Histological Evaluation of the Effects of Borax Obtained from Various Sources in Different Rat Organs International Journal of Morphology
Kabu,Mustafa; Tosun,Murat; Elitok,Bülent; Akosman,Murat Sirri.
Boron is an essential element for life and intake via different sources into the body. Because effects of boron and compounds on the body has not been studied enough especially in tissue level, we planned this study to evaluate the effects of borax the most intaken form of boron compound on different intraabdominal organs histologically and also clinically. 42 male rats divided into equal 7 groups and different toxicological doses consistent with its LD50 dose (5000 mg/kg/d) were administered by gavage except control and sham groups. In the study, 2 different kinds of borax one of which was produced for research and the other for agriculture but the same formulation, were used and their effects were also compared. As a result it was found that borax did...

PENNA-VIDEAÚ,S.; CERMEÑO-VIVAS,J.; MORENO-MARVAL,M.; QUIROGA-NOTTI,M..
Scorpion envenoming is a public health concern in northeastern Venezuela. Specimens of the genus Tityus are responsible for most of these. In experimental animals, Tityus venom produces histopathological changes in the skeletal muscle and pancreas, but its toxicity to the reproductive system has not been studied. The aim of this work is to describe the histopathological changes in testis and epididymis of albino mice induced by the administration of Tityus n. sp. venom. Sub-lethal doses of venom (3.75 mg/g mouse) were administered intramuscularly (IM) daily for 4 days. On the fifth day, the animals were sacrificed and the testes and epididymes were quickly removed and processed for light microscopy. The venom induced alterations in spermatogenesis. Sertoli...

Chattopadhyay,P; Pandey,A; Goyary,D; Chaurasia,A; Singh,L; Veer,V.
The toxicity of deoxynivalenol, both intravenously and orally, was investigated in male and female BALB/c mice. Technetium-99m (99m Tc)-labeled deoxynivalenol was administered to mice by tail vein injection and orally dosed. Distribution of labeled deoxynivalenol at 26 hours was monitored by gamma-scintigraphy. In the evaluated organs, the accumulation of radioactive deoxynivalenol was correlated with the amount of radioactivity. In addition, the toxicity of deoxynivalenol was measured by biochemical assays followed by histopathological findings. Kidney and hepatic marker enzymes were significantly increased in intravenously administered deoxynivalenol as compared to orally treated mice. Intravenously treated mice showed severe damage in liver and kidney...

Oliveira,Karen M; Silva,Carla Maria O; Lavor,Mário Sérgio L; Rosado,Isabel R; Fukushima,Fabíola B; Assumpção,Anna Luiza FV; Neves,Saira MN; Motta,Guilherme R; Garcia,Fernanda F; Gomez,Marcus Vinícius; Melo,Marília M; Melo,Eliane G.
Background:Calcium channel blockers such as conotoxins have shown a great potential to reduce brain and spinal cord injury. MVIIC neuroprotective effects analyzed in in vitromodels of brain and spinal cord ischemia suggest a potential role of this toxin in preventing injury after spinal cord trauma. However, previous clinical studies with MVIIC demonstrated that clinical side effects might limit the usefulness of this drug and there is no research on its systemic effects. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the potential toxic effects of MVIIC on organs and to evaluate clinical and blood profiles of rats submitted to spinal cord injury and treated with this marine toxin. Rats were treated with placebo or MVIIC (at doses of 15, 30, 60 or 120...

Bonamia sp. (Protozoa, Haplosporidia) parásito de Ostrea puelchana D’Orbigny, (Mollusca, Bivalvia) en el Golfo San Matías (Patagonia Argentina): Histopatología, identificación e infección OceanDocs
Kroeck, M.A..

Host-parasite relationship during Epistylis sp. (Ciliophora: Epistylididae) infestation in farmed cichlid and pimelodid fish PAB
Pádua,Santiago Benites de; Martins,Maurício Laterça; Valladão,Gustavo Moraes Ramos; Utz,Laura; Zara,Fernando José; Ishikawa,Márcia Mayumi; Belo,Marco Antonio de Andrade.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to describe the host-Epistylis sp. relationship during infestation on farmed fish. Five Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and ten hybrid surubim catfish (Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum x P. corruscans), all diseased, were used for in vivo morphological analysis of sessile peritrichs by contrast microscopy. Fragments of infected tissues were subjected to histological processing and scanning electron microscopy. Epistylis sp. caused hemorrhagic ulcer disease, and cichlids were more prone to develop infestations throughout the body surface due to the attachment of the colonies to the scales, which did not occur with pimelodids. Multifocal granulomatous dermatitis was observed, associated with the hydropic degeneration...
