Resistência vs susceptibilidade a piretróides em Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae): há vencedor? Neotropical Entomology
Oliveira,Eugênio E.; Guedes,Raul N.C.; Corrêa,Alberto S.; Damasceno,Bruno L.; Santos,Camila T..

Impact of cultivation systems on Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) population and damage and its chemical control on wheat Neotropical Entomology
Chocorosqui,Viviane R.; Panizzi,Antônio R..
Results of field evaluations indicated that the neotropical pentatomid Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas) is associated with wheat, Triticum aestivum L. In the no-tillage cultivation system, adults and nymphs were mostly found on the soil, near the plant stems and underneath crop residues of the preceding summer crop, usually soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, or corn, Zea mays L. Wheat grown under the conventional cultivation system showed minimal bug attack. D. melacanthus caused substantial damage to no-tillage wheat plants, particularly to seedlings. Bug attack reduces the number of seed heads of up to 34%. Seed yield was reduced in 31% due to the bugs' feeding, compared to plants free of damage. All developmental phases of the wheat plant were susceptible...

Raga,Adalton; Sato,Mário E..
Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the mortalities caused by spinosad in Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and Anastrepha fraterculus (Wied.). Spinosad formulated bait, diluted in water, was compared with baits of malathion, trichlorfon, fenthion and deltamethrin. The lethal time increased for C. capitata (medfly) adults fed in lower concentrations of spinosad. The LT50 values for C. capitata were estimated in 106, 126 and 154 min for 80, 8 and 4 ppm, respectively. No differences at LT50 were observed for different ages, 2-3d, 3-5d and 5-7d old C. capitata exposed to 80 ppm. Both fruit fly species presented similar pattern of survival when treated with spinosad at 80 ppm. In general, fenthion and trichlorfon showed LT50 values lower than spinosad for...

Crop Choice, Non-Target Pest Levels, Yield Loss and Their Effect on Insecticide Use in South Dakota AgEcon
McDonald, Tia Michelle; Keating, Ariel Ruth; Fausti, Scott W.; Li, Jing; Lundgren, Jonathan G..
Agriculturally, South Dakota is a unique state possessing the highest rate of adoption for genetically modified crop varieties. In 2009 ninety-six percent of corn acres planted in South Dakota were genetically modified compared with eighty-five percent nationally (Economic Research Service). Additionally, South Dakota has seen a dramatic increase in the number of acres treated with insecticide over the past 20 years. These two situations taken together seem to be counterintuitive. Some genetically modified varieties, such as Bt corn, are equipped with genetic defenses so that they can protect the plant from target pests. Intuitively, one would expect to see a decrease in insecticide use as adoption of genetically modified varieties increase. Recent...

ABSTRACT American bollworm (ABW), Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner), is considered as a major pest of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum, all over the globe. Due to its destructive feeding nature and continuous consumption of the same chemicals, it devolved resistant against many insecticides. Therefore, a combined application of bio- and synthetic-pesticide need to evaluate against this pest. The entomopathogenic viruses like nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV), a member of baculoviruses, can be the potential candidates for better control against ABW. The present study was conducted to assess the comparative efficacy of NPV and Spinosad 240SC (with the concentration of 250 mL · ha-1) against ABW in the controlled environment. The ABW was treated with different...

Physiological potential of Oryza sativa seeds treated with growth regulators at low temperatures Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Grohs,Mara; Marchesan,Enio; Tomazetti,Marcos Belinazzo; Roso,Rodrigo; Formentini,Tiago Constante.
ABSTRACT The rapid and uniform establishment of rice crops is important for improving production. However, this condition is influenced by several factors, including the soil temperature when planting, which may delay seed germination and compromise the final stand. The aim of this study was to evaluate the behaviour of substances which have the effect of growth regulator when applied to the seeds of different rice cultivars under low-temperature conditions. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomised design with four replications in a bi-factorial scheme, where factor A was represented by the different products (gibberellic acid - AG3, tiamethoxam - TMX, Haf Plus® - HAF, and a control with water - TEST), and factor B by the irrigated rice...

Impact of Bt sweet corn on lepidopteran pests in Midwestern Brazil Scientia Agricola
Schneider,Altair Marcos; Gontijo,Lessando Moreira; Costa,Lilian Lucia.
ABSTRACT: While the cultivation of conventional Bt corn has been widely adopted in Brazil, the production of Bt sweet corn is still incipient. The main lepidopteran pests found attacking conventional and sweet corn in Brazil are Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) and Helicoverpa zea (Boddie). Additionally, a new harmful Lepidoptera species has recently appeared in Brazil, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner). Since Bt sweet corn in Brazil is as yet cultivated on a limited scale there is no scientific information available about the performance of Bt sweet corn against lepidopterans out in the field. Thus, we conducted two field experiments to evaluate the efficacy of Bt sweet corn (event MON89034), alone and in conjunction with insecticides, against major...

ABSTRACT Cardanol is a constituent of Cashew Nut Shell Liquid that presents larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti. The isolation of cardanol is somewhat troublesome, however, in this work we describe an efficient and inexpensive method to obtain it as a pure material. The compound was used as starting material to make chemical transformation leading to saturated cardanol, epoxides and, halohydrins. These derivatives were tested for toxicity against Aedes aegypti larvae. The results showed that iodohydrins are very promising compounds for making commercial products to combat the vector mosquito larvae presenting a LC50 of 0.0023 ppm after 72 h of exposure.
