Viral entry mechanisms of herpesviruses constitute a highly complex process which implicates several viral glycoproteins and different receptors on the host cell surfaces. This initial infection stage was currently undescribed for Ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1), a herpesvirus infecting bivalves including the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. To identify OsHV-1 glyproteins implicated in the attachment of the virus to oyster cells, three viral putative membrane proteins, encoded by ORF 25, 41, and 72, were selected and polyclonal antibodies against these targets were used to explore first interactions between the virus and host cells. In addition, effects of dextran sulfate, a negative charged sulfated polysaccharide, were investigated on OsHV-1 infection.... |

The Norwegian Sea harbours several large pelagic fish stocks, which use the area for feeding during the summer. The period 1995–2006 had some of the highest biomass of pelagic fish feeding in the Norwegian Sea on record. Here we address the horizontal distribution and overlap between herring, blue whiting and mackerel in this period during the summers using a combination of acoustic, trawl and LIDAR data. A newly developed temperature atlas for the Norwegian Sea is used to present the horizontal fish distributions in relation to temperature. The centre of gravity of the herring distribution changed markedly several times during the investigated period. Blue whiting feeding habitat expanded in a northwestern direction until 2003, corresponding with an... |

A communal dormitory of male orchid bees, Euglossa melanotricha Moure, was monitored over a one-year period, when they passed the night in the fronds of a Serpocaulon triseriale (Polypodiaceae) fern. The bees used the same fronds continuously, moving to neighboring fronds as senescence set in. As many as 49 males were observed together on any one night, clinging to the midribs on the abaxial surface of up to five fern blades with their mandibles. A number of males returned to the same site to pass the night continuously over a number of months, and were observed making physical contact with one another without provoking agonistic behavior. Males of E. melanotricha appeared to prefer sleeping at sites close to nests and potential sources of odoriferous... |

This study aims to evaluate the control efficacy of greenhouse whitefly by co-application of entomopathogenic fungus Lecanicillium muscarium hybrid strain 2aF43 and greenhouse whitefly parasitoid Encarsia formosa, and to reveal the interaction between both natural enemies. Although, the emergence rate of adult greenhouse whitefly reached 93.2% in control plot, co-application plot indicated significantly lower emergence rate (4.2%). Co-application plot showed higher fungal infection compared with singularly L. muscarium inoculated plot. Parasitization rate in singularly E. formosa released plot reached 81.7% and emergence rate of parasitoid was 72.1%, but lower parasitization and emergence rate of parasitoid (13.2% and 2.0% respectively) were detected on... |

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate sulfamethoxazole sorption kinetics and isotherms using batch method. The experiment was carried out in typic eutrophic Regolithic Neosol (0-20 and 20-60 cm layers) located in the private reserve of the Riacho do Papagaio farm, in São João, PE, Brazil. The tests were carried out under laboratory conditions at 24 ºC and sulfamethoxazole concentration was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The sorption experiment through the batch method used sulfamethoxazole solutions with concentrations of 10-3, 5.10-4, 10-4, 5.10-5, 10-5 and 5.10-6 mol L-1 to obtain the analytical curve. For this soil, sulfamethoxazole sorption kinetics was best described by a second-order model and the sorption isotherms were... |

First report of interspecific facultative social parasitism in the paper wasp genus Mischocyttarus Saussure (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). Parasitism of colonies of the social wasp Mischocyttarus cerberus Ducke, 1918 by females of Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, 1949 was observed in a rural area of Dourados, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In all monitored cases, the invasion occurred in the pre-emergence colony stage, generally by a single female of M. consimilis. The period of establishment of the foreign female in the host colony was marked by antagonistic behaviors between the host female and the invasive. In general, the architecture of the parasitized nest was modified from the typical architecture of the host species nest. |

First record of necrophagy by Scybalocanthon nigriceps Harold (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae). The S. nigriceps specimen was observed making small cuts and removing portions of the carcass of a frog Haddadus binotatus (Spix) in February 24, 2011, in Serra do Japi, São Paulo State, Brazil. This note presents another record of necrophagy for Scybalocanthon. |
