The farming of seaweed (Euchema spp.) began in the late 80’s, stimulated by government promotion and the active involvement of international corporations in promoting small-scale production. The industry grew rapidly in the early 90’s reaching 4,000 tonnes in 1995, but has since declined, related partly to marketing difficulties. There has been significant interest in shrimp farming for several years. Tanzania has good international trade routes, suitable climate, and a long coastline well suited to brackish-water pond production. To date the main interest has been in medium to large-scale projects with significant foreign interests. Environmental assessments have been carried out in respect of at least two proposed shrimp farm developments. The procedures... |

Namibia is the last African country to have gained independence from colonial rule. It has inherited a weak, skewed, resource-based economy and an administrative and regulatory framework that reflects a colonialist approach to management and planning. A century of unsustainable practice has resulted in environmental degradation and opportunity costs. The challenges facing the current generation include democratising decision making, protecting the country's fragile ecosystems, and institutionalising an approach towards planning that promotes sustainable development. It is widely recognised that environmental assessment is a useful planning tool in promoting sustainable development. Namibia's first post-colonial government has embarked upon an ambitious... |

The Africa Environment Outlook report is the first comprehensive integrated report on the state of the environment about the continent. It provides a detailed analysis of environmental status and trends in Africa, integrated with the impacts of policies, laws and regional agreements. The report also analyses trends in human vulnerability and security due to environmental changes; and proposes alternative policy options for the future. Concrete policy actions are recommended for follow-up at national, sub-regional and regional levels. |

This research is part of an environmental monitoring of plankton and its physical and chemical response around the platform located offshore Campo Amistad, near Santa Clara Island, southeast of the Gulf in external Guayaquil. The study was carried out between july 30 and augut 31-2001, onboard the R/V Orión of the Oceanographic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy. The chlorophyll "a" biomass presented values between 0.6 and 1.52 mg/m3 in surface waters, with averages of 1.07 to 0.99 mg/m3 (10 m), 0.79 (20 m) and 0.58 (30 m) mg/m3. The larger amounts of biomass and daily variability were found in the northern part of the platform, while the opposite trend was observed in its western area. One hundred and three phytoplankton species were identified, with... |

The assessment of the impact of pollution on the marine environment depends on the possibility of prediction either by comparison or more ideally by the analysis of time series which are long enough. Obtaining data for the construction of these time series should be one of the principal goals of monitoring. Parameters which are measured should have a low variability in time and in space or low frequency. The analysis of meiobenthic communities in the North Sea and the adjacent estuaries shows that harpacticoid copepods are especially suitable as the number and the nature of the species are stable and density, biomass, and diversity are characterized by the absence of variance in the high frequencies. Nematodes, though overwhelmingly abundant, are more... |
