Engineered solutions for animal heat stress abatement in livestock buildings. CIGR Journal
Arcidiacono, Claudia.
Heat stress in animal housing is one of the drivers affecting animal productivity and welfare in hot climates, and causing consequent reduced profits for the farmers. The main challenges that livestock breeding faces in hot climates regards how to foster, improve, and assess methods and strategies for animal heat stress abatement. Research studies in this field have generally proposed modifications in herd management and in feeding strategies, breed selection, and engineered solutions aimed at exploiting heat transmission phenomena. In this paper, the most recent engineered solutions for animal heat stress abatement in livestock buildings have been reviewed and described; they have involved new building and ventilation design and modelling, and improved...

Design and fabrication of a tractor powered leaves collector machine equipped with suction-blower system CIGR Journal
Azadbakht, Mohsen; Kiapey, Ali; Jafari, Ali.
Leaves scattered on the parks, passages, and other places have a detrimental effect on the beauty of the environment, and decrease photosynthesis, hence, the efficiency of plants.  Leaves are also used in the production of peat.  This makes using leaves collectors in parks, and organizations with a green space useful.  Due to the fact that leaves take up a high volume, their transportation is difficult.  Using the machine introduced in this paper which was equipped with a suction-blower system, increases efficiency, and at the same time decreases the costs of green space, and their workforce cost.  Focusing on overcoming the mentioned difficulties, this study was carried out in order to design and produce a tractor powered leaves collector equipped with...

Mathematical model for design of gender friendly farm equipment CIGR Journal
Singh, Shiv Pratap; Ekka, Utpal; Singh, Mukesh Kumar; Singh, M K.
Traditionally, the unit farm operations which require less muscle power is done by the women workers. The role of farm women are passive in majority of farm operations e.g. clod breaking, taking out weeds etc., assistance in sowing  e.g. dropping seeds or carrying seeds, weeding and interculture, harvesting, partly threshing as well as assistance in threshing, winnowing, cleaning-grading, carrying produce as well as grain. During last three decades, many research organizations in the country are working on assessment, refinement and development of gender friendly farm equipment. Based on various study conducted on gender perspective, a need was felt to work on algorithm, as algorithms design is a specific method to create a mathematical process in solving...

Design, Construction and Performance Evaluation of a Twin Screw Extruder CIGR Journal
Sobowale, Sunday Samuel.
The aim of this study was thus to design, construct a multi-purpose twin screw extruder and evaluate its performance. All parts of the extruder were constructed using locally available materials and its suitable for both batch and continuous production. The extruder essentially consists of the hopper, barrel, variable speed and temperature control, electrical motor and replaceable dies to give different sizes and shapes in the final products. It could also handle feed materials of different rheology. Performance evaluation of the extruder was done using cocoyam flour, varying feed moisture content (FMC) and screw speed (SS). Both the FMC and SS were observed to significantly affect the all performance indicators (expansion ratio, residence time, throughput...

Development of a Bush Mango (Irvingia Gabonensis) Nutcracker-6 CIGR Journal
Alonge, A.F..
This research work involves the design and fabrication of Irvingia nut cracking machines. It operates using impact technique which involves collision between the seednut and stationary wall. The procedures employed the design stage, fabrication and testing. The machine components are: impact drum, shaft, impeller (rotor), electric motor, driver and driven pulley and hopper. The cracking chamber consists of the impeller and impact drum. The seednuts were pre-treated before testing by sun-drying to improve its crackability. The machine gave a better performance at the speed of 2600 revolution per minute with average cracking efficiency, percentage kernel breakage and capacity of 88%, 17.5% and 916 nuts/hr. The improvement in the design can be achieved by...

A Model Analysis for the Design and Deployment of an Eulerian Sediment Trap Mooring Array in a Western Boundary Upwelling System from Southeast Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MENDOZA,URSULA; CANDELLA,ROGÉRIO N.; ASSAD,LUIZ P.F.; CASTILLO,FEDERICO V.; AZEVEDO,LAURA; KNOPPERS,BASTIAAN A.; ALBUQUERQUE,ANA LUIZA S..
This work addresses the design and configuration of a Eulerian sediment trap mooring array, which was deployed at the shelf edge (zm ≈ 140 m) 80 km off Cabo Frio, SE- Brazil (23° S). The site was subject to interplay between the Tropical Waters (TW) of the Brazil Current (BC), intrusions from the South Atlantic Central Waters (SACW), which are the source of upwelling in the region, and other oceanographic processes. Detailed computations were used to optimize the total weight, buoyancy balance, and maximum acceptable tilt to avoid hydrodynamic bias in the trapping efficiency and array adaptation to the local oceanographic conditions with the assistance of Matlab and Muringa programs and Modular Ocean Model 4.0 (MOM; i.e., to assert the vertical...

The design of an in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory and its importance in risk prevention: applicability of UV radiation BABT
Izquierdo,Enrique Gea; Velasco,Carlos Ángel Benavides; Escudero,José Vicente Maeso; Rodríguez,Antonio García.
This study addressed the environmental control of an IVF laboratory and the potential repercussions that the presence of certain physical, chemical and biological agents could have on workers' health or on the tasks they carried out. The design of the laboratory and its facilities contributed to an improvement in work quality and minimised the environmental-related risks. The preventive measures adopted had an influence on the carried out actions.

Effects of hurdle technology on Monascus ruber growth in green table olives: a response surface methodology approach BJM
Cappato,Leandro P.; Martins,Amanda M. Dias; Ferreira,Elisa H.R.; Rosenthal,Amauri.
ABSTRACT An ascomycetes fungus was isolated from brine storage of green olives of the Arauco cultivar imported from Argentina and identified as Monascus ruber. The combined effects of different concentrations of sodium chloride (3.5-5.5%), sodium benzoate (0-0.1%), potassium sorbate (0-0.05%) and temperature (30-40 °C) were investigated on the growth of M. ruber in the brine of stored table olives using a response surface methodology. A full 24 factorial design with three central points was first used in order to screen for the important factors (significant and marginally significant factors) and then a Face-Centered Central Composite Design was applied. Both preservatives prevented fungal spoilage, but potassium sorbate was the most efficient to control...

Design and Management of Irrigation Systems Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Holzapfel,Eduardo A; Pannunzio,Alejandro; Lorite,Ignacio; Silva de Oliveira,Aureo; Farkas,István.
Irrigation systems should be a relevant agent to give solutions to the increasing demand of food, and to the development, sustainability and productivity of the agricultural sector. The design, managing, and operation of irrigation systems are crucial factors to achieve an efficient use of the water resources and the success in the production of crops and orchards. The aim of this paper is to analyze knowledge and investigations that enable to identify the principal criteria and processes that allow improving the design and managing of the irrigation systems, based on the basic concept that they facilitate to develop agriculture more efficient and sustainable. The design and managing of irrigation systems must have its base in criteria that are relevant,...
