Sanitation with sponge and plunger: western Atlantic slit-wormsnails (Mollusca : Caenogastropoda : Siliquariidae) ArchiMer
Bieler, R.
Siliquariid Tenagodus (synonym: Siliquaria) snails are obligatory sponge commensals, with uncoiling and laterally slitted shells embedded inside Demospongiae hosts, and shell apertures facing the outside allowing for respiratory and gill-filter-feeding activities. Live-collected animals observed in situ within hosts provide the first detailed functional morphological study of the group, and form the basis for systematic revision of the western Atlantic members of type genus Tenagodus (Siliquariidae, synonym: Tenagodidae). Three species are recognized. Overall anatomical features of wide-ranging Atlantic T. modestus (Dall, 1881) and T. squamatus (de Blainville, 1827) [ = T. anguillae Morch, 18611 are similar to those previously described for New Zealand...

Spatio-temporal differentiation in the population structure of Hydrobia ulvae on an intertidal mudflat (Marennes-Oleron Bay, France) ArchiMer
Haubois, Anne-gaelle; Guarini, Jean-marc; Richard, Pierre; Blanchard, Gerard; Sauriau, Pierre-guy.
Spatio-temporal changes in density, breeding cycle, growth and population structure of Hydrobia ulvae (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia) were studied by monthly sampling of a wide bare mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay. Four stations, located along a cross-shore transect and characterized by different geomorphological structures, were investigated from March 2000 to February 2001. Hydrobia ulvae was mainly distributed in the upper half part of the mudflat and no individuals were found in the lower part. The breeding cycle extended from March to December and showed two annual peaks, in spring and in autumn. Three cohorts were recruited during the year and showed high growth rates during summer; the parameters of the von Bertalanffy model describing the growth curves...

On altitude dependent characters in Albinaria idaea (L. Pfeiffer, 1849), with a revision of the species (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Clausiliidae) Naturalis
Engelhard, G.H.; Slik, J.W.F..
Several forms of Albinaria idaea (L. Pfeiffer, 1849) have been described as (sub)species from various sites on Mt. Ida (Central Crete). In recent years, however, much additional material has been collected, which made clear that no sharp boundaries exist between these forms. Moreover, several characters proved to be altitude dependent to a certain extent. It may be concluded that on Mt. Ida only a single evolutionary entity can be distinguished, viz. A. i. idaea. On the isolated Mt. Kedros, south-west of Mt. Ida, an undescribed allopatric form was found, which because of its smaller size and differences in altitude dependent characters was given subspecific rank as A. i. amabilis ssp. nov. On the Paximadia Isles, south of Central Crete, a percostate and a...

A Late Cretaceous gastropod homing scar (possibly ichnogenus Lacrimichnus) from southern Limburg, The Netherlands Naturalis
Jagt, J.W.M..
An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. This trace may be assignable to the ichnogenus Lacrimichnus Santos, Mayoral & Muñiz, that comprises etching scars produced by Neogene calyptraeid and/or capulid gastropods and ostreid bivalves from southern Spain and Portugal. However, it differs from both ichnospecies currently contained in that ichnogenus, L. bonarensis and L. cacelensis, in showing a relatively deep depression around the rim, irregularly distributed pit- and slit-like depressions, and an irregularly subcircular outline. Despite the wealth of available hard substrates...

The Arion Hortensis complex (Pulmonata: Arionidae): designation of types, descriptions, and destributional patterns, with special reference to the Netherlands Naturalis
Winter, A.J. de.
A lectotype of Arion hortensis Férussac, 1819 and a neotype of A. distinctus Mabille, 1868 are selected in order to assure nomenclatural stability. Descriptions of preserved specimens of these species from large parts of central and western Europe are provided, as well as of living animals from The Netherlands and Belgium. The main characters used by Davies (1977, 1979) to separate the British representatives of this complex were found suitable in the rest of Europe as well, in contrast to some characters given by De Wilde (1983). Arion owenii Davies, 1979 was not present in the material studied. Provisional UTM-distribution maps (50 km grid) of A. hortensis and A. distinctus in Europe (except the British Isles and Belgium) are provided, besides 10 km grid...

Community ecology of tropical forest snails: 30 years after Solem Naturalis
Schilthuizen, M..
Since Solem’s provocative claim in the early 1980s that land snails in tropical forests are neither abundant nor diverse, at least 30 quantitative-ecological papers on tropical land snail communities have appeared. Jointly, these papers have shown that site diversity is, in fact, high in tropical forests; often more than 100 species have been recorded per site, which is somewhat more than normally found at sites in higher latitudes. At the same time, however, point diversities (which usually range between 10 and 30 species per quadrat) appear to be no different from the ones recorded for temperate localities, which suggests that the number of ways in which syntopic resource space can be subdivided among different land snail species has an upper limit that...

Comparative reproductive anatomy in the South African giant land snails (Gastropoda: Pulmonata: Achatinidae) Naturalis
Mead, A.R..
The history and current taxonomic status of 62 nominal taxa are revised that have been associated in the literature with the subgenus Tholachatina Bequaert, 1950, of genus Archachatina Albers, 1850, and the genus Cochlitoma Férussac, 1821, in the land snail family Achatinidae Swainson, 1840. Tangible, reliable characters have been found in the detailed features of the reproductive anatomy in this family. The results of comparative anatomical study convincingly reflect phylogeny in contrast to the comparative study of only the shell characters. This latter more strongly reflects the effects of the intrinsically variable environment over time. In the present study, both sets of characters are needed to refine identification. Change, and therefore...

Bibliography of Cuban terrestrial Mollusca, including related and biohistorical papers on Cuban malacology Naturalis
Breure, A.S.H.; González Guillén, A..
This paper presents a comprehensive overview of literature on Cuban terrestrial molluscs since the 18th century. It currently cites approximately 1000 references, dealing with a) primary and secondary sources directly treating Cuban taxa or relevant for the study of the Cuban malacofauna; b) abstracts of congresses, unpublished theses, and internal reports ('grey literature'); and c) biohistorical papers dealing with the life and work of Cuban malacologists. To provide some context, we also give brief overviews of Cuban and non-Cuban authors and journals issued on the island relevant for Cuban malacology.

Costigulella primennilus spec. nov., a new minute western African terrestrial snail, with remarks on the genus Costigulella (Gastropoda Pulmonata: Streptaxidae) Naturalis
Winter, A.J. de.
Costigulella primennilus spec. nov. is the first representative of Costigulella reported from Cameroon. It is probably the smallest species of the family Streptaxidae known world-wide. Arguments are provided to consider Costigulella an independent radiation and genus, rather than a subgenus of Gulella. The mode of development of apertural barriers in juvenile shells in Costigulella and in other Streptaxidae is discussed.

Gastropod skeletal defences: land, freshwater, and sea compared Naturalis
Vermeij, Geerat J..
Predation is a primary agency of natural selection affecting the evolution of skeletal form in gastropods. The nature of antipredatory defence depends on how predators attack their prey as well as on the types and quantities of resources that are available to the potential victims. Here I review the five main methods of predation on shell-bearing gastropods (swallowing prey whole, apertural entry, drilling, shell breakage, and partial consumption) and 31 categories of shell and opercular defence that are effective at one or more of the three stages of predation (detection, pursuit, and subjugation). These categories are evaluated for marine Palaeozoic, marine Late Mesozoic to Recent, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. The five types of...

Frustrating facts about area cladistics and species individuality Naturalis
Gittenberger, E..
Area cladistics suffer from the fact that areas have various “histories”, as such dictated by different groups of taxa. Consequently, a generalized area cladogram has not or hardly any biological meaning. Conflicting area cladograms may be derived from even the same species, when their ranges in different geological periods are used. This is a consequence of the individuality of species.
