Ecosystem Services and Food Security: Economic Perspectives on Environmental Sustainability AgEcon
Richardson, Robert B..
Food security in developing countries depends in part on the sustainable use of natural resources. Food security is usually examined through three dimensions, namely the availability, access, and utilization of food. Ecosystems directly and indirectly support each of these dimensions through the provision of critical ecosystem services that facilitate agricultural production, create income- generating opportunities, and provide energy for cooking. However, in some cases, household uses of natural resources undermine particular elements of food security, hindering national poverty reduction strategies and threatening the sustainability of critical ecosystem functions. I examine the role of ecosystem services in rural food security through the lens of its...

Maize boom in the uplands of Northern Vietnam : economic importance and environmental implications AgEcon
Keil, Alwin; Saint-Macary, Camille; Zeller, Manfred.
In Vietnam, the demand for meat products has grown dramatically due to rapid economic growth and urbanisation and is expected to further increase in the future. Being the primary source of feed for the country’s livestock and poultry industry, maize has become the second most important crop after rice. While this maize boom has the potential to reduce rural poverty, it promotes the expansion of agricultural cultivation into fragile agro-ecological zones, often leading to deforestation and soil degradation, especially in the uplands. Using empirical evidence from mountainous Yen Chau district in north-western Vietnam, the objective of this paper is to investigate the current economic importance and environmental implications of maize cultivation....

Mobilising rural communities to achieve environmental sustainability using the arts AgEcon
Curtis, David.
Australia’s environment continues to worsen in several key areas. This paper suggests that the visual and performing arts may be valuable in influencing environmental behaviour positively, at the individual and community level. The arts can aid engagement and participation by a broad cross section of the community, and can provide powerful vehicles for community mobilisation, empowerment, and information transfer.

Sugarcane trash management assessed by the interaction of yield with soil properties Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Dalchiavon,Flávio Carlos; Carvalho,Morel de Passos e; Montanari,Rafael; Andreotti,Marcelo; Dal Bem,Edjair Augusto.
Currently, sugarcane plays an important global role, particularly with a view to alternative energy sources. Thus, in a sugarcane field of the mill Vale do Paraná S/A Álcool e Açúcar, Rubineia, São Paulo State, managed under two green cane harvest systems (cane trash left on and cane trash removed from the soil), Pearson and spatial correlations between the sugarcane yield (variety RB855035 in the third cut) and soil physical and chemical properties were studied to identify the property best correlated with stalk yield and the best harvest method. For this purpose, two geostatistical grids (121 sampling points on 1.30 ha) were installed on a eutrophic Red Argisol (homogeneous slope of 0.065 m m-1), in 2011, to determine the properties: stalk yield and...

Structural quality of soils cultivated with coffee and pasture in an environmental protection area Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Vico Mendes Pereira; Magalhães,Ciro Augusto de Souza; Oliveira,Geraldo César de; Lima,José Maria de.
Studies of soils in Environmental Protection Areas (EPAs) are of great importance, because they are an essential component of ecosystems, directly interfering in environmental sustainability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the structural quality of soil cultivated with coffee and used as pasture in the Capituva's River microbasin, which is located in the Environmental Protection Area in Coqueiral, south of the state of Minas Gerais. Uniaxial compression test (preconsolidation test) and soil resistance to penetration were used. Undisturbed samples were taken from the surface layer (0-5 cm) of the soils in the area: a typic dystrophic Red Latosol (LVd - Oxisol), a typic eutrophic Red Argisol (PVe - Ultisol), and a typic dystrophic Haplic...

Eggshell as a source of calcium in the production, nutrition and bromatological composition of 'Piatã' and 'Marandu' grasses AGRIAMBI
Silveira,Nágila H. da; Rabêlo,Flávio H. S.; Rezende,Adauton V. de; Rabelo,Carlos H. S.; Bianchini,Hudson C..
ABSTRACT The demand for environmentally sustainable agricultural production systems encouraged this study, which evaluated the productive aspects and nutritional status of 'Piatã' palisadegrass and productive aspects and bromatological composition of 'Marandu' palisadegrass fertilized with eggshell, replacing other sources of calcium. 'Piatã' palisadegrass was grown in the field, in a randomized block design, and 'Marandu' palisadegrass in pots, in a completely randomized design, both with eggshell doses equivalent to 0, 78, 156, 234, 312 and 390 kg ha-1 of total calcium, using four replicates. The productive aspects of 'Piatã' and 'Marandu' grasses were not significantly altered by the eggshell doses, as well as the contents and accumulations of N, P, K,...

Soil compaction on traffic lane due to soil tillage and sugarcane mechanical harvesting operations Scientia Agricola
Júnnyor,Wellingthon da Silva Guimarães; Maria,Isabella Clerici De; Araujo-Junior,Cezar Francisco; Lima,Camila Cassante de; Vitti,André César; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci.
ABSTRACT: Mechanical sugarcane harvesting increases soil compaction due to the intense traffic of agricultural machinery, reducing longevity of sugarcane crops. In order to mitigate the harmful effects caused by agricultural traffic on the soil structure in sugarcane fields, this study evaluated impacts of mechanical sugarcane harvesting on traffic lane under two soil tillage systems based on load bearing capacity models. The experiment was carried out in the region of Piracicaba, state of São Paulo, Brazil, on a Rhodic Nitisol, under conventional tillage (CT) and deep strip-tillage (DST). For CT soil tillage was applied to the entire area with a heavy disk harrow, at operating depths from 0.20 to 0.30 m followed by a leveling harrow at a depth of 0.15 m....

Effects of sugarcane juice addition on the population dynamics of Escherichia coli and the presence of Shiga-toxigenic E. coli during the anaerobic codigestion of dairy cattle manure Ciência Rural
Branco,Paula Maria Pilotto; Fernandes,Aline; Cangani,Max Ternero; Souza-Pollo,Andressa de; Lucas Júnior,Jorge de; Amaral,Luiz Augusto do.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the addition of sugarcane juice on the population dynamics of Escherichia coli and the presence of Shiga-toxigenic E. coli (STEC) during the anaerobic codigestion of dairy cattle manure. For the overall analyses at the end of a hydraulic retention time of 90 days, ten two-liter batch-type biodigesters were divided into two treatment groups: biodigester containing manure and water (MW) and the biodigester containing manure, water and sugarcane juice (MSC). For monitoring the population dynamics and presence of microorganisms, pH, and volatile acidity, tests were carried out every ten days, on 36 smaller-scale batch biodigesters made of one-liter plastic bottles (18 for each treatment). The...
