Increased leishmanicidal activity of alveolar macrophages from mature horses with mild equine asthma Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Lessa,D.A.B.; Alencar,N.X.; Torres Filho,R.A.; Costa,M.F.M.; Fernandes,W.R.; Saraiva,E.M..
ABSTRACT Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are an essential part of defense mechanisms within the lungs and their phagocytic activity is important for organ homeostasis. The phagocytic ability of AMs obtained from bronchoalveolar lavage from 17 mature mixed-breed pleasure horses (8 healthy and 9 diagnosed with mild equine asthma) was studied through assays with Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis promastigotes, which enabled the calculation of a phagocytic index (PI) and a survival index (SI). Results indicate that phagocytic activity of AMs in asthma affected horses is similar to healthy horses, while leishmanicidal activity is significantly increased in horses with asthma.

Identifying anti-Toxocara IgG antibodies in horses of Mexico Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Heredia,R.; Romero,C.; Mendoza,G.D.; Ponce,M.; Carpio,J.C..
ABSTRACT Both the presence of owned dogs and stray dogs allows the spread of Toxocara, a parasite whose eggs can be found in soil, water and food. Animals, including horses, serve as definitive and paratenic hosts. In México, where consumption of horse meat is common, Toxocara is a zoonotic parasite. The aim of this study was to identify the presence of anti-Toxocara antibodies in work horses and horses intended for human consumption by ELISA. ELISA was chosen for analysis as paratenic hosts do not shed Toxocara eggs in their feces. Blood samples were collected from a total of 188 horses, 94 of which were work horses and 94 horses from the slaughter house. Samples were analyzed by ELISA, and the general equine seroprevalence was found to be 44.6% (n =...

Diagnostic value of computed tomography, radiography and ultrasonography in metacarpophalangeal joint disorders in horses Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Machado,V.M.V.; Aguiar,A.C.S.; Viana,G.F.; Crosignani,N.O.; Puoli Filho,J.N.P..
In modern society the work and athletic performance of horses has led to a very important animal production sector in which Brazil possesses the third largest horse stock. Among all equine lesions described, metacarpophalangeal (fetlock) joint lesions are considered one of the main causes of lameness. Consequently, there is a need to improve the understanding and diagnosis of these injuries. The most efficient imaging diagnostic methods for the fetlock region are computed tomography, radiography and ultrasound. Imaging studies of the anatomical structures involving this joint are extremely important to obtain a more precise diagnose. The present study was performed in order to evaluate the capacity of different imaging diagnostic modalities to detect a...

Leptospirosis on animal reproduction: IV. Serological findings in mares from six farms in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1993-1996) Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
LILENBAUM,Walter.
From February 1993 until October 1996, 547 blood samples were collected from mares with reproductive problems in six farms of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and tested by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) with live antigens for antibodies to seven leptospira serovars. A total of 235 positive reactions (42.96%) at a minimum serum dilution of 1:100 were observed against one or more serovars, which in comparison to other studies developed in Brazil, may be considered as a high prevalence. On mares with anti-leptospiral antibodies, the predominant serovar was icterohaemorrhagiae, reactive on 102 (43.40%) samples, followed by 64 (27.23%) reactions against bratislava, and 34 (14.47%) against pomona. The high prevalence of antibodies to serovar...

Serum cortisol, lactate and creatinine concentrations in Thoroughbred fillies of different ages and states of training Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Nogueira,Guilherme de Paula; Barnabe,Renato Campanarut; Bedran-de-Castro,João César; Moreira,Alankardison Ferreira; Fernandes,Wilson Roberto; Mirandola,Regina Mieko Sakata; Howard,Denise Louise.
Exercise can be defined as "normal stress" stimulating body functions. Some reports suggest lactate as a stimulator of cortisol levels, while creatinine varies according to the amount of muscle tissue. In the present study we investigated the relationship between creatinine, serum lactate concentration and cortisol levels in training horses. Twenty-three Thoroughbred fillies were used, divided into 3 groups according to age and training protocol: G1, 1-2 years of age (N=7) on pasture, G2, 2-3 years (N=9) starting to be mounted, and G3, 3-4 years (N=7) racing at the Jockey Club. Blood samples were collected weekly during a six-month period at about 1:00 p.m. while the animals were resting. Cortisol was quantified with a commercial kit (Coat-a Count®) and...

Is the Thoroughbred race-horse under chronic stress? BJMBR
Nogueira,G.P.; Barnabe,R.C..
Thoroughbred fillies were divided into three groups according to age: group 1, 7 fillies aged 1 to 2 years (G1) starting the training program; group 2, 9 fillies aged 2 to 3 years (G2) in a full training program; group 3, 8 older fillies 3 to 4 years of age (G3) training and racing. Blood samples were collected weekly from July to December. Cortisol was quantified using a solid phase DPC kit. The intra- and interassay coefficients of variation were 12.5% and 15.65% and sensitivity was 1.9 ± 0.2 nmol/l. The semester average of cortisol levels varied between groups: G1 = 148.8 ± 6.7, G2 = 125.7 ± 5.8, G3 = 101.1 ± 5.4 nmol/l, with G3 differing statistically from the other groups. The lower cortisol levels observed in the older fillies lead us to propose that...

Fungal microbiota from ocular conjuctiva of clinically healthy horses belonging to the Military Police Cavalry of Alagoas BJM
Sousa,Maria Evódia de; Araújo,Maria Anilda dos Santos; Mota,Rinaldo Aparecido; Porto,Wagnner José Nascimento; Souza,Aryanna Kelly Pinheiro; Santos,Josimeire Lima dos; Silva,Patrícia Paes da.
Normal fungal conjunctiva microbiota of horses remains stable in healthy animals, free from ocular and/or systemic diseases which may, eventually, cause ocular alterations. The knowledge of the fungal microbiota is of great importance due to the reduced number of studies reported in the literature and also to the large occurrence of ocular alterations, mainly keratomycosis, in these animals. The aim of this study was to isolate and to identify the fungi present in the ocular conjunctiva of healthy horses belonging to the Military Police Cavalry of Alagoas. Samples from both conjunctival sacks from 50 horses were taken using a sterile swab and submitted to fungal cultures. These samples were seeded by radial spreading of the swabs on the Sabouraud agar...
