A Multidisciplinary Approach for Restoration Ecology of Shallow Coastal Lagoons, a Case Study in South France ArchiMer
De Wit, Rutger; Leruste, Amandine; Le Fur, Ines; Maki Sy, Mariam; Bec, Beatrice; Ouisse, Vincent; Derolez, Valerie; Rey-valette, Hélène.
By the end of the 20th century, many of the coastal lagoons along the French Mediterranean coast showed insufficient water quality and degraded ecosystem states due to anthropogenic impacts. Among these, nutrient over-enrichment, resulting in eutrophication, has been a major concern. The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) has initiated public action to improve their water quality and ecosystem state using an approach rooted in restoration ecology. Here we analyze how this has been applied for the coastal lagoons in South France, considering eutrophication as an example of ecosystem degradation and oligotrophication as the corresponding trajectory for ecological restoration of the eutrophied coastal lagoons. Oligotrophication trajectories, initiated by the...

Careful definition and illustrative case studies are fundamental work in developing a Blue Economy. As blue research expands with the world increasingly understanding its importance, policy makers and research institutions worldwide concerned with ocean and coastal regions are demanding further and improved analysis of the Blue Economy. Particularly, in terms of the management connotation, data access, monitoring, and product development, countries are making decisions according to their own needs. As a consequence of this lack of consensus, further dialogue including this cases analysis of the blue economy is even more necessary. This paper consists of four chapters: (I) Understanding the concept of Blue Economy, (II) Defining Blue economy theoretical...

La compensation au service de l’acceptabilité sociale : un état de l’art des apports empiriques et du débat scientifique. Réflexions au service du développement de l’énergie éolienne en mer ArchiMer
Kermagoret, Charlene; Levrel, Harold; Carlier, Antoine.
The Energy Transition involves governance issues which need to be overcome to ensure its success. In Europe, the policies that accompany this energy transition have fixed very short term goals such as the diversification and the development of renewable energy sources by 2020. The benefits of developing these technologies for limiting greenhouse gases emissions is widely accepted at European and national level and is frequently invoked by the State for legitimizing the current projects. However, many projects declared of public interest by the State lead to conflicts, at the territorial level, between the objective of economic development, and those of biodiversity conservation and of social interests protection. In this context, the compensation is often...

Biodiversity offsetting: Clearing up misunderstandings between conservation and economics to take further action ArchiMer
Vaissiere, Anne-charlotte; Levrel, Harold; Scemama, Pierre.
Biodiversity offsetting (BO) is increasingly adopted as a conservation tool by many countries while it has received several critics among which its possible links to several forms of Nature economicization. We believe that some of these concerns rest on misunderstandings generated by the difficulty to interpret economic principles from ecological viewpoints and the lack of a common language between conservationists and economists. Because this issue is vivid and the concepts not yet stabilized, key aspects of the potential advances and limits of BO to conservation practice must be clarified. This short communication (1) addresses the links between the BO concept and the central sustainability principle and (2) clarifies key assumptions regarding three...

Studies of the efficiency vs. the cost of long-term biological monitoring strategies are particularly infrequent and needed in large rivers. We used recent studies concerning the long-term monitoring of fish and macroinvertebrates in the Rhône River to discuss the potential and limits of monitoring strategies in large rivers and other environments. A first study is a numerical analysis of the probability to detect changes in fish abundance after flow restoration in the river. A second study concerns the detection of "most expected" relationships in annual fish time series, such as fish cohort follow-ups. It involves a comparison of the Rhône results with those obtained in smaller rivers (where sampling is easier) or in the ocean (where sampling is even...

Environmental aspects to be considered in the restoration of Araucaria Forest in the PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Britez, Ricardo Miranda de.
The Araucaria Forest is considered one of the most degraded eco-regions of Latin America. The strong landscape fragmentation has caused habitat loss, isolation of populations and, consequently, genetic impoverishment, extinction of species and loss of biodiversity. In order to improve the situation the landscape must be planned and management activities aiming biodiversity conservation be implanted. One of the strategies used is environmental restoration based on good knowledge of the natural environment, so that more adequate and economically more viable techniques can be defined. This study describes some characteristic environmental situation observed in the Araucaria Forest in the State of Parana which should be considered on applying restoration...

Restoration in the mixed Ombrophilous Forest throught the natural succession PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Reis, Ademir; Tres, Deisy Regina; Scariot, Eliziane Carla.
It is speculated on the importance of the restoration as a tool for the environmental conservation through the use of nucleation techniques capable to facilitate the sucessional process in degraded areas, involving producers, consumers and decomposers organisms. This proposal shows that the successional processinvolves all the components of the ecosystem, where it stands out the importance of the adjacents vegetationfragments of the areas to be recuperated, in way to create a larger conectivity inside of the involved landscape. It is indicated as nucleate techniques the soil transposition, artificial perches, collection of seeds of nucleate species with maintenance of the genetic variability, planting of seedlings in islands of high diversity and...

Effect of brushwood transposition on the leaf litter arthropod fauna in a cerrado area Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Vergílio,Paula Cristina Benetton; Knoll,Fátima do Rosário Naschenveng; Mariano,Daniela da Silva; Dinardi,Nágila Maiara; Ueda,Marcos Yukio; Cavassan,Osmar.
The results of ecological restoration techniques can be monitored through biological indicators of soil quality such as the leaf litter arthropod fauna. This study aimed to determine the immediate effect of brushwood transposition transferred from an area of native vegetation to a disturbed area, on the leaf litter arthropod fauna in a degraded cerrado area. The arthropod fauna of four areas was compared: a degraded area with signal grass, two experimental brushwood transposition areas, with and without castor oil plants, and an area of native cerrado. In total, 7,660 individuals belonging to 23 taxa were sampled. Acari and Collembola were the most abundant taxa in all studied areas, followed by Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, and Symphyla....

Abiotic alterations caused by forest fragmentation affect tree regeneration: a shade and drought tolerance gradient in the remnants of Coastal Maulino Forest RChHN
GUERRERO,PABLO C; BUSTAMANTE,RAMIRO O.
Plant regeneration is strongly determined by light and soil moisture differences between habitáis; both variables are modified by large-scale forest fragmentation. Several studies have indicated this alteration as the mechanism involved in tropical forest community change. The effects of fragmentation may be much more severe in Mediterranean and deciduous forests, because plant species in these forests show a stress tolerance tradeoff between shade and drought. Our study was performed in the deciduous fragmented Coastal Maulino Forest: Reserva Nacional Los Queules (RNLQ) and surrounding small fragments. We hypothesised that Aristotelia chilensis (shade intolerant but drought tolerant) should increase its regeneration in small patches as a consequence of...

Potential of the seedling community of a forest fragment for tropical forest restoration Scientia Agricola
Viani,Ricardo Augusto Gorne; Rodrigues,Ricardo Ribeiro.
Forest restoration projects are usually planted with a reduced number of species as compared to standing forests, largely due to the low availability of native species in seedling nurseries. In the present study, the potential of the native seedling community as a source of seedlings for forest restoration is analyzed. To do so, the seedling community from a forest fragment located in the southeast of Brazil was evaluated. Individuals (tree and shrub species) up to 30 cm height were measured and identified in 20 4 × 4 m plots. Altogether, 6,136 individuals (17 individuals m-2) belonging to 119 species were sampled. The seedling community showed a spatial heterogeneity with respect to the density of individuals and composition of species, and also a spatial...

Ecophysiological performance of a threatened shrub under restored and natural conditions in a harsh tropical mountaintop environment Acta Botanica
Castro,Silvana A. B.; Sá,Camila E. M.; Mourão,Fabiana A.; Duarte,Heitor M.; Fernandes,G. Wilson; Lemos-Filho,José P..
Ecophysiological responses of plants are useful for monitoring the success of ecological restoration projects that target species conservation. In this study we evaluated the ecophysiological traits of individuals of Chamaecrista semaphora from a natural population and from a site under restoration. Water potential and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters were measured both in adult and young plants of the two populations. No difference in water potential was found between sites, but individuals in the restored site had higher water potential at predawn. Adults in the natural site presented lower daily values of potential quantum yield, indicating the occurrence of photoinhibition. Individuals in the restored site also presented higher maximum relative...

Annual changes in a bird assembly on artificial perches: Implications for ecological restoration in a subtropical agroecosystem Biota Neotropica
Vogel,Huilquer Francisco; Spotswood,Erica; Campos,João Batista; Bechara,Fernando Campanhã.
Artificial perches are used in tropical forest restoration projects to increase the dispersal of seeds into restored areas. The ability of perches to enhance seed deposition depends on their ability to attract seed dispersing birds, as well as the correlation between the season of bird visits to perches and the phenology of fruit production in adjacent forests. Using data collected from a large-scale restoration project, we characterized the community of birds that utilize artificial perches over the course of one year. We hypothesized that the structure of a bird assemblage that uses artificial perches is affected by seasonal variation. We aimed to describe the richness, abundance and diversity of a bird assemblage on artificial perches in a subtropical...

Fire, logging and establishment patterns of second-growth forests in south-central Chile: implications for their management and restoration Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
González,Mauro E; Szejner,Paul; Donoso,Pablo J; Salas,Christian.
Second-growth forests represent the greatest potential resource for forest management and large-scale ecological restoration in many regions. In south-central Chile, second-growth forests include those dominated by Nothofagus obliqua, N. dombeyi, Drimys winteri, and a mixture of evergreen species, especially hardwoods. This article examines the influence of fire and logging on the establishment patterns and development of second-growth forests in south-central Chile. We characterize the size structure and composition of these four types of forests with sampling plots. The identification of the type of disturbance and its date of occurrence was determined from evidence such as fire scars and even-aged pulses of tree establishment. The size, structure and...
