modern society the work and athletic performance of horses has led to a very important animal production sector in which Brazil possesses the third largest horse stock. Among all equine lesions described, metacarpophalangeal (fetlock) joint lesions are considered one of the main causes of lameness. Consequently, there is a need to improve the understanding and diagnosis of these injuries. The most efficient imaging diagnostic methods for the fetlock region are computed tomography, radiography and ultrasound. Imaging studies of the anatomical structures involving this joint are extremely important to obtain a more precise diagnose. The present study was performed in order to evaluate the capacity of different imaging diagnostic modalities to detect a...

Costa,L.A.V.S.; Oliveira,D.C.; Lopes,B.F.; Lanis,A.B.; Teixeira,M.W.; Costa,F.S..
The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible alterations in radiodensity of the hepatic parenchyma and spleen resulting from the corticotherapy with prednisone, correlating these findings with serum biochemical hepatic transaminase activity. A clinical trial was performed on eight healthy dogs with the intent of evaluating possible hepatic alterations after prednisone therapy using quantitative computed tomography. All animals received prednisone orally at a dose of 2mg/kg of weight for 30 days. The radiodensity of the liver and spleen was determined before and after the period that the medication was administered. An increase in the radiodensity of the hepatic parenchyma between the initial and final experimental stages was observed. In the present...

Radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging at 0.5 Tesla of mechanically inducedosteoarthritis in rabbit knees BJMBR
Torelli,S.R.; Rahal,S.C.; Volpi,R.S.; Yamashita,S.; Mamprim,M.J.; Crocci,A.J..
In the present experimental study we assessed induced osteoarthritis data in rabbits, compared three diagnostic methods, i.e., radiography (XR), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and correlated the imaging findings with those obtained by macroscopic evaluation. Ten young female rabbits of the Norfolk breed were used. Seven rabbits had the right knee immobilized in extension for a period of 12 weeks (immobilized group), and three others did not have a limb immobilized and were maintained under the same conditions (control group). Alterations observed by XR, CT and MRI after the period of immobilization were osteophytes, osteochondral lesions, increase and decrease of joint space, all of them present both in the immobilized and...

Texture analysis of computed tomography images of acute ischemic stroke patients BJMBR
Oliveira,M.S.; Fernandes,P.T.; Avelar,W.M.; Santos,S.L.M.; Castellano,G.; Li,L.M..
Computed tomography (CT) images are routinely used to assess ischemic brain stroke in the acute phase. They can provide important clues about whether to treat the patient by thrombolysis with tissue plasminogen activator. However, in the acute phase, the lesions may be difficult to detect in the images using standard visual analysis. The objective of the present study was to determine if texture analysis techniques applied to CT images of stroke patients could differentiate between normal tissue and affected areas that usually go unperceived under visual analysis. We performed a pilot study in which texture analysis, based on the gray level co-occurrence matrix, was applied to the CT brain images of 5 patients and of 5 control subjects and the results were...

Computed tomography assessment of lung structure in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass BJMBR
Rodrigues,R.R.; Sawada,A.Y.; Rouby,J.-J.; Fukuda,M.J.; Neves,F.H.; Carmona,M.J.; Pelosi,P.; Auler,J.O.; Malbouisson,L.M.S..
Hypoxemia is a frequent complication after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), usually attributed to atelectasis. Using computed tomography (CT), we investigated postoperative pulmonary alterations and their impact on blood oxygenation. Eighteen non-hypoxemic patients (15 men and 3 women) with normal cardiac function scheduled for CABG under CPB were studied. Hemodynamic measurements and blood samples were obtained before surgery, after intubation, after CPB, at admission to the intensive care unit, and 12, 24, and 48 h after surgery. Pre- and postoperative volumetric thoracic CT scans were acquired under apnea conditions after a spontaneous expiration. Data were analyzed by the paired Student t-test and one-way repeated...

Facial trauma in a dog: advantages of the use of computed tomography on diagnostic of caudal fractures of mandible Ciência Rural
Carvalho,Vanessa Graciela Gomes; Pinto,Ana Carolina Fonseca; Gioso,Marco Antônio; Correa,Herbert Lima; Cavalcanti,Marcelo Gusmão Paraíso.
A multiple mandible fracture was diagnosed in a mixed breed dog. After clinical examination, extra-oral radiographs were used to evaluate the trauma but, a complete visualization of the fractures extension was difficult due to the great of structures of cranium. Then, the computed tomography was accomplished to help and to find all osseous tissues fractured, their exact location, existent fragments and their positions; being superior to the radiograph exam in the accurate diagnosis realized.
