Preliminary assessment of the impact of erosion along the Nigerian shoreline OceanDocs
Ibe, A.C.; Antia, E.E..
Previous studies by various agencies have shown that widespread erosion is occurring on the Nigerian shoreline and in some places, the rate of shoreline retreat is so rapid as to be alarming. Shoreline stabilisation methods adopted for combating erosion along our coasts have been counter-productive and, in many cases, aggravated the problem largely because such solutions had been, and are being, carried out without consideration or understanding of fundamental principles of shoreline dynamics and processes. Following a review of case histories, the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research initiated in September, 1981 a data acquisition programme aimed at making a scientific input into long term and large scale coastal management planing in...

Socio-economic dimensions of conservation of wetlands in African dry lands: A case study of River Ewaso Ngiro basin in southern Kenya OceanDocs
Gichuki, Nathan N.; Macharia, Jane M..
Wetlands that occur in arid and semi-arid areas have unique characteristics and support unique biodiversity. The permanent wetlands are relatively small and isolated by large areas of dry land. There are however, numerous temporary or seasonal wetlands that contain water for only short period in the year. These wetlands contain water, a critical resource for all people, livestock, wildlife and plant life. The availability of fresh water minerals, pasture and other useful products attract humans, thereby making the wetlands to become focal points of economic development and indeed urbanization. The changing lifestyles of resident communities, such as increased focus on subsistence and commercial agriculture and sedentarization as opposed to nomadic...

Preliminary assessment of the cocial, economic and environmental impacts of Water Hyacinth in Lake Victoria basin and status of control OceanDocs
Mailu, A.M..
The paper presents preliminary data collected in an assessment of the social, economic and environmental impacts of water hyacinth in the Lake Victoria Basin. A summary of the status of control and strategies for the future is given. The report draws on field observations made, studies through interviews of affected communities and organisations, personal communications and published reports by scientists in the region. Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest freshwater body, supports an estimated 25 million people living in the Basin, with an estimated gross economic product of US$3–4 billion annually, mainly from subsistence agriculture and fishing in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and parts of Rwanda and Burundi. The multiple activities in the Lake Victoria...

Impacts of CGIAR Crop Improvement and Natural Resource Management Research: A Review of Evidence AgEcon
Pal, Suresh.
This paper has examined the trends in funding and impacts of CGIAR research with a focus on distribution of economic benefits and sustainability of natural resources. The evidence has clearly shown that the impacts in terms of agricultural growth, poverty reduction and environmental protection continue to be impressive. The success of varietal development programmes mainly stems from free exchange of plant genetic resources and partnerships with NARSs. However, the impact of natural resource and production system management research has been site-specific. Its spread has been restricted because of policy and institutional constraints on transfer of technology.

Australian economic development and the environment: conflict or synergy? AgEcon
Bennett, Jeffrey W.; Gillespie, Robert; Dumsday, Robert G..
The populist view of economic development and the environment is that advances in one will necessarily result in a decline in the other. Evidence in the Australian context is that the dual goals can be achieved simultaneously. As economic development progresses, the increasing levels of income stimulate greater demand for environmental improvements. The population engages in more environmentally focused consumption and calls for its governments to introduce more policies designed to rehabilitate and protect environmental assets. Concurrently, the increasing levels of wealth allow for increasing expenditure on research and development into production processes that generate greater productivity and less environmental damage. The Australian agricultural...

A HAZAI TEJTERMELŐ TEHENÉSZETEKBEN ALKALMAZOTT TARTÁS- ÉS ÜZEMELTETÉSTECHNOLÓGIÁK ÉRTÉKELÉSE AgEcon
Atkos, Istvan.
THE USE OF ECONOMIC INSTRUMENTS IN TRANSITIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES AS A TOOL FOR SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY: CASE STUDY OF MACEDONIAN PATH TO MEET GLOBALIZATION CHALLENGES AgEcon
Nedanovski, Pece.
The demand for harmonization of domestic policies across countries is seen as a precondition for globalization. Does globalization conflict with environmental protection? The relationship between two of them is too complex. From the viewpoint of its protection, the environment must be seen as a whole. In the same time, the utility function based on income and pollution, is not identical and homothetic across different countries. It appears that the diversity in environmental protection is legitimate. In order to provide a sustainable environmental policy in transitional circumstances, the R. of Macedonia needs a balance between the goals of social development, economic progress and environmental protection. So far, because of the institutional development...

The Emergence of Insect Resistance in Bt-Corn: Implication of Resistance Management Information Under Uncertainty AgEcon
Linacre, Nicholas A.; Thompson, Colin J..
The successful management of transgenic technology is likely to depend on the economic behavioral response of farmers to the regulated use of transgenic crops. A well-studied example is the widespread use of Bt-corn, in the United States, and elsewhere, to control the European Corn Borer, a major corn pest. The extensive use of Bt-corn has led to concerns about the emergence of insect resistance. The United States Environment Protection Agency addressed this potential problem by developing an insect resistance management strategy, based, in part, on complex mathematical models using detailed biological assumptions about the population genetics and life history of the European Corn Borer. However, seed companies and others have sometimes used simpler...

Multicriteria analysis on effective financing of agri-environmental measures and conflicts between environmental objectives AgEcon
Ziolkowska, Jadwiga.
The main objective of the paper is to investigate effective financing scenarios for agri-environmental measures with regard to the environmental benefit, considering regional policy priorities. By means of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a Linear Programming (LP) approach we conduct multicriteria analysis and investigate conflicts between environmental objectives as well as their influence on financing scenarios for agri-environmental measures. The analysis is based on an explorative case study conducted in Poland in the Subcarpathia region and on interviews with agricultural experts. The results show that the budget allocation for agri-environmental measures is considerably dependent on preferences given to environmental objectives within...

Environmental tax reform: experiences in Europe and possibilities in Hungary AgEcon
Sipos, Nikoletta.
Due to aggravating environmental problems and the continued high rate of unemployment, the introduction of environmental tax reform has become a pressing issue. Adjustments in existing taxes are expected to have a positive impact on the environment and on employment figures. Several European countries have put the concept into practice. Hungary needs to step up as well and take part in the prevention of global environmental problems and slow down the depletion of natural resources.

VALUING RISK TRADEOFFS AND VOLUNTARY INSECTICIDE REDUCTION AgEcon
Lohr, Luanne; Park, Timothy A.; Higley, Leon.
Farmer's willingness to voluntarily reduce insecticide use is not considered when regulatory approaches to environmental protection are proposed. Regulations that require behavior that would voluntarily be undertaken are excessive and economically inefficient. Using survey data from a contingent valuation scenario, we demonstrate the willingness of crop producers in four Midwestern states in the U.S. to trade yield losses for environmental risk reduction by eliminating an insecticide application. The mean acceptable yield loss for a sample of 1,138 producers in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio is $8.25 per acre. Acceptable yield loss increases with the rated importance of environmental goods (fish, birds, mammals, native plants and endangered species),...
