Behavior of Saanen dairy goats in an enriched environment Animal Sciences
Gomes, Karina Aurora Rodrigues; Valentim, Jean Kaique; Lemke, Sara Santana Ramos; Dallago, Gabriel Machado; Vargas, Ricardo Cruz; Paiva, Andre Luíz da Costa.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the behavior of lactating Saanen dairy goats housed with or without the use of environmental enrichment technique. Twelve animals were split into two equal groups and assign to one of two treatments: stall with or without enrichment. Five objects were used to enrich the stalls: plastic PET bottles suspended and freely on the floor (both filled with corn as a visual and auditory stimuli), general cleaning brushes fixed to the wall of the stall, suspended tire, and a tree trunk for climbing. The behavior of the goats was observed during two hours for 10 consecutive days. The behaviors were recorded using focal-animal sampling method, observing each animal during 10-minute period. Descriptive statistics were...

Feeding behavior of F1 Holstein x Zebu lactating cows fed increasing levels of banana peel Animal Sciences
Pimentel, Paulo Roberto Silveira; Rocha Júnior, Vicente Ribeiro; Melo, Marco Túlio Parrela de; Ramos, Joyce Cipriana Pacheco; Cardoso, Lucas Gabriel; Silva, Jéssica Jordane Pereira.
This study evaluated the feeding behavior of F1 Holstein x Zebu cows fed increasing levels of banana peel. Diets contained 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60% replacement of sorghum silage with banana peel. The experimental design was two 5x5 Latin squares. Cows were subjected to visual observation after adaptation of each trial period. The times spent in feeding (4.13 to 5.58 hours day-1) and in idle (10 to 12.53 hours day-1) presented quadratic effect. The time spent ruminating, number and duration of rumination periods, chews per cud, and numbers of cuds per day were not affected by treatments. The total chewing time showed a quadratic effect, with peak at 18.58% replacement. The banana peel levels did not affect consumption, rumination and chewing neutral detergent...

Patagonichnus: a new trace fossil from the Miocene of Patagonia. A probable fodinichnion of gregarious polychaetes Ameghiniana
Olivero,Eduardo B.; López Cabrera,María I..
Miocene tidal deposits from Las Grutas, Patagonia, Argentina, superbly preserve cylindrically laminated burrow systems including Asterosoma radiciforme von Otto and three compound ichnospecies of the newly proposed ichnogenus Patagonichnus ; P. calyciformis n. isp.; P. stratiformis n. isp.; and P . thalassiformis n. isp. Together with large, palmate burrows, probably produced by crustacean decapods, they are elite trace fossils. The Patagonichnus burrow systems consist of many distinctive concentrically laminated elementary components including: horizontal and vertical, conical and helicoidal bulbs and swellings; vertical shafts; straight and paired branches; and cone-in-cone structures. Hollow, branched, straight or helicoidal inner lined tubes connect...

Daily and seasonal activity patterns of free range South-American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
TOZETTI,ALEXANDRO M.; MARTINS,MARCIO.
This study aimed at describing daily and seasonal variation in the activity of a population of South-American rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) in a savanna like habitat (Cerrado) in Southeastern Brazil. Seasonal and daily activities of snakes were evaluated by the number of captures of snakes during road surveys, accidental encounters, and relocations by radio-tracking. Our results show that climatic variables such as air temperature and rainfall have little influence on the activity pattern of rattlesnakes. Our findings indicate that rattlesnakes spend most of the day resting and most of the night in ambush posture. The South-American rattlesnake is active throughout the year with a discrete peak in activity of males during the matting season. The...

The peculiar breeding biology of the Amazonian frog Allobates subfolionidificans (Aromobatidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,JESUS R.D.; KAEFER,IGOR L.; LIMA,ALBERTINA P..
ABSTRACT Allobates subfolionidificans is a vulnerable and endemic leaf-litter frog from the state of Acre, Brazilian Amazonia. We monitored a population of A. subfolionidificans through regular censuses and mark-recapture of 181 individuals during an entire breeding season to characterize its reproductive behavior. The space use of A. subfolionidificans individuals differed between sexes, with males using smaller and more segregated spaces. Males defended territories and were aggressive against same-sex individuals, which was not the case in females. The daily cycle of calling activity showed peaks in the morning and in the afternoon, and the occurrence of reproductive events was positively correlated with monthly rainfall. The breeding behavior comprised...

Attack behavior of Podisus rostralis (Heteroptera: Pentatomidade) adults on caterpillars of Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) BABT
Lemos,Walkymário Paulo; Zanuncio,José Cola; Serrão,José Eduardo.
Attack behavior of the predator Podisus rostralis (Stäl) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) adults on fourth instar Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) caterpillars was studied in laboratory conditions. Ten 24 hours old adults of this predator were observed during two hours with the following attack behavior: (1) Predator: prey finding; prey observation; touching prey with antenna; attack behavior; prey paralysis; predator retreat after attack; attack cessation; successive attacks; and (2) Prey: defense. The predator P. rostralis found its prey before attacking and it approached it with slow circular movements. The attack was usually made in the posterior part of the prey to reduce defense reaction. Larger size of prey in relation to the predator resulted...

Animal models of anxiety: an ethological perspective BJMBR
In the field of anxiety research, animal models are used as screening tools in the search for compounds with therapeutic potential and as simulations for research on mechanisms underlying emotional behaviour. However, a solely pharmacological approach to the validation of such tests has resulted in distinct problems with their applicability to systems other than those involving the benzodiazepine/GABAA receptor complex. In this context, recent developments in our understanding of mammalian defensive behaviour have not only prompted the development of new models but also attempts to refine existing ones. The present review focuses on the application of ethological techniques to one of the most widely used animal models of anxiety, the elevated plus-maze...

Ingestive behavior of steers on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Zanine,Anderson de M; Vieira,Bruno R; Ferreira,Daniele de J; Vieira,Antônio J. M; Silveira,Márcia C. T. da; Siva,Wilton L. da; Cecon,Paulo R.
An experiment was carried out to assess the performance of steers on Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon cv. Coast cross pastures by the continuous stocking method with a variable stocking rate. A completely randomized experimental design was used with two pastures representing the treatments, each containing 10 replicates. The results of t-tests demonstrated that the steers grazed for less time (7:19 h) on the B. brizantha grass pasture than the on Coast-cross grass pasture (8:13 h). There was no difference in rumination time from 6:46 and 6:89 h for the B. brizantha and Coast-cross pastures, respectively. There was a significant difference for the values regarding the time that the steers remained idle, and the animals were more frequently idle on...
