Spatial and temporal distribution of fish eggs and larvae in a subtropical coastal lagoon, Santa Catarina State, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Macedo-Soares,Luis C. P.; Birolo,Alesandra B.; Freire,Andrea S..
This study investigated the variation in abundance, distribution and composition of ichthyoplankton in a lagoon in southern Brazil through the year and at different stations within the lagoon. Ibiraquera Lagoon is a shallow coastal lagoon connected to the sea by a semi-permanent sandbar. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected monthly from December 2003 to December 2004, with a 200 µm mesh net using horizontal surface hauls. A colder, drier period was detected, contrasting with warm months during which salinity varied depending on rainfall and whether the sandbar was open or closed. The mean abundance of ichthyoplankton over the study period was 459.6 ± 76.2 (SE) eggs · 100 m-3 and 63.6 ± 7.9 (SE) larvae · 100 m-3, and they were present during all months....

Larval fish assemblages in nearshore waters of southeast Gulf of California: vertical and temporal patterns Neotropical Ichthyology
Amezcua,Felipe; Rodríguez-Preciado,José Alberto; Calderón-Pérez,Antonio; Rendón-Rodríguez,Sergio; Green,Lucinda; Chazarreta,Carlo Javier.
Abstract The influence of salinity and temperature on larval fish assemblages, as well as, temporal and vertical patterns on larval fish assemblages off the inlet of the Presidio River, southeast coast of the Gulf of California were evaluated. Samplings for ichthyoplankton and environmental parameter measurements were carried out at three depths, in five sampling sites, during September and December 1994, and April and June 1995. Anchovies and herrings (Clupeiformes) were the most abundant larval fish accounting for 77% of the total abundance. A significant relationship between salinity and the abundance of larval herrings (Opisthonema medirastre and O. dovii) and between the water temperature and the abundance of the weakfish (Cynoscion reticulatus) was...

Ichthyoplankton composition, distribution and abundance on the southern patagonian shelf and adjacent waters. OceanDocs
Ehrlich, M.D.; Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Machinandiarena, L.; Pájaro, M..
This paper reviews the information on pelagic and demersal fish eggs and larvae, describing the distribution and seasonality of different species and their arrangement in icthyoplankton assemblages in the Southern patagonian waters. It also reports on 11 surveys conducted by INIDEP during 1992-1995. A total of 488 ichthyoplankton samples were analyzed. Fish eggs have been recognized in 47. of all ichthyoplankton samples. They belong to three species: Coelorhynchus fasciatus, Macrourus whitsoni and Micromesistius australis. Fish larvae of 23 species and 17 families have been identified in 96. of all samples analyzed. Spawning of most species begins in autumn, and progresses through winter, when the southern blue whiting and grenadier fish contribute to...

Assessment of an environmental barrier to transport of ichthyoplankton from the southern to OceanDocs
Lett, Christophe; Veitch, Jennifer; Van der Lingen, Carl D.; Hutchings, Larry.
The Lüderitz upwelling cell and Orange River cone (LUCORC) area, a transboundary region between South Africa and Namibia, is considered to be an environmental barrier to transport of ichthyoplankton from the southern to the northern Benguela upwelling ecosystems. We use environmental data and modelling to assess the potential mechanisms responsible for this barrier: environmental data were extracted from the 1 × 1° World Ocean Atlas 2001 database and used to build maps of annual mean salinity, temperature, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentrations; outputs of a regional circulation model were used in an individual-based model to assess the transport of passive particles from the southern to the northern Benguela. The data show no clear...

Patrones de distribución espacio-temporal de los estadíos embrionarios y larvales de la anchoíta (Engraulis anchoita Hubbs & Marini) a micro y macro-escala. Su relación con la supervivencia OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P..
This dissertation is focused on the study of implications of spatial patterns on survival of eggs and larvae and subsequent recruitment of the SW Atlantic anchovy, Engraulis anchoita. The study of distribution patterns is encompassed within the conceptual framework of the analysis of reproductive strategies of marine bony fish, as adaptations that enable them to cope with and actively exploit environmental variability, regulating their abundance and avoiding extinction. The SW Atlantic anchovy, is ideally suitable for studies on reproductive biology and recruitment on a comparative basis. Its spawning and nursery grounds are located in very diverse ecosystems. This variety refers to their physico-chemical properties, carrying capacity, the influence of...

Monthly variability of zooplankton and ichthyoplankton abundance and composition were studied in 6 stations in the Gulf of Tunis between February 2003 and January 2004. Plankton trawls were horizontal, in surface and at night. Study area seems to be influenced by climatic conditions and the outflow of Majreda River that affect the surface temperature and salinity. Copepods, with many abundance peaks in the year, formed the most abundant group (84%) followed by cladocerans (8%) and chaetognaths (3%). The appendicularians, cladocerans and medusae had swarms in the summer, the creseis and the chaetognths in the autun and the zoae larvae in the spring. The highest fish spawning periods was in summer then the highest larva abundance was in winter and...
