Defining and Characterizing Approaches to Farm Management AgEcon
McBride, William D.; Johnson, James D..
Exploratory factor analysis was used to identify approaches to farm management based on a list of management questions posed to a sample of U.S. cash-grain farmers. Three approaches were identified by the factor analysis: price negotiation, long-term cost control, and input adjustment. Estimated factor scores regressed against farm and operator characteristics indicate a profile of producers using each approach that is closely related to stage-of-life of the farm operator and farm business. In addition to operator age and planning horizon, operator risk preference and farm organization and location were other important determinants of the approach to management.

Examination of the value system and food preferences in the institutional catering market in light of primary research carried out in Békés county AgEcon
Fodor, Monika.
In my present paper I try to characterise the differences present at the level of food preferences by means of examining the value system as, in my opinion, differences in the value system are reflected in concrete product choices and thus also in food selection. By using factor and cluster analysis I have proven that consumer groups formed alongside the value system also differ regarding food consumption viewpoints. Furthermore, in my paper I also aim to characterise food preference as a determining factor of modes of daily eating. Based on the results, I have concluded that the impact of time-related preferences on food selection can be felt in consumers’ opinions, but cannot be regarded as dominant. In the system of food selection viewpoints, internal...

THE STRUCTURE OF FARMERS' PERCEPTIONS OF GROUND WATER POLLUTION AgEcon
Elnagheeb, Abdelmoneim H.; Jordan, Jeffrey L.; Humphrey, Vonda.
Data from a 1992 Georgia Farm Practices survey are used to examine the structure of farmers' perceptions of ground water pollution and their support of regulations to protect ground water. Estimates of the influence of farm and farmer characteristics on pollution perceptions and support for pollution control were computed using a multiple-indicator model. Results show that the willingness to change farm practices to protect ground water is positively related to how an operator perceives the seriousness of the pollution problem. Regulatory policies that negatively affect farmers' income are likely to be opposed by farmers.

The role of grazier motivations and risk attitudes in the adoption of grazing best management practices AgEcon
Greiner, Romy; Miller, Owen; Patterson, Louisa.
The onus on landholders in relation to environmental performance is ever increasing. One tool for achieving environmental improvements is the design and promotion of region-specific ‘best management practices’ (BMPs). These are conservation practices aimed at reducing diffuse source pollution from agricultural lands and thus improving end-of-catchment water quality. A suite of grazing BMPs were developed for the Burdekin Dry Tropics region in a consultative fashion but without explicit consideration of knowledge of adoption processes. It is known from the literature that farmers’ goals and risk perceptions in particular influence adoption decisions. This paper utilises the data from an earlier grazier survey to explore to what extent grazier motivations...

Perceptions of PDO Beef: The Portuguese Consumer AgEcon
Marreiros, Cristina; Ness, Mitchell.
The objectives of this paper are to examine consumers' perceptions of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) beef on the basis of a survey of consumers and buyers of beef. The paper identifies a profile of PDO beef consumers, examines their behaviour and perceptions on PDO beef, derives the dimensions of perceptions of PDO beef, and establishes segments based upon those dimensions. The results reveal that PDO consumers are representative of all geographical regions, age and profession groups, are lighter consumers of beef and shop for food mainly in the butchers. Consumers' perceptions on PDO beef emphasises quality, safety, and control. However, underlying those perceptions are six main dimensions and it is possible to identify three segments of PDO beef...

Chinese Consumers' Preferences for Livestock Products AgEcon
Peng, Xuehua; Marchant, Mary A.; Qin, Xiang Dong; Zhuang, Jun.
This research surveyed over 784 Chinese consumers in Shanghai and Nanjing in 2001 and 2002, evaluating their preferences for livestock product attributes using ordered-probit models and factor analyses. Empirical results confirm the heterogeneity of Chinese livestock retail markets and suggest that livestock distributors should focus on Chinese female consumers and young consumers considering cooking convenience as a key attribute. Chinese consumers with higher incomes placed less importance on product price and shopping environment and more importance on product quality and brand name. Highly-educated Chinese consumers placed more importance on the brand name attribute. Our findings also indicate that it is crucial for U.S. livestock exporters to create...

Does land tenure security matter for investment in soil and water conservation? Evidence from Kenya AgEcon
Kabubo-Mariara, Jane; Linderhof, Vincent; Kruseman, Gideon.
This paper investigates the impact of tenure security and other factors on investment in soil and water conservation (SWC) in Kenya. Factor analysis, step-wise regression and reduced form model approaches are used to explain the willingness, likelihood and intensity of adoption of SWC investments. The results confirm the importance of tenure security and development domain dimensions in determining the likelihood and intensity of adoption and suggest that to ensure land tenure policy is pro-SWC/environment, it is important to consider whether household plots are owned, rented out or rented in. The impact of household assets implies a poverty environment link. Similar factors affect the decision whether or not to invest in SWC and also the level of...

A munkahelyi étkezés hazai fogyasztói piacának vizsgálata AgEcon
Fodor, Monika; Gyenge, Balazs; Horvath, Agnes.
Tanulmányunkban 1000 fős országos felmérés eredményei alapján azonosítottuk a hazai munkahelyi étkezés fogyasztói szegmenseit.

Irrigation with domestic wastewater: a multivariate analysis of main soil changes Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Gloaguen,Thomas Vincent; Gonçalves,Roberta Alessandra Bruschi; Forti,Maria Cristina; Lucas,Yves; Montes,Célia Regina.
Irrigation with treated domestic sewage wastewater (TSE) is an agricultural practice to reduce water requirements of agroecossystems and the nutrient load impact on freshwaters, but adverse effects on soil chemical (salinization, sodification, etc.) and soil physical properties (alteration in soil porosity and hydraulic conductivity, etc.) have been reported. This study aimed to define some relationships among these changes in an Oxisol using multivariate analysis. Corn (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were grown for two years, irrigated with TSE. The following soil properties were determined: Ca2+; Mg2+; Na+; K+ and H + Al contents, cationic exchangeable capacity (CEC), sum of bases (SB), base saturation (V), texture (sand, silt and...

Silva,Cinthia Maria Cordeiro Atanázio Cruz; Barbosa,Ronny Sobreira; Nascimento,Clístenes Williams Araújo do; Silva,Yuri Jacques Agra Bezerra da; Silva,Ygor Jacques Agra Bezerra da.
ABSTRACT Growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors has increased the demand for rare earth elements (REEs) in the production of technological devices and fertilizers. Thus, the accumulation of these elements in the soil has become an environmental concern. Here, we aim to determine the natural contents of REEs in soils derived from different parent materials and under climatic conditions ranging from humid to semi-arid. We then evaluate the influence of major elements and soil properties on the geochemistry of REEs. The contents of REEs were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Major elements were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The mean content of REEs in soils from Rio Grande do Norte (RN),...
