Exploring First Interactions Between Ostreid Herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) and Its Host, Crassostrea gigas: Effects of Specific Antiviral Antibodies and Dextran Sulfate ArchiMer
Martenot, Claire; Faury, Nicole; Morga, Benjamin; Degremont, Lionel; Lamy, Jean-baptiste; Houssin, Maryline; Renault, Tristan.
Viral entry mechanisms of herpesviruses constitute a highly complex process which implicates several viral glycoproteins and different receptors on the host cell surfaces. This initial infection stage was currently undescribed for Ostreid herpes virus 1 (OsHV-1), a herpesvirus infecting bivalves including the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas. To identify OsHV-1 glyproteins implicated in the attachment of the virus to oyster cells, three viral putative membrane proteins, encoded by ORF 25, 41, and 72, were selected and polyclonal antibodies against these targets were used to explore first interactions between the virus and host cells. In addition, effects of dextran sulfate, a negative charged sulfated polysaccharide, were investigated on OsHV-1 infection....

Etude des interactions entre l'huître plate Ostrea edulis et le parasite Bonamia ostreae en cytométrie en flux et en hybridation soustractive suppressive (SSH) ArchiMer
Morga, Benjamin.
The French ostreiculture history highlights the fragility of its production caused by stocks overexploitation and diseases. Particularly, the flat oyster production decreased a lot after the appearance of two parasitic diseases: marteilliose and bonamiose. The bonamiose is due to a parasite Bonamia ostreae. The study of interactions between the parasite and oysters hemocytes with flow cytometry allowed to identify modifications of hemocytes activities wh en active parasite is present. On the other hand, inactive parasite does not induce modification for the same hemocyte's activities. Finally, a new study approach, subtractive and suppressive hybridization, has been undertaken in order to identify genes expressed by hemocytes and parasites during in vitro...

Horizontal distribution and overlap of planktivorous fish stocks in the Norwegian Sea during summers 1995–2006 ArchiMer
Rong Utne, Kjell; Huse, Geir; Ottersen, Geir; Holst, Jens C.; Zabavnikov, Vladimir; Jacobsen, Jan A.; Óskarsson, Guđmundur J.; Nøttestad, Leif.
The Norwegian Sea harbours several large pelagic fish stocks, which use the area for feeding during the summer. The period 1995–2006 had some of the highest biomass of pelagic fish feeding in the Norwegian Sea on record. Here we address the horizontal distribution and overlap between herring, blue whiting and mackerel in this period during the summers using a combination of acoustic, trawl and LIDAR data. A newly developed temperature atlas for the Norwegian Sea is used to present the horizontal fish distributions in relation to temperature. The centre of gravity of the herring distribution changed markedly several times during the investigated period. Blue whiting feeding habitat expanded in a northwestern direction until 2003, corresponding with an...

Long-term male aggregations of Euglossa melanotricha moure (Hymenoptera: Apidae) on fern fronds Serpocaulon triseriale (Pteridophyta: Polypodiaceae) Neotropical Entomology
Silva,MD e; Andrade-Silva,ACR; Silva,M.
A communal dormitory of male orchid bees, Euglossa melanotricha Moure, was monitored over a one-year period, when they passed the night in the fronds of a Serpocaulon triseriale (Polypodiaceae) fern. The bees used the same fronds continuously, moving to neighboring fronds as senescence set in. As many as 49 males were observed together on any one night, clinging to the midribs on the abaxial surface of up to five fern blades with their mandibles. A number of males returned to the same site to pass the night continuously over a number of months, and were observed making physical contact with one another without provoking agonistic behavior. Males of E. melanotricha appeared to prefer sleeping at sites close to nests and potential sources of odoriferous...

ANTAGONISM IS THE PREDOMINANT EFFECT OF HERBICIDE MIXTURES USED FOR IMIDAZOLINONE-RESISTANT BARNYARDGRASS (Echinochloa crus-galli) CONTROL Planta Daninha
MATZENBACHER,F. O.; KALSING,A.; DALAZEN,G.; MARKUS,C.; MEROTTO JR,A..
ABSTRACTHerbicides mixtures are used in many situations without the adequate knowledge related with the effect on major target weeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different herbicides mixtures used in irrigated rice in order to establish the adequate combinations for the prevention and management of herbicide resistance in barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Three experiments were performed at field conditions with all major post-emergent herbicides used in irrigated rice in Brazil. The first experiment was performed with barnyardgrass resistant to imidazolinone herbicides and herbicides applied at label rates. The second and third experiments were performed with barnyardgrass resistant and susceptible to imidazolinone...

Sulfamethoxazole sorption in eutrophic Regolithic Neosol AGRIAMBI
Barros,Márcia A. M. F. de; Antonino,Antônio C. D.; Schuler,Alexandre R. P.; Lima,José R. de S.; Gondim,Manuella V. S.; Lima,Valmir F. de.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate sulfamethoxazole sorption kinetics and isotherms using batch method. The experiment was carried out in typic eutrophic Regolithic Neosol (0-20 and 20-60 cm layers) located in the private reserve of the Riacho do Papagaio farm, in São João, PE, Brazil. The tests were carried out under laboratory conditions at 24 ºC and sulfamethoxazole concentration was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The sorption experiment through the batch method used sulfamethoxazole solutions with concentrations of 10-3, 5.10-4, 10-4, 5.10-5, 10-5 and 5.10-6 mol L-1 to obtain the analytical curve. For this soil, sulfamethoxazole sorption kinetics was best described by a second-order model and the sorption isotherms were...

First report of interspecific facultative social parasitism in the paper wasp genus Mischocyttarus Saussure (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Montagna,Thiago S.; Neves,Érika F.; Antonialli-Junior,William F..
First report of interspecific facultative social parasitism in the paper wasp genus Mischocyttarus Saussure (Hymenoptera, Vespidae). Parasitism of colonies of the social wasp Mischocyttarus cerberus Ducke, 1918 by females of Mischocyttarus consimilis Zikán, 1949 was observed in a rural area of Dourados, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In all monitored cases, the invasion occurred in the pre-emergence colony stage, generally by a single female of M. consimilis. The period of establishment of the foreign female in the host colony was marked by antagonistic behaviors between the host female and the invasive. In general, the architecture of the parasitized nest was modified from the typical architecture of the host species nest.

Senescent stem-galls in trees of Eremanthus erythropappus as a resource for arboreal ants Rev. Bras. entomol.
Almeida,Maria Fernanda B. de; Santos,Leonardo Rodrigues dos; Carneiro,Marco Antonio A..
Senescent stem-galls in trees of Eremanthus erythropappus as a resource for arboreal ants. Members of the dipteran families Tephritidae and Cecidomyiidae are inducers of stem-galls in Eremanthus erythropappus (DC.) MacLeish (Asteraceae), a tree common in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. When senescent, these galls become available to other organisms, such as ants. The present study describes a community of ants having benefitted from this process of ecosystem-engineering. The colonies in question inhabit the senescent stem-galls of trees of E. erythropappus and were examined in view of answering the following questions: i) whether the presence of stem-galls had any bearing on the richness, composition, or size of the ant colonies therein; and ii) whether...

The modular structure of the floral phenotype in Mimulus luteus var. luteus (Phrymaceae) RChHN
CARVALLO,GASTÓN; MEDEL,RODRIGO.
Most studies of multivariate evolution on the floral phenotype assume that traits evolve independently one from each other, ignoring the modular structure that results from genetic correlations or developmental constraints. In this paper we describe the interdependence of nine floral traits in the herb Mimulus luteus var. luteus (Phrymaceae), as an attempt to characterize functional modules on which natural selection can potentially act upon. Using edge exclusion deviance analysis, we detected four modules: (a) an attractiveness module, (b) a stigma behavior module, (c) a stigma surface module, and (d) a herkogamy module. Consequences of these findings for future studies of natural selection in this species are discussed
