The diversity on coral reefs has long captivated observers. We examine the mechanisms of speciation, role of ecology in speciation, and patterns of species distribution in a typical reef-associated clade-the diverse and colorful Calcinus hermit crabs-to address the origin of tropical marine diversity. We sequenced COI, 16S, and H3 gene regions for similar to 90% of 56 putative species, including nine undescribed, "cryptic" taxa, and mapped their distributions. Speciation in Calcinus is largely peripatric at remote locations. Allopatric species pairs are younger than sympatric ones, and molecular clock analyses suggest that > 2 million years are needed for secondary sympatry. Substantial niche conservatism is evident within clades, as well as a few major... |

In crustacean, immunoreactive peptides were detected with salmon-calcitonin antibodies by immunocytochemistry in its eyestalks and by radioimmunoassay in the haemolymph and the digestive tract. Two different molecules were purified: the first with their molecular weight comprised between 3-5 kDa, the second having a molecular weight of 22 kDa which could correspond to a precursor of the first one. Their characterization is on progress. |

This monograph is the first to state by a systematic research the rules which control the production of the organic losses in shape of eggs and exoskeletons during the life of Crustacea. The weight and the energy content of the material thrown out are the chief criteria selected to characterize the germinal production, relative to the egg-mass, and the exuvial production, relative to the organic fraction of the exoskeleton. The determination of these parameters, at the level of the organism or of the population, takes into account the systematic position of the animals, the duration of their intermolt periods, fecundity and other indices in relation to environmental factors. The loss of matter and energy with reproduction and molting(studied for different... |

Introduction : Since 1978, new measures to better manage lobster fisheries were implemented in the Celtic Sea within the context of Community regulations. Meshing, in particular, was set at 60mm, but many owners, in order to maintain sufficient leeway vis-à-vis the regulations and to avoid administrative hassles adopted at the outset fish meshing at 70mm, even 80mm. Certain habits aiming to compensate for the losses due to these increases were established: Adoption of better-performing trawls, increase in the secondary catch and enlargement of the fisheries. At the same time, especially because of strong demand from international bodies, OEM and especially EEC, knowledge about the lobster spread and more reliable assessments were achieved, the main problem... |

The crustacean integument is an excellent model for the study of cuticular morphogenesis, at different organization levels. At the supermolecular level, subunits of chitin and protein assemble and show the organization of a stabilized liquid crystal. At higher levels corresponding to cells and cells populations, several controls are involved in the fine architecture of the epicuticle, in the mineral distribution and in characters which concern the whole animal, such as isometric or allometric growth. |

A bibliographic review has been made on the toxicity of ten metals for some marine larvae of commercial interest. We have classified, according to toxicity, organic salts of tin, mercury, silver, copper, zinc, nickel, lead, cadmium, chromium and manganese. Some synergistic effects of metals, temperature and salinity are described as well as the action of silt suspended in water. |

This paper described Xylocythere sarrazinae sp. nov. (Ostracoda: Cytheroidea: Cytheruridae: Eucytherurinae), collected at 2196 m depth from the Grotto hydrothermal edifice (Main Endeavor Field, Juan de Fuca Ridge) in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. This new species was found living in association with Ridgeia piscesae tubeworm assemblages. It is the second representative of Xylocythere described from such vents. Xylocythere sarrazinae sp. nov. is easily distinguished from the seven described species of Xylocythere by the surface ornamentations of its carapace, with the most similar species to it being Xylocythere pointillissima Maddocks & Steineck, 1987. However, Xylocythere sarrazinae sp. nov can be distinguished from X. pointillissima based on the... |

A taxonomic review of the two genera of the family Alvinocarididae (Decapoda: Caridea), Rimicaris Williams and Rona, 1986 and Chorocaris Martin and Hessler 1990, is presented based on study of type materials and/or supplemental material from recent collections. Two species of Rimicaris, R. exoculata Williams and Rona 1986 and R. kairei Watabe and Hashimoto 2002, and three species of Chorocaris, C. chacei Williams and Rona 1986, C. vandoverae Martin and Hessler 1990, and C. paulexa Martin and Shank 2005, are recognized. All species are exclusively associated with deep-water hydrothermal community. Close relationship between the two genera is confirmed by morphological characters, but the monophyly of Chorocaris is not corroborated. An examination of a good... |

The shrimp Mirocaris fortunata is a hydrothermal vent species that is found at most vent-sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This endemic species is found across a hydrothermal gradient, with thermal conditions ranging from 2-9 degrees C in ambient seawater to fairly warm values of about 25 degrees C. We performed in vivo experiments on M. fortunata specimens originating from different sites and depths (850 m to 2300 m), both at atmospheric pressure and in pressurized aquaria, to characterise the upper thermal limits of this species. Atmospheric pressure results show that thermal physiology should be studied at each population's native pressure. At in situ pressure, shrimps from Menez Gwen (850 m depth) and Lucky Strike (1700 m depth) do not survive... |

In decapod Crustacea, the rhythmic activity of the pyloric filter is programmed within a network of 14 neurons in the stomatogastric nervous system. The pyloric network activity is underlied by both the endogenous regenerative properties of its neurons and the organization of their synaptic connections. Both factors are controlled by central modulatory neurons. Two of these neurons were identified, the APM neuron, which induces, and the PS neuron, which suppresses, the regenerative properties of pyloric neurons. APM can start and PS can stop the rhythmic pyloric activity, but both of them can also change its expression. Because of this control, the pyloric network can produce several types of motor pattern. |

The tanaidacean crustacean, Zeuxo holdichi was first described from Arcachon Bay, France, by Bamber in 1990. Since then, this species has been recorded several times in Europe, from Iberian Peninsula to Germany. In this present study, we report new records of this species along the northern coasts of France bordering the English Channel. It is hypothesized that Z. holdichi is being spread because of aquaculture activities. |
