Huvet, Arnaud; Fabioux, Caroline; Lapegue, Sylvie; Boudry, Pierre.
Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea gigas, two cupped oysters of Asian origin (O'Foighil et al, 1998), have been introduced successively in Europe during the XVlth and the XXth century (Grizel et Héral, 1991). The present populations of C. angulata appear to be limited to the south of Spain and Portugal, whereas the distribution of C. gigas in Europe is rising because of the development of oyster farming. The distinction between the two subspecies in based on a RFLP marker of the mitochondrial genome (COI) which shows a strong genetic differentiation between the two subspecies populations (Boudry et al., 1998). On the contrary, the nuclear markers (microsatellites) showed a smaller genetic differentiation between them (Huvet et al, under press). The...

A comparative study of the growth of the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and their hybrids was carried out in 1999 in system controlled with contribution of the micro alga Skeletonema costatum. The results showed significant differences of the pondéral growth of the four studied progenies. The animals C. gigas had growth rates 1.4 times greater than C. angulata oysters. The hybrid progenies were shown more powerful than Portuguese oysters but are not different from the Japanese oysters. The ecophysiologic study showed that the averages of filtration and oxygen uptake, obtained by means of a three hours recording, cannot differentiate the four studied progenies. On the other hand, the calculation of the FTA (Feeding Time Activity) allowed to...

Grizel, Henri.
Two successive diseases struck the flat oyster Ostrea edulis farms in Brittany. These two epizooties lead to some changes in the farming practices. The oyster culture developed towards the open ocean, in the sublitoral part. New techniques have been developed for the culture and collection. The flat oyster has been partially replaced by the cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas whose production went from 3 000 to 16 000 tonnes. They also had heavy consequences on the regional economy. The important mortalities decimated the stocks. The production dropped by about 17 000 tonnes from 1910 to 1982. For the same period of time, profits from the sale of the produced flat oysters dropped from 131.6 million to 65.2 million francs. Numerous companies reduced the surface...

Bougrier, Serge; Raguenes, Gerard; Bachere, Evelyne; Tige, Gilbert; Grizel, Henri.
The inability to rear the oysters C. gigas and O. edulis in certain Brittany waters has prompted us to conduct breeding trials with C. angulata C. gigas and their hybrids. Results have revealed that all the strains tested were sensitive to Tributyl tin (TBT), showing atnormal shell thickness and their growth was lower than C. gigas. In addition, C. angulata was still affected by the presence of the Iridovirus in France.

Comparative study of shell shape and muscle scar pigmentation in the closely related cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata, C. gigas and their reciprocal hybrids ArchiMer
Batista, Frederico; Ben-hamadou, Radhouan; Fonseca, Vera; Taris, Nicolas; Ruano, Francisco; Reis-henriques, Maria; Boudry, Pierre.
The taxonomic status of the cupped oysters Crassostrea angulata and C. gigas has received considerable attention in the last decades. Based on larval shell morphology, experimental hybridization, allozymes and nuclear DNA studies several authors have considered these two taxa as being synonymous. However, mitochondrial data showed clear genetic differences between the two taxa. In addition, microsatellite-based studies and cytogenetic studies have also provided evidence that supports their differentiation. Considerable differences have also been observed at the phenotypic level in terms of growth rate and ecophysiological parameters. In the present study, C. angulata from Sado estuary (Portugal) and C. gigas from Seudre estuary (France) were collected and...

Haure, Joel; Huvet, Arnaud; Palvadeau, Hubert; Nourry, Max; Penisson, Christian; Boudry, Pierre; Martin, Jean-louis.
A comparative study of the growth performances in cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and their hybrids was conducted from March to October 1999 in a controlled farm with phytoplankton (Skeletonema costatum) input. The individuals, of the same age, were from genitors which had been identified through a marker analysis of the mitochondrial genome (Boudry et al, 1998). As a consequence, two pure offspring were obtained through the crossing of Portuguese oyster C. angulata (AA) genitors and the crossing of Japanese oyster C. gigas (GG) genitors. Two other offsprings were produced through the hybrid crossing of C. gigas female genitors with C. angulata (GA) male genitors on one hand, and C. angulata female genitors with C. gigas (AG) male...

ArchiMer
His, Edouard.
Portuguese oysters, C. angulata from brood ponds at Arcachon (salinity 27-28ppt) were exposed to lowered salinities and their valve activity continuously recorded. Down to 2 ppt, normal activity was resumed within 24 hours, between 8 and 11%, oysters, survived and adapted slowly, below 8%, oysters died. Sexually mature oysters are more susceptible and may die at 10 to 8% salinity, perhaps because the gonad is full of gametes. Oysters from different localities probably respond differently to changed salinity.

Evidence for natural hybrtidisation between the two oyster sub-species Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata in Southern Europe ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Huvet, Arnaud; Fabioux, Caroline; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea gigas, two cupped oyster taxa of Asian origin (O'Foighil et al, 1998), were successively introduced into Europe during the XVIth and the XXth century respectively (Héral and Grizel, 1991). To date, populations presumed to be C. angulata remain only in the south of Spain and Portugal, while the geographic range of C. gigas is expending, notably due to aquaculture. The two taxa can be distinguished by RFLP analysis of the mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxydase I locus (COI). This marker revealed strong genetic differentiation between Asian populations of the two taxa (Boudry et al., 1998). In contrast, nuclear markers showed a much lower genetic differentiation (Huvet et al, in press). The absence of any reproductive barrier...

Oyster population genetics : understanding natural populations and tracing introductions ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Boudry, Pierre.
Oysters are among the most familiar of all marine invertebrate taxa. However our knowledge of oyster phylogeny and systematics is fragmentary. This is principally due to the plastic growth patterns of these animals, which result in a wide range of overlapping, ecophenotypic variants that greatly reduce the value of analysis based on shell morphology. Besides that, many intentional or accidental anthropogenic transfers have emphasised this situation. In several cases of misclassification or misidentification of oysters, DNA molecular data, have provided valuable new insights on the tracing of introductions or more generally on the phylogeographic relationships between oyster species. We will illustrate this issue with recent case studies from our lab on...

New insights about the introduction of the Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, into the North East Atlantic from Asia based on a highly polymorphic mitochondrial region ArchiMer
Grade, Ana; Chairi, Hicham; Lallias, Delphine; Power, Deborah M.; Ruano, Francisco; Leitao, Alexandra; Drago, Teresa; King, Jonathan W.; Boudry, Pierre; Batista, Frederico M..
It is commonly presumed that the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata was introduced into the North East (NE) Atlantic from Asia. The analysis of the nucleotide sequence of a highly polymorphic non-coding mitochondrial region (major noncoding region - MNR) of C. angulata samples collected in Europe (Portugal), Africa (Morocco) and Asia (Shantou and Taiwan) provided new insight into the introduction of this species into the NE Atlantic. Sixty haplotypes and a nucleotide diversity of 0.0077 were observed in 130 analyzed sequences. Higher nucleotide diversity levels were observed in NE Atlantic sites than in Asian sites and significant genetic differentiation was found between the two. Our results suggest that C. angulata might have been introduced to the...

Comparative analysis of oxygen consumption rates between cupped oyster spat of Crassostrea gigas of French, Japanese, Spanish and Taiwanese origins ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Wolowicz, Maciej; Latala, Adam; Geairon, Philippe; Huvet, Arnaud; Boudry, Pierre.
Respiration rates of various geographical strains of Crassostrea gigas were compared to assess the respiratory expenditure as a physiological indicator of catabolism (cost of maintenance). Parental oysters, sampled in France (Marennes-Oleron), Japan (Hiroshima), Taiwan (Tunkang) and Spain (Cadix), were differentiated by both their geographic origin and by mitochondrial DNA markers, allowing the distinction between the two closely related taxa Crassostrea gigas and Crassostrea angulata. After reproduction of these parental oysters, respiration rates of spat of each strain, reared under common controlled conditions, were individually estimated at 20 degrees C by using a volumetric microrespirometer. Our results demonstrated that physiological variability...

Etude préliminaire de l'acide désoxyribonucléique (ADN) d'huîtres du littoral atlantique français ArchiMer
Gras, Marie-paule.
The mortality that decimated Portuguese oysters, C. angulata, in 1970-1971, up to 80% in most sectors, required the introduction of C. gigas oysters resistant to disease and whose reproduction proved itself to be excellent (GRAS and assoc. 1971). Artificial beds of Pacific oysters were created. Nonetheless, in some areas, there continued to be small populations of C. angulata that, mixed in with the C. gigas oysters that had been brought in, participated in reproduction. Genetic problems then arose, among which the selection of specimens and hybridisation were to be considered more specifically. There are, in fact, two cases of hybridisation.

The taxonomic status and origin of the Portuguese oyster Crassostea angulata (Lamark, 1819) ArchiMer
Batista, Frederico; Leitao, Alexandra; Huvet, Arnaud; Lapegue, Sylvie; Heurtebise, Serge; Boudry, Pierre.
The taxonomic status of the Portuguese oyster Crassostrea angulata and the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas has often been a matter of controversy. Based on larval shell morphology, experimental hybridisation and electrophoretic studies of enzyme polymorphism several authors have considered these two species as being synonymous. During the recent years, several genetic studies based on mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites data have provided evidences that the two taxa are genetically distinct although closely related. Furthermore, karyotype analyses have also highlighted the close genetic similarity of these taxa in comparison with other cupped oyster species. However, a comparative analysis of restriction enzymes ideograms revealed differences between...
