UNDERSTANDING THE DEMAND SIDE AND COORDINATING THE SUPPLY SIDE FOR CONNECTED GOODS AND SERVICES AgEcon
Ladegard, Gro; Romstad, Eirik.
This paper addresses the coordination and innovation issues needed for promoting value added at the rural and regional level. There are two sides to value added: the ability to meet consumer demand, and to identify least cost ways of supplying the demanded goods. Human and social capital plays an important role on both sides. At the municipality level the supply side issues are complex. First, because the production space has far more dimensions than for the single entrepreneur. Second, because the value of some goods and services produced depend on what other goods and services that is available. On the supply side networks are important to solve the coordination issues, while networks for identifying and understanding consumer preferences are important...

Can supply chain's coordination mechanisms include small holders? Insight from an empirical work in Costa Rica. AgEcon
Faure, Guy; D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Coq, Jean-Francois; Saenz, Fernando.
Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate...

Contract Production of Green Peas AgEcon
Olesen, Henrik Ballebye.
This paper analyzes a contract between farmers and a large company in the Danish food industry, Danisco Foods. Production of green peas requires a very accurate coordination, which is obtained through centralized decision-making. The contract is based on a tournament system providing risk sharing between the farmers. General problems from the contract theory such as hold up, moral hazard, risk sharing and screening are analyzed. The paper illustrates the tradeoffs between these problems in design of contracts. By negotiating the contract through a pea-growers association, the farmers gain some bargaining power. Thus the farmers can ensure that Danisco Foods uses only one contract for all farmers. This paper analyzes the consequences of the farmers'...

USE OF COORDINATION SPHERES IN FOOD ECONOMICS AgEcon
Toth, Jozsef.
The coordination plays central role in the economics. The conventional economic theory looks at the market and enterprise (or hierarchy) as two different, separated manner of coordination of economic goods and services. However the modern organization theory, price theory and institutional economics show that different types (not only market and enterprise, but also several types of hybrid forms) of coordination (or governance structure) necessarily live together in the current economic system. Based on my previous research on the field of regional clusters in the food industry I came to the conclusion that the cluster is one of the spheres where economic coordination can occur. At the same time I pointed out that the ways of coordination can be ordered on...

Market and Coordination Failures in Poor Rural Economies: Policy Implications for Agricultural and Rural Development AgEcon
Dorward, Andrew; Kydd, Jonathan; Poulton, Colin.
This paper argues that the disappointing outcomes of adjustment policies in poor rural economies, principally in sub-Saharan Africa, can be partly attributed to weaknesses in the neo-classical theory which underlies these polices and from associated failures to recognise structural changes (or transitions) in growing agricultural economies. After a brief description of agricultural policy changes in sub Saharan Africa, the mixed achievements of market liberalisation policies are explained using new institutional economic arguments regarding inherent difficulties in economic coordination in poor economies, difficulties which markets themselves cannot overcome. A novel framework is put forward for understanding coordination failure and integrating it with...

The Research of the Balanced Development of China’s Urban-rural Spatial Integration Based on the Evolution of Regional Spatial Structure AgEcon
Duan, Lu-feng; Zhang, Hong.
The general law of regional spatial evolution is researched. In the process of the evolution of four stages, namely the early stage of traditional agriculture and industrialization, the middle stage of industrialization, the later stage of industrialization and post-industrialization, the types of space are homogenized space, polarized space, pole-axis space and integrated space respectively; the choosing of the spatial location is influenced by economy, society and environment, and the spatial structure extends along with three-dimensional space. Based on the fact that China’s urban-rural spatial structure evolution develops rapidly, and the outstanding characteristics of dual structure becomes the main obstacle to urban-rural balanced development, the...
