Seasonal budgets of organic matter in the Ubatuba shelf system, SE Brazil. I. Planktonic and benthic components ArchiMer
Rocha, Gra; Rossi-wongtschowski, Cldb; Pires-vanin, Ams; Jarre-teichmann, A.
Planktonic and benthic productivity and consumption were estimated to assess the availability of food to higher trophic-level consumers in the Ubatuba ecosystem on the SE coast of Brazil. The study area included waters from 10 to 100 m deep and covered 3800 km(2). The trophic compartments of the system were established on ecologically or taxonomically related species, considering their relative abundance and similarity of diets and habits. The compartments are phytoplankton, zooplankton, salps, bacterioplankton, cnidaria, polyplacophora, mollusca, carnivorous benthos, detritivorous polychaetes, other detritivorous benthos, penaeidea-caridea, brachyura, and echinodermata. Biomass, production, and consumption were estimated in summer and winter. Plankton...

An analysis of seafood consumption survey methods in France. ArchiMer
Girard, Sophie; Mariojouls, Catherine; Paquotte, Philippe; Wisner-bourgeois, Claude.
(Not controled OCR) The different statistical data sources available for seafood I consumption analysis in France belong to three types : the apparent consumption estimated on the basis of a balance between production and trade, used at national scale and for international comparison, the data in value published by the national Institute for economic statistics, aggregating food balance sheet, and economic results of inquiries about the activities of the branch industries, and the household consumption estimated through consumers' panels. A critical and historical analysis of the different available data series is presented, with focus on the major difficulties when interpreting and cross-checking the data (series breaking-nomenclature items, range of...

Valorisation de la pêche artisanale de Saint Pierre et Miquelon : potentialités du marché local ArchiMer
Dewals, Jean-françois.
This thesis is part of the ATLANTILES program, which seeks to study the interactions between small-scale fishing, the historic sector of the archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon (SPM), and tourism, emerging sector. This work explores the ways in which seafood products from artisanal PMS fishing can be exploited on the local market. For this, it is organized in several parts. The first part presents the socio-demographic context of the archipelago and its influence on the local fishing sector. It highlights the important impact of COM status and the geographical position of the territory on the MPS fisheries sector. The second part of the paper introduces the characteristics of the local artisanal fishery and attempts to understand its interactions with...

The seafood markets in the northern mediterranean countries ArchiMer
Paquotte, Philippe; Guillard, Valerie.
A brief survey of the sea-food markets for the northern Mediterranean countries is presented, i.e. for Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. Then a comparative study between the markets belonging to the European Union is completed. Three of these countries (France, Italy and Spain) are characterised by a huge deficit in their external sea-products trade. Greece is almost balanced, but Portugal has been importing increasingly more over the last few years. About 45% of the imports come from the European Union. After many years of increasing value, we can now see a stabilisation in the fish price. Since 1977, the consumption of fresh products has been receding in favour of frozen and processed products. Cultured salmon and shrimp which...

Dairy Food Consumption, Production, and Policy in Japan AgEcon
Campo, Isabelle Schluep; Beghin, John C..
We explore and investigate Japanese dairy markets. We first provide an overview of consumer demand and how it evolved after World War II. Using historical data and econometric estimates of Japanese dairy demand, we identify economic, cultural, and demographic forces that have been shaping consumption patterns. Then we summarize the characteristics of Japanese milk production and dairy processing and policies affecting them. We next describe the import regime and trade flows in dairy products. The analysis of the regulatory system of the dairy sector shows how its incentive structure affects the long-term prospects of various segments of the industry. The paper concludes with policy recommendations of how to reform the Japanese dairy sector.

INCOME, WEALTH, AND THE ECONOMIC WELL-BEING OF FARM HOUSEHOLDS AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; El-Osta, Hisham S.; Morehart, Mitchell J.; Johnson, James D.; Hopkins, Jeffrey W..
Agricultural policy is rooted in the 1930s notion that providing transfers of money to the farm sector translates into increased economic well-being of farm families. This report shows that changes in income for the farm sector or for any particular group of farm businesses do not necessarily reflect changes confronting farm households. Farm households draw income from various sources, including off-farm work, other businesses operated, and —increasingly — nonfarm investments. Likewise, focus on a single indicator of well-being, like income, overlooks other indicators such as the wealth held by the household and the level of consumption expenditures for health care, food, housing, and other items. Using an expanded definition of economic well-being, we...

Non-Linear Dynamics and Predictable Forecast Errors: An Application to the OECD Forecasts for Germany AgEcon
Antzoulatos, Angelos A.; Wilfling, Bernd.
Recent theoretical advances in consumption theory suggest that there may exist predictable consumption surges which, if not taken sufficiently into account in forecasting, may lead to predictable forecast errors. We use this insight to identify economic variables that might help improve the OECD's forecasts for Germany's consumption and GDP growth.

2001 OUTLOOK OF THE U.S. AND WORLD SUGAR MARKETS AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2000-2010 by using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to improve over the next ten years after the current over supply is reduced. World demand for sugar is expected to grow faster than world supply, resulting in gradually increasing Caribbean sugar prices from 8.51 cents/lb in 2000 to 12.67 cents/lb in 2010. The U.S. wholesale price of sugar is projected to increase from 22.5 cents/lb in 2000 to 26.6 cents/lb in 2010, if the United States maintains its sugar programs. World...

Changes in Food, Alcohol and Cigarettes Consumption during Transition: Evidence from Russia AgEcon
Herzfeld, Thomas; Huffman, Sonya Kostova; Oskam, Arie J.; Rizov, Marian.
This paper examines the changes in nutritional behavior of Russian adults over the ten-year transition period, between 1994 and 2004. We present evidence on the impact of individual as well as regional characteristics on changes in fat, protein, alcohol and cigarette consumption, and on diversity of diet. The results from a dynamic empirical model suggest that among microeconomic determinants, initial levels of consumption, gender, holding a university degree, and having access to a garden plot have a significant impact on the changes in consumption behavior in Russia. Regarding the macroeconomic variables, economic growth has a significant impact on changes in fat and protein consumption and on alcohol use, while unemployment changes significantly...

CHINA'S FOOD AND AGRICULTURE: ISSUES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY AgEcon
China's impact on world agricultural markets in coming decades will depend on many factors. Growing income and transition to modern urban lifestyles will increase demand for all foods, but demand will shift toward meat and high-value products. WTO accession may increase openness of China's agricultural trade and allow more imports. An understanding of geographic variations of consumption, production, trade, and policy is critical to understanding the vast China market. Development of transportation infrastructure and market channels will make it easier for food products to reach consumers. China's approach to biotechnology and its reform of institutions for allocating land, labor, and water inputs have important implications for agricultural productive...

The production and the consumption of this nontraditional product, is the reason for this investigation, where a concerted effort was necessary to interpret all the processes that are developed and which involve the elements of a certain observed community. It is considered that this was a very valuable resource in the raised investigation, since we had to be in tune with the prevailing culture in those scenes where the data rose, that way there will be levels of confidence between the people of the different communities could be generated that were involved in the interviews and the observation field, from a perspective where the investigator felt like “native” of that ethnic group or race from that way, the work of compilation would acquire major...

Reconsiderando la metodología FAO sobre el cálculo del número de personas que pasan hambre en el mundo AgEcon
Morales-Opazo, Cristian; Barreiro-Hurlé, Jesús.
FAO measure of undernourishment is calculated based on three main parameters: dietary energy supply (DES), minimum dietary energy requirement (MDER), and the coefficient of variation of dietary energy consumption (CV). In the current implementation of this methodology, the DES and the MDER change over time, as would be expected. The CV, however, remains constant. However, we expect the CV to change over time and be a function of income and prices. This paper discusses why the CV should change in response to changes in these variables, and suggests a practical way to estimate changes in the CV over time in the absence of survey data.

Portfolio Choice with Uncertain Consumption Prices: a mean-variance approch AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Cecchetti, Stephen G..
This paper presents a mean-variance model of portfolio choice and asset pricing when the price of consumption goods as well as the return to assets is uncertain. The correlation of an assets return with purchases at expected prices is shown to reduce both the mean return and the variance of the return of an asset. A numerical approximation is computed to check the accuracy of the mean and variance approximation. Uncertainty of consumption prices is shown to result in long (or speculative) futures holding.

Effects of Non-farm Employments on Poverty among Small Households in Developed Villages of Bangladesh: A Case of Comilla Sadar Upazila AgEcon
Malek, Mohammad Abdul; Usami, Koichi.
The study aims at estimating comprehensive effects of non-farm employments (NFEs) on poverty based on an intensive field survey conducted in 2008 on about 175 small landholding households in developed four villages of Comilla Sadar Upazila. We analyze participating factors of small household workers in NFEs and their effects on household production (farming and non-farm activities) and consumption (both food and non-food). For estimating consumption effects (poverty), we focus on food adequacy, income poverty and education poverty (as a part of human poverty). At each level of estimation, we depend on appropriate econometric regressions. Results find the significant positive role of overall NFEs on household NFAs rather faming. Remittance incomes do not...

2007 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Industries, 2006-2016 AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2006-2016 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain profitable over the next ten years mainly because higher world oil prices have increased the conversion of sugar into ethanol by Brazil, while other exporting countries have increased their production in response to those higher prices. Brazil is the largest exporter of sugar, and it is expected that the rate of increase in Brazilian sugar exports may be reduced due to high oil prices. World demand for sugar is expected...

OUTLOOK OF THE WORLD RICE INDUSTRY UNDER ALTERNATIVE TRADE LIBERALIZATION POLICIES IN JAPAN AND KOREA AgEcon
Koo, Won W.; Taylor, Richard D..
This report evaluates the world rice industry for the 1998-2010 period by using the World Rice Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, the weather, and technological change. This report evaluates three scenarios: the base scenario, the partial trade liberalization scenario in Japan and South Korea, and the full trade liberalization scenario. The partial trade liberalization scenario includes a partial liberalization of rice imports in Japan and South Korea from the year completing the minimum market access commitments under the UR agreement to 2010. The full trade liberalization scenario includes a full liberalization of rice imports in Japan and South Korea from...

Consumption of Home-Delivered Foods: Results from an Exploratory Survey AgEcon
Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr.; Farooq, Zafar.
This study examines the effect of various factors on the decision to consume home-delivered foods. The results of the study suggest that the decision to order food for home delivery is determined by gender, price consciousness, number of adults and children in the household, employment status, education level, ownership of microwave oven and, to some extent race, age and income. Specifically, the results suggest that less price-conscious, employed, higher-educated, white males within the 25-34 age group, in a household with a microwave oven, with smaller number of adults, but with children are more likely to purchase home-delivered food that others.
