The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains over 3000 records (more than 4000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 20 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The main species included in the archive are the devil fish (1 813 individuals), the basking shark (939 individuals), the blue shark (585 individuals) and the great white shark (337 individuals). In the last decades other species such as the shortfin mako (166 individuals), the spiny butterfly ray (138) and the thresher shark (174 individuals) were reported with an increasing frequency. This was possibly due to an increased public awareness on the conservation status of sharks, and a consequent development of...

Palaeontological collections at the Geological Museum, University of Copenhagen: from Cabinet of Curiosities to databases Naturalis
Harper, D.A.T..
Geological collections were established in the University of Copenhagen during the early 1700s with the presentation of fossil, mineral and rock collections by Count A.G. Moltke, mainly assembled by Ole Worm (1588-1654) in his Museum Wormianum. Currently the palaeontological collections in the Geological Museum, alone, contain over 1 million specimens, including 26,000 types. The focus of the collection remains on material from Denmark and Greenland. Highlights from Greenland include evidence of early life from the Archaean Isua Complex, the early Cambrian Sirius Passet fauna, Devonian amphibians, Triassic dinosaurs, mammals and pterosaurs, Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites together with Jurassic and Cretaceous plants. The Danish collections are dominated...

Volume 4, Standard library directory record structure OceanDocs
Moulder, D.S..
In this manual a Standard Library Directory Record Structure is proposed, for use in the preparation of databases of libraries and information centres. The structure is designed to be, as far as is possible, independent of the software used. Provision is made for additional fields for local needs. The structure incorporates the section of the Standard Directory Record Structure for organizations, individuals and their research interests which deals with organizations. (MIM Publication Series Volume 4).

OpenScienceDirectory (2008-2010): presented at the Twenty-first Session of the IOC Committee on International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE-XXI), Liège, Belgium, 23-26 March 2011. OceanDocs
Goovaerts, Marc.
The idea of the Open Science Directory started with a request of IOC/IODE to create a database of all accessible journals in oceanography and marine science. The A-to-Z-list of EBSCO was the perfect tool to organize this collection. It was an easy step to extend this collection to a general directory of journals accessible in developing countries. With the help of EBSCO, it was possible to create the Open Science Directory, which started on February 14, 2008. Access to scientific literature is very important for the scientific work of every scientist but is often extremely difficult to obtain in developing countries. As a result of different projects a large collection of e-journals is now available for researchers in developing countries. The number of...

Preservation biases, rates of evolution and coherence of databases: Bivalvia as a study case Ameghiniana
Ros,Sonia; de Renzi,Miquel.
Several hypotheses about the influence of preservation on Bivalvia rates of evolution estimates (marine and freshwater families) were tested in a previous paper. However, the database used for those tests had a patchy quality and our results were provisional. Now an improved database dealing with only marine families has been used in order to test again those hypotheses. We removed freshwater families from the early database and we test the statistical hypotheses on these two data sources. Diversification patterns remain stable in general with these different databases; however, only the improved database shows the mass extinction at the end of the Triassic times. Statistical conclusions in the previous paper are generally confirmed in the present study....
