The IOC-IMO-UNEP/GIPME Groups of Experts on Effects of Pollution (GEEP) has been working for a number of years on promoting new ways of understanding how pollutants affect marine biological systems. A major initial focus of GEEP was on calibration workshops where different methods were tested against one another. The Oslo (1986), Bermuda (1988) and Bremerhaven (1992) workshop publications are widely regarded as benchmarks demonstrating that biological effects methods are reliable tools for measurement of the effects of pollutants discharged to the marine environment. GIS-based integration of interdisciplinary ecological data to detect land-cover changes in creek Mangroves at Gazi Bay, Kenya OceanDocs

Historic environmental, faunal, floral and socioeconomic data of Gazi Bay in coastal Kenya were collated and integrated into a GIS environment and data of impacts due to various factors were then related to remotely sensed data. Rhizophora mucronata, a valuable mangrove species, was investigated. Very low values of basal area (7.7 m2/ha and 4.9 m2/ha) and complexity indices (1.86 and 1.12) at Makongeni and Kinondo 1, respectively, reflected intense human pressure in these areas. Areas that were easily accessible or close to human settlements appeared more vulnerable. Resultados del monitoreo realizado en la playa La Puntilla, Santa Fe, La Habana, durante los años 2010 – 2011 OceanDocs

La playa La Puntilla, ubicada en el poblado habanero de Santa Fe, constituye un importante elemento recreacional de uso público, que durante décadas ha experimentado un acelerado proceso de deterioro. Con el objetivo de conocer cuál es el comportamiento actual de la misma, se llevó a cabo un monitoreo con frecuencia trimestral durante los años 2010 y 2011. En cada uno de ellos se realizó un muestreo sedimentológico, colectándose un total de 21 muestras de arena. Además se realizaron nivelaciones en tres perfiles topográficos y mediciones de la línea de costa. Se reconoce que el establecimiento y operación de un sistema de monitoreo ambiental es la médula de los esfuerzos que una nación realiza en el campo del manejo de la calidad del medio ambiente y sin él, los programas de restauración y protección de los recursos naturales, solo pueden alcanzar objetivos limitados con una efectividad relativa. This second volume of a guide to integrated coastal zone management opens a new dimension by discussing the processes involved in a more complete and dynamic way than the first, To fulfil1 this requirement, an expanded work group, drawing upon the knowledge of experts in political science, economics, and sociology, devoted over two years of effort (1999 - 2001) to its completion, following a disciplined working method. A dual principle prevailed in the application of this method. On one hand, it prescribed an approach structured as a series of steps, and on the other, it demanded that real situations be brought to light, emphasizing case studies of experience with or analysis of coastal management.

This manual sets out an approach to the identification and monitoring of shoreline change and its causative processes at local and regional scales that is appropriate to the coastal management problems of the region as reported by the regional contributors. The approach aims to promote the targeting of sparse resources on the acquisition and provision of information that is most relevant to the management of the problem. The procedures for monitoring shoreline change and its contributory processes are described, including the use of accessible relevant regional information and data or meta-data sets.

La presente tesis respondió preguntas importantes para el conocimiento del embalse de Rincón del Bonete (EdRB) y para la obtención de los puntos de referencia para la determinación de estrés ecológico en el mismo. This study investigates the impact of Undaria pinnatifida on the reef fish assemblage associated with the coastal rocky reefs of Golfo Nuevo in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Undaria pinnatifida is a laminarian kelp, indigenous to the temperate regions of Japan, China and Korea. It has spread around the world by international shipping and has also been introduced in some regions for mariculture. Its expansion into the northern Patagonian gulfs and Peninsula Valdes, a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, may threaten eco-tourism activities that depend on local biodiversity and the esthetic quality of the ecosystem. The anthropogenic affectation was evaluated on the coast N of the Gulf of Batabanó in May 2003 (corresponding to the provinces of Matanzas and Havana), in areas located in the line of the coast. The results were compared with the historical information of the sector. In the coast N and the Ensenada of the Broa, the parameters oxygen saturation, DBO5 and DQO showed characteristic high values of eutrofication. The biggest contribution in the Cianoficies was in the near coastal areas to sources of organic contamination. Water quality trends of Lake Nakuru, Kenya and its feeder streams were monitored in 2001-2004. Water samples were obtained from eleven stations in the lake and five points on inflowing streams. The items monitored were physico-chemical and biological components. The drainage basin was characterized by recurrence of dry spells throughout the period with water losses in the lake exceeding the amount received to cause a fall in water volume. The lake water salts content rose – conductivity and alkalinity reached 58 ms/cm and 5,200 mg/l respectively. PH was more or less constant (10.00 – 10.36). Se ejecutaron dos campañas de muestreo comprendidas en el período 2008-2009, en una Empresa Comercializadora de Combustible. Se realizó el muestreo de aguas residuales en el drenaje del tanque 10 (denominado Tk A) en la poceta donde tributan los tanques 9, 5 y 7 (denominado Tk B). También en la poceta donde tributan los tanques 8, 2, 3, 4 y 23 (denominado Tk C) de la Empresa Comercializadora de Combustible de Santiago de Cuba, todas ellas vierten a la Bahía de Santiago de Cuba. Se tomaron las muestras líquidas y se preservaron según método normalizado ISO 5667. The impact of agro-industrial activities on the water quality within River Nyando, Lake Victoria Basin (Kenya) was studied at different hierarchical levels between August 1997 and June 1999. Triplicate water samples were collected on a monthly basis from various stations ranging from the source to the mouth of the river and analyzed for selected physical and chemical water quality parameters using standard analytical methods.
