EFFICIENT CONSUMER RESPONSE IN DER WERTSCHÖPFUNGSKETTE MILCH AgEcon
Obersojer, Thomas; Weindlmaier, Hannes.
The German food market has undergone tremendous changes within the last years: in food retailing a concentration process has taken place, discount-stores have gained market shares, and consumers have shown a hybrid and smart buying behaviour demanding highest quality at the lowest price. New information technologies have been developed and enable a closer collaboration between the members of the chain. Therefore, the former isolated management of single firms must be replaced by a vertical comprehensive management encompassing each individual member of the supply chain. In this context, Efficient Consumer Response (ECR) is seen to be the successful supply chain strategy for the grocery industry. This paper gives an overview of the ECR concept and its single...

Internationalization and Firm Performance in Agribusiness: Empirical Evidence from European Cooperatives AgEcon
Heyder, Matthias; Makus, Christian; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
The ongoing internationalization of markets has become a major issue also for companies of the agribusiness. Nevertheless, neither the degree of internationalization of agribusiness firms nor the internationalization-performance relationship in the agribusiness sector have been analyzed thoroughly so far. To help fill this void, we use panel data compiled from annual reports and balance sheets to investigate the internationalization as well as the internationalization-performance relationship of 21 leading European cooperatives in the dairy and meat sectors. Our results indicate that internationalization has a significant positive impact on firm performance.

DER SLOWAKISCHE MARKT FUR MILCH UND MILCHPRODUKTE -- VOM BEGINN DER TRANSFORMATION BIS ZUM EU-BEITRITT AgEcon
Glitsch, Kristina; Eerits, Alena.
Like in other CEEC, transition in the beginning of the 1990s had significant consequences for the agricultural and food sectors in Slovakia. For example, Slovakian consumers reacted to the abolition of consumer subsidies by drastically reducing their consumption of milk and milk products. Concurrently, milk production declined and now stands at fifty percent of its 1989 level. Dairies were closed down while those remaining carried on producing under constantly increasing overcapacities. In the years prior to EU accession, activities in the milk sector were primarily aimed at the adoption of EU standards. Meanwhile, the Slovakian milk processing industry is predominantly in the possession of foreign investors. Present per capita consumption of milk and milk...

AZ ÁTALAKULÓ MAGYARORSZÁGI TEJGAZDASÁG AgEcon
Konig, Gabor.
Az EU csatlakozással a tejágazatban bár bővült a belföldi piac – nőtt a forgalom és a fogyasztás, amit a növekvő olcsó import fedezett –, a felvásárlás és az értékesítés (bel- és külpiacra egyaránt) csökkent, illetve stagnált. Az import erősödése a hazai cégek belpiaci részesedését mintegy 80%-ra csökkentette, miközben a vállalati koncentráció még intenzívebbé vált a magyar tejágazatban, s a nagyvállalatok tovább erősítették pozíciójukat, míg a kicsik tovább gyengültek. 2005-ben a Parmalat – állami segítséggel – termelői tulajdonba került, ami a vertikális integráció erősödéséhez vezetett. A külföldi tulajdon meghatározó helyzetbe került a tejiparban – 2004-ben 87% volt a részesedése, ami a második legnagyobb az élelmiszeripari alágazatok között –, célja...

Changes in the Hungarian dairy industry after EU accession AgEcon
Konig, Gabor; Major, Anita.
Since EU accession the Hungarian dairy industry’s domestic market has generally expanded as turnover and consumption have both grown, but this has been increasingly due to cheap imports, while the purchase and sale of domestic products has been decreasing or stagnating (both in the domestic and foreign markets). The growth in imports has cut Hungarian corporations domestic market share to 80%. In Hungary corporate concentration has become even more pronounced with large corporations further strengthening their position and smaller ones further shrinking. Moreover, foreign ownership prevails and has the primary aim of meeting domestic demand. Changes in ownership contribute to the strengthening of vertical integration. Still, in the EU corporate...

EU Dairy Sector: Impact of Luxemburg Reform, EU Enlargement and Trade Negotiations AgEcon
Bouamra-Mechemache, Zohra; Ali-Kein, Hela Hadj; Jongeneel, Roelof A.; Tonini, Axel; Requillart, Vincent.
The EU dairy sector is facing a period of significant changes that are due to three major decisions: the EU enlargement, the Luxembourg reform and on-going WTO negotiations. To evaluate the impact of such changes we developed a model of the EU and world dairy industry. The model is composed of two modules that interact: a milk and beef supply module and a dairy industry module. In this paper we present the model and focus on elements that are crucial for a better understanding of the impact of reforms: quota rents in the EU, evolution of production in the new member states and trade policy.

The Dairy Sector in the Central European Candidate (CEC) Countries – The Status of Restructuring and Future Challenges AgEcon
Hartmann, Monika.
The dairy sector in the CEC countries had to cope with tremendous adjustment pressures in the 90ies. Privatization and liberalization contributed to intense competition on the CEC countries’ dairy market. Major problems that impede the competitiveness of this sector are a considerable fragmentation of the dairy processing industry, pronounced excess capacities, high seasonality of milk production and low investment activities. The latter delays the modernization of processing technologies and thus hinders quality improvements and the adjustments of hygienic conditions as well as product and process standards to EU norms. These problems are common to all CEC countries, though to different degrees. In addition, especially in Bulgaria and Romania, but also in...

ANÁLISE DA ESTRATÉGIA TECNOLÓGICA EM EMPRESAS AGROINDUSTRIAIS – O CASO DA COLASCRIC AgEcon
Queiroz, Timoteo Ramos; Machado, Joao Guilherme de Camargo Ferraz; Bouroullec, Melise Dantas Machado.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the technological management in a dairy industry, making it possible to suggest improvements. An open-ended questionnaire was applied, considering two main points: the classification and comprehension of the company’s performance in relation to the technologies available and the understanding of the industry’s technological motivations, making it possible to analyze technological behaviors, forms of acquisition and adoption of technological innovations. It was observed that the company loses competitiveness due to the technology adopted, when compared to bigger players and when the distribution of its products is carried out through supermarkets. The changes introduced in the products’ portfolio were of public-domain,...

EU dairy policy and WTO negotiations AgEcon
Bouamra-Mechemache, Zohra; Requillart, Vincent.
The EU dairy sector is facing a period of significant changes that are due to three major decisions: the EU enlargement, the Luxemburg reform and on-going WTO negotiations. In this paper, we focus on the analysis of changes in both domestic and trade dairy policies using a spatial model of the dairy sector that includes EU25 member countries, the modelling of the rest of the world including the main world dairy exporter (Oceania) and 4 importing areas (Africa, America, Asia and the Rest of Europe). The paper provides detailed results with respect to dairy markets in the EU. We show that in the context of the Luxemburg reform, the WTO might have positive impacts on EU milk price. The positive impact on EU milk price of a reduction of the tariffs in the...

Minimum economic scale of an efficient farms in dairy industry AgEcon
Nagy, Adrian Szilard; Dekan, Tamas; Lorinczi, Krisztian; Peto, Karoly.
The aim of our research is to determine - on the grounds of the facts of an average dairy family farm – the necessary economic size to provide subsistence for a four member family, which solely has income from this activity. Our study used three different calculation models. The models featured considerable differences. In the first one the primary aim of the producer is to survive, therefore the achieved gross income in farming includes neither amortization costs, nor the arising costs of repair and maintenance. On the contrary, the primary aim of the second model is to keep up the technology and the stock, which could fulfil the requirements of simple reproduction. The third model assumes a technological development corresponding with 10% of the invested...

PRODUCER SEGMENTATION AND THE ROLE OF LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP IN MALAYSIA’S MILK SUPPLY CHAINS AgEcon
Boniface, Bonaventure.
Research on buyer-seller relationships in the agricultural sector receives little attention. A growing body of evidence suggests that strong buyer-seller relationships facilitate more efficient supply chains. The long term relationship literature tends to treat suppliers as a homogenous group when attempting to identify motivations, strategies and incentives to enhance the quality of buyer-seller relationships. This article explores the role of long-term relationships between buyers and sellers in Malaysia’s dairy industry, taking into consideration the heterogeneous nature of the producers. Interviews with 133 producers provide the data for this study. Cluster analysis suggests two well-defined groups differing in terms of demographic characteristics and...

Controlling Bacillus cereus adherence to stainless steel with different cleaning and sanitizing procedures used in dairy plants Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Salustiano,V.C; Andrade,N.J; Ribeiro Junior,J.I; Fernandes,P.E; Lopes,J.P; Bernardes,P.C; Portugal,J.G.
Bacillus cereus adherence to stainless steel used to milk contact surfaces was observed, depending on the cleaning and sanitizing procedures applied and the physicochemical properties of the surfaces. Numbers of surviving B. cereus after hygiene procedures were affected by temperature, the concentrations of both alkaline and acid washes, and the pH of the chlorine solution. The adhesion of B. cereus to the stainless steel was not thermodynamically favorable, and the adherence of this microorganism occurred in lower number, in accordance to the thermodynamic aspect of adhesion.
