Introduction : Recently, the use of culture-independent molecular phylogenetic techniques has greatly increased our inventory of archaeal and bacterial diversity at deep-sea vents (e.g. Harmsen et al., 1997; Reysenbach et al., 2000; Takai et al., 2001) and several of the lineages appear to be endemic to deep-sea vents (Reysenbach et al., 2000b; Takai et al, 2000; Longnecker & Reysenbach, 2001). Female description of the hydrothermal vent cephalopod Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis ArchiMer

During biological sampling of hydrothermal vents on the East Pacific Rise, the manned submersible 'Nautile' caught the first female of the endemic cephalopod Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis. The specimen caught at the vent site Gromit (21 degrees 33 66'S, 114 degrees 17 98'W at 2832 m depth) is described here in detail and an amended diagnosis of the species proposed. The external morphology, measurements and internal structure resemble that Of males of this species. One of the most remarkable characters is the lack of spermathecae and the absence of apical filaments in the oocytes to provide a site for sperm storage. It is suggested that some species of the genera Benthoctopus and Bathypolypus would be the most suitable octopod ancestor of V. hydrothermalis.

Behavioural observations of the cephalopod Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis ArchiMer

Introduction : The hydrothermal vent ecosystem is inhabited by poorly known species of deep-sea octopuses (Lutz & Voight, 1994). Vulcanoctopus hydrothermalis Gonzalez & Guerra, 1998, is the only described cephalopod from a hydrothermal vent (Gonzalez et al., 1998). Little is known about this small benthic octopus, up to 35 mm mantle length, with a muscular and semi-translucent body, lack of any type of chromatic elements in the skin and eye with no trace of an iris (Gonzalez et al., 1998). Nematode communities associated with tubeworm and mussel aggregations on the East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

The meiobenthic nematode community of three different vent sites at the East Pacific Rise was studied in order to determine whether the abundance, species richness, diversity and trophic structure were similar. The sites Tica and Riftia Field were dominated by the tubeworm, Riftia pachyptila, and the Buckfield site was dominated by the mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus. The nematode communities of all three sites were low in abundance (< 1 up to 46 ind. 10 cm(-2)), except one sample from Tica with almost 1000 ind. 10 cm(-2). Spatial and temporal variations in food web structure from newly-opened habitat at hydrothermal vents ArchiMer

To highlight the spatio-temporal variability of the food web structure of hydrothermal vent fauna from newly-opened habitat, a series of Titanium Ring for Alvinellid Colonization devices (TRACs) was deployed at TICA site on the East Pacific Rise in 2006. This experiment was conducted for periods of 4 days, 13 days and one month and deployments were aligned along a gradient from the basaltic bottom to the vent openings. delta C-13 values of colonists revealed a narrower range of carbon sources in proximity to vent openings in Alvinella pompejana habitat than in Tevnia jerichonana habitat, separated by a distance of four meters. Influence of environmental conditions on early development of the hydrothermal vent polychaete Alvinella pompejana ArchiMer

Dispersal and colonisation processes at deep-sea vents are still not fully understood, essentially because early life stages of vent species remain unknown. The polychaete worm Alvinella pompejana forms colonies on chimney walls at East Pacific Rise vent sites where the temperature can frequently exceed 20 degrees C. In vitro studies in pressure vessels showed that the early embryos tolerate temperatures in a lower range (10-14 degrees C), suggesting that they would have to escape the colony to develop. Two new species of spionidae (Annelida : polychaeta) from Mid-Atlantic ridge hydrothermal vents ArchiMer

Two new species of polychaetous annelids Prionospio unilamellata sp. nov. and Laonice asaccata sp. nov. (Spionidae) are described from samples collected at Mid-Atlantic hydrothermal vent fields close to the Azores Triple Junction and in the Snake Pit vent field. These two species are important components of the communities associated with active venting. Prionospio unilamellata differs from all other Prionospio species in the form of anterior notopodial lamellae. Laonice asaccata differs from other Laonice species by lacking interparapodial pouches.

Temperature resistance studies on the deep-sea vent shrimp Mirocaris fortunata ArchiMer

The shrimp Mirocaris fortunata is a hydrothermal vent species that is found at most vent-sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This endemic species is found across a hydrothermal gradient, with thermal conditions ranging from 2-9 degrees C in ambient seawater to fairly warm values of about 25 degrees C. We performed in vivo experiments on M. fortunata specimens originating from different sites and depths (850 m to 2300 m), both at atmospheric pressure and in pressurized aquaria, to characterise the upper thermal limits of this species. Thermococcus piezophilus sp. nov., a novel hyperthermophilic and piezophilic archaeon with a broad pressure range for growth, isolated from a deepest hydrothermal vent at the Mid-Cayman Rise ArchiMer

A novel strictly anaerobic, hyperthermophilic archaeon, designated strain CDGST, was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent in the Cayman Trough at 4964 m water depth. The novel isolate is obligate anaerobe and grows chemoorganoheterotrophically with stimulation of growth by sulphur containing compounds. Its growth is optimal at 75 °C, pH 6.0 and under a pressure of 50 MPa. It possesses the broadest hydrostatic pressure range for growth that has ever been described for a microorganism. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the filtration method (in situ vs. ex situ) on the dissolved/particulate partitioning of 12 elements in hydrothermal samples collected from the Lucky Strike vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge; MAR). To do so, dissolved ( <0.45 mu m) and particulate Mg, Li, Mn, U, V, As, Ba, Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu were measured using different techniques (HR-ICP-MS, ICP-AES and CCSA). Dual symbiosis in a Bathymodiolus sp mussel from a methane seep on the gabon continental margin (southeast Atlantic): 16S rRNA phylogeny and distribution of the symbionts in gills ArchiMer

Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Particle flux in the Rainbow hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge): Dynamics, mineral and biological composition ArchiMer

In order to provide information about the export and the distribution of hydrothermal particulate material to the surrounding deep ocean, four moorings were deployed in the vicinity of the hydrothermal Rainbow vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36 degrees 14'N, 2250 m depth). The first mooring was a sediment trap with a current meter deployed at 2 m from a chimney of the Rainbow vent field and 1.5 m above the bottom (a.b.) for 16 days. A dual sensor device to estimate fluid flow velocity at diffuse hydrothermal vents ArchiMer

Numerous attempts have been made over the last thirty years to estimate fluid flow rates at hydrothermal vents, either at the exit of black smoker chimneys or within diffuse flow areas. In this study, we combine two methods to accurately estimate fluid flow velocities at diffuse flow areas. While the first method uses a hot film anemometer that performs high-frequency measurements, the second allows a relatively rapid assessment of fluid flow velocity through video imagery and provides in situ data to calibrate the sensor. Phyllochaetopterus polus, a new species of the polychaete family Chaetopteridae is described. Specimens were collected at the Ashadze-1 vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge), from 4100-4200 m depth. P polus is the first chaetopterid reported from the Atlantic hydrothermal vents. Speciation of dissolved copper within an active hydrothermal edifice on the Lucky Strike vent field (MAR, 37 degrees N) ArchiMer

The objective of this study was to deter-mine the concentrations of different fractions of dissolved copper (after filtration at 0.45 mu m) along the cold part of the hydrothermal fluid-seawater mixing zone on the Tour Eiffel edifice (MAR). Dissolved copper was analyzed by stripping chronopotentiometry (SCP) after chromatographic C-18 extraction. Levels of total dissolved copper (0.03 to 5.15 mu M) are much higher than those reported for deep-sea oceanic waters but in accordance with data previously obtained in this area.
