Summer mortality of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas in the Bay of Marennes-Oleron (France) ArchiMer

A comprehensive research program has been developed since 1995 to focus on C. gigas abnormal mortality rates occurring regularly during the summer period in the Bay of Marennes Oleron (France). Several subprojects were carried out including in-vitro ecophysiological studies to asses l) the relationship between reproductive status, scope for growth and mortality, 2) effects of stress temperature on physiological functions. Meanwhile, field studies concerned monitoring surveys of calibrated oyster populations at various emersion time and geographic sites. A database was developed and incorporated into a geographic information system (GIS) to overlay several layers of information and establish relationship among environmental parameters and mortality rates....

L'expérience menée lors du stage fait suite à deux expériences similaires menées en 1988 et 1990. Elle vise à étudier le comportement d'une population d'huîtres (100 individus) soumise aux variations du milieu naturel. La durée de l'expérience (3 semaines) permet de tester les effets simultanés des cycles haute mer. basse mer et celui des vives·eaux. mortes-eaux. De plus. les données acquises en continu sur le milieu (fluorescence et turbidité. salinité. température) permettront le calage des modèles courantologiques et sédimentologiques. Les populations d'élevage de Ruditapes philippinarum présentent des disparités de croissance et de mortalité en fonction des secteurs océaniques ou estuariens à Marennes-Oléron. Les mortalités hivernales sont associées à des productions somatiques négatives, en particulier en zone estuarienne, où les teneurs en seston minéral sont élevées (70 mg.1-1). L'étude écophysiologique montre une baisse de la digestibilité de la nourriture parallèlement à l'augmentation de sa teneur minérale. Les productions négatives résultent d'une nourriture assimilée en quantité inférieure au seuil de rendement nul de croissance (2.J.h- 1). The maintenance of bivalve commercialisation du ring periods when sales are prohibited represents a major economic issue for shellfish-farming. To ensure their survival and to preserve the oyster Crassostrea gigas quality, their storage in land-based systems has been studied i) out of water in a cold room at 3°C with controlled humidity, enabling the bivalve sensory quality to be retained for 15 days, and ii) in recirculating systems in immersed conditions for 30 days. For the latter, the oysters were stored at 167 kg.m3 density in a tank equipped with an air-lift system, with water treated with UV and thermoregulated. The study of sexual maturation and spawning in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is part of a vast research programme that endeavours to understand the causes of mortality that occur sporadically during the spring and summer seasons in the Marennes-Oléron Bay. Thermal and diet conditioning were used to obtain oysters at each stage of maturity simultaneously. Using the measured rates of clearance, consumption, absorption and respiration provided estimates of growth potential and gave the energetic budget of oysters at different stages of sexual maturity. Physiological responses were similar for males and females. Filtration decreased from 2.4 to 2.6 l.h (-1) to 1.8 l.h (-1) with increasing maturity. Afin d'évaluer les effets d'une contamination expérimentale par des microalgues toxiques sur la filtration,· des bivalves (Pecten maximus, Crassostrea gigas et Mytilus edulis) ont été alimentés pendant quelques heures avec différents régimes : des cultures très toxiques (Alexandrium tamarense, souche japonaise), moyennement toxique (A. minutum, souche française) et non toxique (A. tamarense, souche anglaise) de dinoflagellés, et une culture non toxique témoin d'une chlorophycée : Tetraselmis suesica. The study aimed at quantifying the spatio-temporal evolution of microphytobenthic biomass in intertidal mudflats of Marennes-Oléron Bay. To reach this goal, a dynamic model has been proposed, including processes of primary production, active migration of epipelic diatoms and biomass lasses due to mortalities on one hand and resuspension in the water column during submersion on the other hand. The spatialisation is given by a hydrodynamic madel which calculates the water height everywhere. Feeding responses of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) to inclusion of different proportions of toxic dinoflagellates in their diet ArchiMer

An experimental flow-through system allowing determination of the feeding behaviour of individual molluscs was used to study oysters exposed to mixed diets composed of varying proportions of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii and two strains (toxic and nontoxic) of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium larnarense. Our results show that, when compared to a T. weissflogii unialgal diet, even a diatomltoxic dinoflagellate ratio as low in biomass as 90/10 reduced clearance rates and biodeposit production by oysters. Consumption was slightly but significantly decreased for a 50/50 diatomltoxic dinoflagellate mixture. Physiologie de la maturation et de la ponte chez l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

The physiological ecology of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas was studied using a conditioning delayed by temperature. Experiments were carried out on five batches and 2 year-classes classified into 6 maturation stages. The scope for growth concerning the stages N*5 and 6 was nearly zero while positive for early stages as well as for the post-spawning stage. Moreover, the 1 year-old oysters showed a significant lowered scope for growth (-110 J/h) compared to adult oysters (-14 J/h), therefore demonstrating the increased sensitivity of young oysters to stressful environmental conditions.
