Study of the Drosophilidae (Diptera) communities on Atlantic Forest islands of Santa Catarina State, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Toni,Daniela C. de; Gottschalk,Marco S.; Cordeiro,Juliana; Hofmann,Paulo P.R.; Valente,Vera L.S..
A study of the community dynamics of Drosophilidae was carried out in six insular communities and two others on the mainland. Seasonal collections were carried out throughout two years in Santa Catarina State, southern of Brazil. The diversity index calculations show high values when compared with temperate climate communities. The sites on the mainland (Serra do Tabuleiro) presented the highest diversity, which was measured by the Diversity Index (H'). These sites are covered by primary Atlantic Forest and theoretically should have a higher variation of ecological niches. A dendogram showing the similarity between the communities, calculated by Morisita Index, points to a level of similarity equal to 60% for all communities. In this diagram, we can see...

Taxonomic survey of Drosophilidae (Diptera) from mangrove forests of Santa Catarina Island, Southern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Schmitz,Hermes J.; Valente,Vera L.S.; Hofmann,Paulo R.P..
Assemblages of drosophilids have been characterised in several environments of the Brazilian territory, like the Atlantic Rain Forest, urban areas, cerrados, the Amazon Forest, and others. The present survey is the first attempt to characterise the fauna of Drosophilidae in mangrove forests, an environment typical of tropical coasts worldwide. Twenty-eight samples were collected from the three main mangrove forests of Santa Catarina Island, southern Brazil, using banana-baited traps hung in trees. Samples were taken in January (summer), April (autumn), July (winter) and October (spring) between July 2002 and July 2005. In total, 82,942 specimens of drosophilids were caught, belonging to 69 species of six genera - Amiota Loew, Drosophila Fallén, Leucophenga...

Changes in Brazilian Drosophilidae (Diptera) assemblages across an urbanisation gradient Neotropical Entomology
Gottschalk,Marco S.; De Toni,Daniela C.; Valente,Vera L.S.; Hofmann,Paulo R.P..
The present study aims to characterise the assemblages of Drosophilidae sampled from four sites subject to different levels of urbanisation, in the city of Florianópolis, South Brazil. Five samples were collected between August 2000 and August 2001 and five between August 2002 and August 2003 in each site. A gradual change in the dominant species was observed in the urbanisation gradient, with an increase in relative abundance of exotic species in urban areas. Among the native species, the relative abundance of Drosophila capricorni Dobzhansky & Pavan had an expressive decrease. In the other hand the richness in the low urbanisation site increased, probably due to the presence of urban gardens. The diversity index did not vary significantly among...

The flower flies and the unknown diversity of Drosophilidae (Diptera): a biodiversity inventory in the Brazilian fauna Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Schmitz,Hermes José; Valente,Vera Lúcia da Silva.
Abstract Diptera is a megadiverse order, reaching its peak of diversity in Neotropics, although our knowledge of dipteran fauna from this region is grossly lacking. This applies even to the most studied families, such as Drosophilidae. Despite its prominence, most aspects of the biology of these insects are still poorly understood, especially those linked to natural communities. Field studies on drosophilids are highly biased towards fruit-breeding species. Flower-breeding drosophilids, however, are worldwide distributed, especially in tropical regions, although being mostly neglected. The present paper shows the results of a biodiversity inventory of flower-breeding drosophilids carried out in several localities in Brazil, based on samples of 125 plant...

Mycophagous Drosophilidae (Diptera) guild and their hosts in the Brazilian Amazon Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Santa-Brígida,Rosângela; Wartchow,Felipe; Medeiros,Priscila Sanjuan; Gottschalk,Marco Silva; Martins,Marlúcia Bonifácio; Carvalho,Claudio José Barros de.
Abstract The composition and potential hosts of mycophagous Drosophilidae from a section of the Brazilian Amazon forest in the Caxiuanã National forest were investigated. Sampling was performed in three different periods at long the wet season (January (beginning) and July (end) 2013 and May (middle) 2014). The samples were collected from existing trails by actively searching for fungal fruiting bodies where Drosophilidae were present. We present composition and richness analysis over two years of sampling sampling Drosophilidae and Fungi. We evaluate sampling completeness using asymptotic species richness estimators. Out of 159 fruiting body samples and 64 fungal species, 5,124 drosophilids belonging to 55 species and 5 genera were collected. The...

The drosophilid fauna (Diptera, Drosophilidae) of the transition between the Pampa and Atlantic Forest Biomes in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil: first records Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Hochmüller,Cleverton J.C.; Lopes-da-Silva,Marcelo; Valente,Vera L.S.; Schmitz,Hermes J..
Although studies on drosophilid (Diptera, Drosophilidae) assemblages have become relatively abundant in the past decades, many environments remain to be searched. The present study investigates the composition, the species abundances and the richness of the drosophilid assemblages in two localities of the municipality of Cruz Alta, northwestern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, a point of contact between the biomes Atlantic Forest and Pampa: (i) an urban area (2007), constituted by a domestic orchard with Citrus trees, and (ii) a forested area, in Centro de Educação, Pesquisa e Proteção Ambiental - CEPPA (2008/2009), of Universidade de Cruz Alta, located in a fragment of riparian forest. Breeding sites of drosophilids (Diptera) in the Brazilian Savanna. I. Fallen fruits of Emmotum nitens (Icacinaceae), Hancornia speciosa (Apocynaceae) and Anacardium humile (Anacardiaceae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Roque,Francisco; Hay,John Du Vall; Tidon,Rosana.
In this study, drosophilids that bred in fruits of three common plant species of the Brazilian Savanna were investigated: Emmotum nitens, Hancornia speciosa and Anacardium humile, along with the temporal and spatial distribution of these insects among fruits obtained from six individuals of E. nitens. Fallen fruits were collected in natural environments, placed on moist sand in individual containers and all drosophilids that emerged from these resources during 15 days were collected, counted and identified. From 3,651 fruits collected (3,435 of E. nitens, 179 of A. humile and 37 of H. speciosa) 4,541 flies emerged and were classified into 19 species of Drosophilidae. Their distribution was unequal among the three resources, also over time, and among the...

Biogeographical aspects of drosophilids (Diptera, Drosophilidae) of the Brazilian savanna Rev. Bras. entomol.
Chaves,Natália Barbi; Tidon,Rosana.
Some species of drosophilids have been intensely studied, especially in the areas of genetics and molecular biology. However, little is known about their ecology and biogeography. Here, we revise the records of Drosophilidae species in the Cerrado domain, in order to organize the available information and to recognize patterns of geographic distribution and endemism. The 43 sampled sites in this domain reveal 100 species of drosophilids (10 of them exotic to the Neotropical region), distributed in eight genera. The collections were concentrated mainly in the States of Goiás (including the Federal District) and Minas Gerais. Serra do Cipó is the site with the highest richness of these insects. Of the 90 neotropical species found in the Cerrado, 77 also...

Spatial and temporal dynamics of drosophilid larval assemblages associated to fruits Rev. Bras. entomol.
Mata,Renata Alves da; Valadão,Henrique; Tidon,Rosana.
The study of organisms and their resources is critical to further understanding population dynamics in space and time. Although drosophilids have been widely used as biological models, their relationship with breeding and feeding sites has received little attention. Here, we investigate drosophilids breeding in fruits in the Brazilian Savanna, in two contrasting vegetation types, throughout 16 months. Specifically, larval assemblages were compared between savannas and forests, as well as between rainy and dry seasons. The relationships between resource availability and drosophilid abundance and richness were also tested. The community (4,022 drosophilids of 23 species and 2,496 fruits of 57 plant taxa) varied widely in space and time. Drosophilid...

Identification key for drosophilid species (Diptera, Drosophilidae) exotic to the Neotropical Region and occurring in Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Yuzuki,Keven; Tidon,Rosana.
Abstract Thirteen species of drosophilid exotic to the Neotropical Region are recorded in Brazil, and some of them are highly invasive and threaten significantly fruit cultures. We provide an illustrated key for identifying these species, and briefly discuss their taxonomic status, distribution, and occurrence in the Neotropics. The key should not only support newcomers to the study of Drosophila but also facilitate their identification by those interested in insects associated with cultivated areas.

Phylogenetic relationships among four species of the guarani group of Drosophila (Diptera, Drosophilidae) as inferred by molecular and morphological analyses Rev. Bras. entomol.
Robe,Lizandra Jaqueline; Silva,Luciano Basso da; Loreto,Elgion Lucio da Silva.
Traditionally, the Drosophila guarani species group has been divided into two subgroups: the guarani and the guaramunu subgroups. Two, out of the four species included in this research, are members of the guarani subgroup (D. ornatifrons Duda, 1927 and D. subbadia Paterson & Mainland, 1943) and two are included in the guaramunu subgroup (D. maculifrons Duda, 1927 and D. griseolineata Duda, 1927). However, some authors have suggested that D. maculifrons and D. griseolineata are much closer to some species of the Drosophila tripunctata group than to some of the species of the guarani group. To add new data to the matter under dispute, Polyacrylamide Gel Eletrophoresis (PAGE-SDS) was used for the analysis and comparison of protein composition and...

Drosophilids (Diptera) from an Atlantic Forest Area in Santa Catarina, Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Döge,Jonas S.; Valente,Vera L. S.; Hofmann,Paulo R. P..
The present work aims at knowing the faunal composition of drosophilids in forest areas of southern Brazil. Besides, estimation of species richness for this fauna is briefly discussed. The sampling were carried out in three well-preserved areas of the Atlantic Rain Forest in the State of Santa Catarina. In this study, 136,931 specimens were captured and 96.6% of them were identified in the specific level. The observed species richness (153 species) is the largest that has been registered in faunal inventories conducted in Brazil. Sixty-three of the captured species did not fit to the available descriptions, and we believe that most of them are non-described species. The incidence-based estimators tended to give rise to the largest richness estimates while...

EFECTO DE DENSIDAD POBLACIONAL DE HUEVOS SOBRE VIABILIDAD Y TIEMPO DE DESARROLLO DE Drosophila melanogaster (DROSOPHILIDAE) Acta biol.Colomb.

Detection of P element transcripts in embryos of Drosophila melanogaster and D. willistoni Anais da ABC (AABC)
Blauth,Monica L.; Bruno,Rafaela V.; Abdelhay,Eliana; Loreto,Elgion L.S.; Valente,Vera L.S..
The P element is one of the most thoroughly studied transposable elements (TE). Its mobilization causes the hybrid dysgenesis that was first described in Drosophila melanogaster. While studies of the P element have mainly been done in D. melanogaster, it is believed that Drosophila willistoni was the original host species of this TE and that P was transposed to the D. melanogaster genome by horizontal transfer. Our study sought to compare the transcriptional behavior of the P element in embryos of D. melanogaster, which is a recent host, with embryos of two strains of D. willistoni, a species that has contained the P element for a longer time. In both species, potential transcripts of transposase, the enzyme responsible for the TE mobilization, were...

Ubiquitous overexpression of a transgene encoding the extracellular portion of the Drosophila Roughest-Irregular Chiasm C protein induces early embryonic lethality Anais da ABC (AABC)
MODA,LIVIA; MACHADO,RICARDO C.; RAMOS,RICARDO GUELERMAN P..
The cell adhesion molecule Rst-irreC is a transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin superfamily involved in several important developmental processes in Drosophila, including axonal pathfinding in the optic lobe and programmed cell death and pigment cell differentiation in the pupal retina. As an initial step towards the "in vivo'' functional analysis of this protein we have generated transgenic fly stocks carrying a truncated cDNA construct encoding only the extracellular domain of Rst-IrreC under the transcriptional control of the heat shock inducible promoter hsp70. We show that heat-shocking embryos bearing the transgene during the first 8hs of development lead to a 3-4 fold reduction in their viability compared to wild type controls. The...

"In vivo" toxicity of a truncated version of the Drosophila Rst-IrreC protein is dependent on the presence of a glutamine-rich region in its intracellular domain Anais da ABC (AABC)
MACHADO,RICARDO C.; PEREIRA,RODRIGO N.R.; COSTA,MARA S.A.; RAMOS,RICARDO GUELERMAN P..
The roughest-irregular chiasm C ( rst-irreC) gene of Drosophila melanogaster encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein containing five immunoglobulin-like domains in its extracellular portion and an intracytoplasmic tail rich in serine and threonine as well some conserved motifs suggesting signal transduction activity. In the compound eye, loss-of-function rst-irreC mutants lack the characteristic wave of programmed cell death happening in early pupa and which is essential for the elimination of the surplus interommatidial cells. Here we report an investigation on the role played by the Rst-irreC molecule in triggering programmed cell death. "In vivo" transient expression assays showed that deletion of the last 80 amino acids of the carboxyl terminus produces a...

Fatty acid composition of Drosophila photoreceptor light-sensitive microvilli Biol. Res.
Muñoz,Yorka; Fuenzalida,Karen; Bronfman,Miguel; Gatica,Arnaldo; Sepúlveda,Marcelo; Bacigalupo,Juan; Roth,Alejandro D; Delgado,Ricardo.
Phototransduction, the mechanism underlying the electrical response to light in photoreceptor cells, has been thoroughly investigated in Drosophila melanogaster, an essential model in signal transduction research. These cells present a highly specialized photosensitive membrane consisting of thousands of microvilli forming a prominent structure termed a rhabdomere. These microvilli encompass the phototransduction proteins, most of which are transmembrane and exclusively rhabdomeric. Rhabdomere membrane lipids play a crucial role in the activation of the transient receptor potential ionic channels (TRP and TRPL) responsible for initiating the photoresponse. Despite its importance, rhabdomere lipid composition has not been established. We developed a novel...

The S6 kinase Signaling Pathway In The Control of Development and Growth Biol. Res.
THOMAS,GEORGE.
The discussion will focus on the role of the ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K) signaling pathway in the regulation of cell growth and proliferation. Although 40S ribosomal protein S6 phosphorylation was first described 25 years ago (<A HREF="#20">Gressner and Wool, 1974</A>), it only recently has been implicated in the translational up-regulation of mRNAs coding for the components of protein synthetic apparatus (<A HREF="#15">Fumagalli and Thomas, 2000</A>). These mRNAs contain an oligopyrimidine tract at their 5' transcriptional start site, termed a 5'TOP, which has been shown to be essential for their regulation at the translational level (<A HREF="#32">Meyuhas et al., 1996</A>). In parallel, a great deal of...
